Summary:

It happens almost immediately, over the pace of five seconds, but for Stede they feel like the longest five seconds in the world. He sees it all in slow motion — here Louis’ window goes down. Here the gust of wind rushes in and catches the blanket. And here the slow-mo effect ends because the blanket flies through the window in a gush so fast that Stede doesn’t even get to blink.
He catches Alma’s glance in the rearview mirror. He thinks he sees the reflection of his own horror in her eyes. It takes Louis a couple more seconds to catch up with what’s just happened.
