It’s the middle of December 1989, and everyone is finishing up their first semester at college. They’re all returning back to Hawkins for the break, excited for a few weeks of rest, relaxation, and catching up with old friends.
Mike should be excited; he hasn’t spoken to many of his friends since he started college, the losses of the last few years still weighing heavily on his mind. But instead of excitement, his stomach is filled with dread. Dread of being back in his shitty hometown. Dread of all the memories that still haunt each corner of Hawkins.Dread of seeing Will again for the first time in months.

Carlton turns around, stops short. Blinks once.
“Oh,” he says, then laughs under his breath. “You’re… not Will.”
Mike freezes.

Post-canon, Mike Wheeler crashes at his best friend’s New York apartment for a book deal. But he wasn't ready to see this version of Will Byers: confident, successful, in love, surrounded by community and so, so free.
While Will lives the life he has always deserved, Mike grieves El and comes to the quiet, devastating realization that he might be in love a few years too late.

Summary
Mike Wheeler has spent the last four years of college wandering aimlessly through life. He'd followed Will to California, only for Will Byers, his best, most trusted friend, to slowly phase himself out of his life. And frankly, he'd seemed happier without Mike. What was he supposed to make of that?
But then, Mike discovers some things about himself. He starts to find the pieces that he was looking for. And... what is Will supposed to do with that?
(aka: a post-canon "mike finds his way back to will eventually" 90s college fic, in which will byers gets to scream at mike a lil like he deserves, and mike gets to prove himself in return)

“You’re not gonna forget me,” Mike pressed, heart pounding against his rib cage. His hands twitched, picking nervously at the cardboard. His voice wobbled. “Right?”
Will shook his head quickly, crossing the space between them in a quick jog.
“No,” he whimpered, and his arms hooked around Mike’s waist, face pressing into the crook of his shoulder. “No, Mike. I could never forget you. You won’t-?”
“No,” Mike hissed, dropping his chin down on top of Will’s head. He was starting to catch up to his height, after years of having to look up or down at each other. He tilted his head down, nose squished against Will’s hair. He squeezed his eyes shut, and Will’s arms around him tightened, hands clasped behind his back.
They’d call twice, the first month Will was gone, and then never again.
After four years without contact, Mike chances a visit to the Byers' on his way to college. It changes everything.
