Neither of them have worried about money since his father died; Mary knows that even better than he does. She's bracing him for something bigger. He puts his fork down.
"The top prize is a yearlong residency. It's full support, which means a stipend and accommodations. When I was discussing this with the board, I realized we had room to do some real good, so…they'll be doing their residency here."

Every grown person who’s ever been to a carnival knows that there’s a certain quota of giant glorified pillows-with-eyes that they can give out each day and still turn a profit. Everyone also knows that aforementioned pillows-with-eyes could easily be purchased on Amazon at a fraction of the cost of the game. They’re cheap and they’re crap and they’re probably stuffed with asbestos and likely to fall apart within a year. But the kids don’t know that. And if it’s wrong to lie to kids, then tell that to whoever-the-fuck invented Santa Claus, or the folks that keep up the guise that there’s some deranged hoarder-fairy that steals teeth in the night. Ed doesn’t even consider it lying, because there’s an art to it. You have to be likeable, affable. You have to seem like you’re on the player’s side. Lying is just lying. What Ed does is the Art of Fuckery.

It happens almost immediately, over the pace of five seconds, but for Stede they feel like the longest five seconds in the world. He sees it all in slow motion — here Louis’ window goes down. Here the gust of wind rushes in and catches the blanket. And here the slow-mo effect ends because the blanket flies through the window in a gush so fast that Stede doesn’t even get to blink.
He catches Alma’s glance in the rearview mirror. He thinks he sees the reflection of his own horror in her eyes. It takes Louis a couple more seconds to catch up with what’s just happened.or
Louis’ safety blanket flies right through the window of the car. Luckily, Ed saves the day.
