“Until what?” Tecchou questioned with scepticism and a hint of worry laced in his voice.
Jouno swallowed hard and yet his mouth felt completely dry. “Until… you die.”

“I never meant for any of this to happen. I don’t want you to die,” he managed. After all his threats to kill Tecchou or telling him to die, this felt worthless. He had taken from him but never given anything. They must seem like empty words to Tecchou.
“I know,” came immediate, genuine assurance. “I know that, Jouno. I don’t blame you one bit.” His hand stilled in the middle of Jouno’s back. “You’re strong, Jouno. I know that we can do this. Together. No matter how many more loops it takes. And you can always rely on me, you got that?”
Jouno wished for Tecchou to lie to him. Selfishly, he wanted Tecchou to make this easier for him by doing that. He wanted him to lie the words he had just said. Force Jouno to find the underlying meaning in the sound of Tecchou’s heart, and discover a deep resentment for him in there. Alternatively, he wanted him to lie by telling Jouno he hated him. In a way where Tecchou deliberately chose to hurt Jouno with his words, even when he didn’t mean them. Jouno wanted Tecchou to hate him, or try to make him believe he hated him.
But Tecchou didn’t. And he meant every single one of the words he said.
“Yes…” Jouno finally mumbled.
“No, say it! Repeat what I said!” Tecchou insisted and Jouno almost groaned.
“We can do this.”
“And…?”
“I can always rely on you.”
Tecchou made a pleased noise. “It’ll all be okay.”
Maybe Tecchou couldn’t grasp the scope of the situation because he hadn’t lived through it. Usually, he wasn’t overly optimistic, although not a pessimist either. Tecchou took the information he was given and thought about it in a calm and realistic manner, at least most of the time. He had to be extremely sure about this to tell Jouno all of these things, as lying wasn’t his style. Jouno wished it was.
“Okay,” Jouno repeated quietly.
The hand on his back disappeared and Jouno wanted to grab Tecchou again, but he didn’t have to.
He froze for a moment when two arms wrapped around him and a warm body was pressed against his.
“I want you to stay right here,” Tecchou whispered into his ear.
Jouno finally put his arms around him as well, returning the hug. A foreign and new feeling. One he hadn’t experienced in so long. But it wasn’t new in a bad way.
“Cover your ears.”
Their bodies fit so perfectly against each other, it was pleasant and warm.
“No matter what, do not come after me.”
He felt Tecchou’s heartbeat right against his chest, so he tightened his arms a little more.
“Promise me that.”
Jouno was sick of making promises.
“I promise.”
Tecchou didn’t linger for much longer. Jouno wanted him to. He so desperately wanted to keep Tecchou right where he was. The thought of him dying a lonely and cold death somehow hurt even more than having him die in this room, where Jouno could be with him.
But he didn’t try to force him to stay.
Tecchou loosened their embrace and stood up. His hand wandered down Jouno’s arm that involuntarily followed him. Their last contact was their hands brushing past each other. Then it was gone, leaving Jouno cold and hollow.
“I l—” Tecchou interrupted himself with a sigh. “I’ll see you in the next loop, Jouno.” And with that, he left the room. The silence without him hurt.
Jouno laid back down on his side and pulled his knees up to his chest, covering his ears, like he had been instructed to. He pressed so hard on them that they hurt, and he could only hear his own blood flowing through them, now way too loud. He hated that sound and how it often robbed him of his sleep. It was irritating and he wanted to do nothing more than drop his hands and run after Tecchou.
He couldn’t.
Jouno clenched his jaw and bit back… tears. He wanted to scream until his lungs hurt and maybe he did. Jouno didn’t know.
An awful feeling he hadn’t experienced for years built up in his chest and he wanted nothing more than to get rid of it—
