He hadn’t expected to like the red number.
He’d told himself it was spectacle. A novelty. Something to observe with a raised brow and a polite clap. Pride, after all, had always fit him like a tailored suit. Crisp.
Controlled. Unimpressed.
Across the stage, the man in the red number was having similar thoughts, though his came wrapped in sequins and nerves. He stood there already transformed, lashes lowered, lips painted into confidence he only half felt. He’d worn the color like a dare. Like a question.
Would you look?
He had not expected to care whether the answer was yes.
But when their eyes met, something shifted. The red did not shout. It glowed. It drew the gaze down the curve of a hip, along the line of a thigh, to that bold stitched number resting like a wink against fabric.
The man in the suit swallowed.
"So this was what they meant by being weak in the knees."
