Summary
Jim has issues. He knows this. People without issues don't generally get into bar brawls just to get their head to calm down. They also aren't completely paranoid over people trying to get into their pants. Honestly...he's just getting really tired of secrets.
Could also be called: Jim might be a bit in love. He may take awhile to figure this out, though.

(Bones shows up in this one)
(Galia was stationed on the Enterprise in engineering, so she survives Nero)
Jim finally talks to his mother in person again and she lets skip that the reason Sam Kirk hasn’t responded to any of Jim’s messages is because he ran away when Jim was twelve and has been missing for ten years. Wynona didn’t ask Chris for help because she was too bitter and jealous about Chris taking Jim, and she didn’t tell Jim because she was afraid of him leaving her too. Jim spirals and starts getting in a lot of bar fights, gaining several misdemeanor charges, and eventually ending up in the shipyard bar in Riverside where Chris breaks up his latest fight. They have a similar conversation to the movie one, and Jim decides to pull his life together and focus on rebuilding his relationship with his dad and making something of himself, instead of focusing on how messed up things are with his mom and Sam. Bones is on the shuttle to San Francisco and they have their movie meet-cute.
Jim and Bones become inseparable, and Galia is their next closest friend. Jim and Chris’s relationship is still a secret from the general academy population, so there’s a lot of torrid rumors about what they are to each other. Jim and Bones are basically in each other’s pockets before they finally kiss. Fic ends on the cliffhanger of Bones stumbling upon Jim’s wing secret, but the next fic picks up immediately afterwards from Bones pov, and there’s a minimum of angst and miscommunication. -
