He moved to swing his legs out from under the blankets, only to feel one of them get snagged on something: Ilya’s ankle was wrapped around his own, knee pressing into Shane’s thigh. When he tried to wriggle it free, his boyfriend resisted and pulled his leg in closer. A taut arm reached out and sleepily tugged Shane back down onto the mattress. He gave in easily.
“I thought you were asleep.” Shane whispered, tersely.
He felt a small stab of irritation too. Once again, Ilya had gotten in the way of his workout routine and — even though he wasn’t doing it on purpose — it was hard not to be frustrated about it. Shane needed this. The only way he had been able to soothe his racing thoughts about flunking out of the NHL next season was by reminding himself of his plan to work out early in the morning. Now, his anxiety soared, but it felt like annoyance. Why didn’t Ilya understand that he needed to stay in shape? Didn’t he see how hard Shane had to work to keep up with everyone else?
“I woke up.” Ilya’s voice was husky with sleep, “Come back to bed, moya lyubov.”

He felt a little bit insane, sitting on the cold bathroom floor locked in a civil war with himself. On one side: his rational brain; on the other, the oily, persistent whisper trying to sell him a regret he couldn’t afford. His stomach squirmed with what could either be nausea or anxiety—it all felt the same at this point.
Just do it. You’ll feel so much lighter and cleaner once it is all out of your system.
The temptation to believe that lie was a physical weight. He was exhausted from the fight. He could feel his dinner sitting like a stone in the pit of his stomach, heavy and stagnant. He knew he probably would feel better if he could get rid of it. But… fuck.

Dennis Whitaker has lived a life full of religious speculation, pain, and chronic depression/anxiety. Growing up the youngest of four in Broken Bow, Nebraska led him into early childhood trauma. In a town that could be dated back to the late 1800's, and hardly had even changed since then, there wasn’t much room for Dennis to become anything other than what his parents wanted him to be, a rancher, just like the rest of his brothers, and his father. When the opportunity to study Theology in college arises, Dennis agrees. A year into his studies, Dennis changes his major to medicine without anyone knowing. When his family receives a letter in the mail stating that Dennis changed his major, he is given two choices. Drop out and accept his godforsaken fate in Nebraska, or leave indefinitely. Choosing the latter, Dennis finds himself homeless while studying medicine. He doesn't let this deter him, and later makes it to his residency at Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center.
