Holt is a Forest God. He is one of many, and he guards the woods in Bennonton-- a small kingdom with magick and unmagicked people living together in taut harmony. It is almost time again to take a Bride, their month-long carnal rituals will rejuvenate him, the forest, and will please the higher Gods and Goddesses that he answers to. Able to take the form of a man, a wolf, a raven, or the forest mist itself-- he sometimes wonders which form is the "truest."
After his Bride is allowed to leave the forest, Holt continues to think about her. When the 20 year mark for another bride nears, he realizes that he only wants her and becomes determined to find her and, he hopes, make her his bride for good.
