Work Text:
It was a crisp cold January morning as Lucifer put his pink gardening apron over his clothes. A white polo and dressy slacks. He tied off the apron and set the closed sign to open for his little flower shop Not Your Eden’s Garden for the morning pickups. Lucifer hummed a little tune to himself as he set up his stupid tech to take payments—a simple card reader no longer worked; he had to make sure everything worked with Apple—and his old school cash register was set up and ready to go.
Running from behind him alert Lucifer to Charlie barreling down the stairs that led up to their home upstairs. She had a pop tart in one hand and a water bottle in the other.
“Bye Dad!” She yelled and was out the door for the bus.
Lucifer chuckled and went to start watering.
Life was never boring with Charlie. She stayed full of life and vigor every day. Her whole philosophy was to bring a smile to one person’s face at least once a day. She always came home with a story of someone whose day she was able to brighten and sometimes she even came home with a selfie with that person. One of the walls in her room was covered in printed off pictures of the people she made smile. Charlie was a special girl, and Lucifer was so happy her light never died out.
Losing Lilith when Charlie was barely eight had felt like the end for Lucifer. He’d always be grateful to his friends and family who’re there to keep his head above water and be there for Charlie when he couldn’t find the will to get out of bed. Some days his mother would be in his tiny kitchen, her golden hair piled high on her head while she sang songs with Charlie and cooked them meals. She would stay over for days until she had to go back to work. Ozzie and Fiz would babysit every other weekend and take Charlie to fun places. Sera was the one to force him into therapy.
That one had been so hard. He didn’t want someone to push him to move on. He watched his beautiful wife fade away from cancer. He watched a vibrant singer waste away and no money on God’s green earth could save her. Sera by the end was in tears though and her words never left him.
”Charlie lost someone too!” She’d screamed in that parking garage. “Charlie asks about you every time someone else has to watch her because you wallow in your own grief. She makes you gifts and worries about you!” She bared her teeth and clenched her fists. “You are grieving and I know you hurt, but Charlie is all you have left of Lilith. Do you want her light to die too?”
They ended up bawling and holding each other. They missed the therapy session and went to the movies, bought giant buckets of popcorn, soda and tooth rotting candies. They ate and laughed at the movie. Neither could remember what they saw but that had never been the point. When the next session came, Lucifer went in with Sera holding his hand and supported him. Sera was always there for them, even now, stopping by to check in on the family of two and see how the flower shop was doing. She always bought a bouquet of fresh lavender to bring home with her and she always paid extra.
Come to think of it, she should be back in town from that business trip of hers, better get the lavender ready. Lucifer thought as he put his sprayer away and went to work on the simple arrangement.
The bell for the shop dinged overhead and Lucifer had to leave the back room to greet his potential customer.
”Good morning!” He called with a cheery smile and took in the stranger.
Tall for one, beating Lucifer in the height department but that wasn’t hard. Toffee skin with a smattering of freckles, lanky frame with broad shoulders. Black slacks neatly pressed, dark red button down ironed with a black vest. His coat was dark wool and well maintained. Chestnut curls styled perfectly with round wire framed glasses. He would have looked more intimidating if there weren’t two little sneakers on either side of his head and mop of soft black curls with big blue eyes behind similar glasses hiding behind the man’s head.
”Good morning.” The man greeted with a smile.
Lucifer met shy blue eyes before looking into maroon ones and returned the smile.
”Did you have anything in particular I can help you with?”
The other man looked around and reached up to cradle a tiny ankle in his long-gloved fingers. “I needed a bouquet of red roses and sunflowers, please.”
Lucifer gave a two-finger salute and a wink. “You got it, I’ll be right back.” He assured him and trotted into the back really quick.
The flowers were simple to put together, a little greenery and some baby’s breath to give it some filler and he was done in ten minutes. But before he brought them out, he grabbed some small daisies and made a quick flower crown. Lucifer grinned and remembered little Charlie’s giggles whenever he made these for her.
When he came back out with his parcels in hand Lucifer couldn’t contain his grin as he held out the flower crown.
”This one is on the house.” He explained and opened his MacBook to add up the charges for the flowers. “That'll be $25.50!”
The other man blinked at the daisies and his smile turned soft before he reached up and plucked the little boy from his shoulders to move him into his arms.
“Look Takuma,” he murmured gently and pulled the flowers within the boy’s reach. “This is just for you.”
Takuma took the flower crown and touched the petals of a flower. When his father tried to help him wear the crown, the little boy stiffened and covered his head.
”No hats!”
Both men paused and the boy’s father winced. “I’m sorry darling, I forgot.” He murmured and brought the boy close to hug him. “No hats, no worries.” He promised but still held out the crown. “But it’s yours and you can do whatever you like with it.”
Takuma nod was shy and jerky, but he took the crown and held it close. Blue eyes met blue and Lucifer smiled at the boy.
”Thank you.” He heard in a tiny cautious voice.
Lucifer felt like his cheeks were going to stay permanently stuck as he said. “You’re very welcome.”
The other man let out a sigh and paid with his card. Lucifer noted his name on the receipt.
”Have a great day Alastor, Takuma!”
The little boy lit up hearing his name and gave a shy little wave. “Bye bye.” He whispered as his father left with flowers and child in arms.
Lucifer watched them disappear and felt like he could have squished that cute face.
”Adorable, just like Charlie at that age.” He cooed before sighing and getting back to finish up his sister’s simple bouquet.
Just before ten o’clock Sera stepped through the front door. Smartly dressed in a pastel purple business suit and long white jacket. Her hair pulled into a stylish bun and her eyes warm as she took everything in.
”Glad to see the shop is still standing.” She teased Lucifer.
Lucifer huffed and set her lavender on the counter. “I’ve been doing this for over fifteen years, I should hope it's still standing.” He retorted with a pout, but when Sera came around for a hug he accepted her embrace.
”You look well,” Sera noted when they pulled apart and reached out to right his name tag on his apron. “I brought gifts from Marseille for you both.”
Lucifer smiled when a pink beret was placed on his head. “For me? You shouldn’t have.”
Sera chuckled and took out her phone to snap a picture. “I didn’t actually, this is for Charlie, but mother wanted a picture of you in it.”
Lucifer rolled his eyes and waited patiently for her to finish before the beret was removed from his head. “Go ahead and take it all upstairs. You can take a nap if you want, you must’ve been up for a while.”
Sera hid a yawn behind the back of her hand. “I think I might. First class is lovely, but I just can’t get comfy.” She replied.
Before she disappeared up the steps, Sera grabbed her lavender and set down cash that was well over what the flowers cost. Lucifer had long stopped arguing over this. Big sister would always be big sister. He’d just use the money to pay for lunch for the both of them.
When lunch rolled by Lucifer popped down to their favorite spot and grabbed their usual before finding his sister in his tiny guest room and waking her up.
”Sorry, lunch is a little late,” He cautioned. “It seems everyone is in the mood to buy flowers today and used their lunch break to do it.”
Sera smiled as she unwrapped her falafel sandwich. “Oh no, I got to sleep in more.” She teased and they laughed.
”I missed this place.” She murmured between bites. “No one else can make the pickled veggies right.”
Lucifer nodded while he stuffed his face. “Char-Char’s gunna be mad we had it without her.”
”I’ll stop by this weekend, and we’ll go out for lunch.” Sera reasoned and relaxed back in her chair. “Has anything new happened while I was gone the last two weeks?”
Lucifer shook his head. “Same old same old. Oh, but there were a cute kid and his Dad this morning. I made him a flower crown but apparently kiddo doesn’t like things on his head, but he liked the flowers.”
Sera smiled. “Aww, Charlie used to love those flower crowns.”
”I know!” Lucifer cooed. “She was so cute when she learned to make them and gave them out to the kids around the playground.”
Sera chuckled and suddenly changed topics. “So, I met a lovely woman at the airport this morning—“
Lucifer moaned. “Oh, please no!”
Sera pushed through still. “Her name is Melissa, she has the nicest garden, and she’s never met her soulmate.” She smiled with an eyebrow raised. “I have her number, you two could set up a date and see if anything happens!”
Lucifer stood and started throwing away their trash. “I don't know which of you is worse, Mom, Char-Char or you about my nonexistent love life!”
Sera frowned and set her cheek on her fist. “You know, Charlie will be in college in just five years. You’ll be all alone up here. Mother and I are terribly worried for you. Without Charlie around, we don’t want you to spiral.”
Lucifer leaned against his counter with arms crossed. “I’ll be fine, the shop keeps me busy and I’ll just—I’ll join a club or something, I dunno!”
Sera huffed. “Or you could try dating again and fall in love and find happiness.”
Lucifer pointed an accusatory finger in her direction. “Says the lady who hasn’t dated anyone in years!”
Sera shrugged. “I’m not interested in love that way, if I find my soulmate I’ll be happy to live a quiet life of deep friendship. But I don’t crave intimacy.” She replied and eyed him pointedly. “You on the other hand…”
Lucifer turned red in the face and hunched his shoulders. “I don’t crave anything!”
Sera sighed and stood from her seat. “I have to go, I miss my doves. Please just,” she paused and touched his shoulder. “Just consider finding someone?”
Lucifer rolled his eyes and brushed her off. “I promise to touch more hands, that’s the best you’re getting.” He groused.
Sera chuckled. “Small miracles.”
”Say hello to your pigeons for me!”
”They are doves!”
”Fancy pigeons!”
The week went by as always and when the weekend came Sera arrived with their mother in tow. Her golden hair was the same color as his own with hazel eyes. She was tall like Sera but fairer in complexion.
”Hi Starlight.” Liz greeted him and held open her arms.
Lucifer smiled and took the hug offered. “Hey Mom.” He returned and let himself be squeezed tight before Liz finally let go. “It’s been so long, not like I hadn’t seen you last weekend or anything.”
Liz smiled sweetly and in good fun with his jab. “I’ll never miss the opportunity to see my baby boy.”
Lucifer narrowed his eyes. “Michael is two minutes older Mom, we’re twins!”
Sera smirked. “She can’t really call an Airforce Commander her baby boy.” She reasoned and then gave a teasing smile. “But her flower child can take the hit.”
Lucifer scoffed in offense. “Flowers are manly!”
Sera snickered. “Yes and your cute pink apron is very manly.”
”I’m confident in my masculinity, thank you very much!”
Liz waved her hands and tried not to laugh. “Children,” she admonished. “Play nice.”
“Grandmaaaa!” Charlie squealed and wrapped herself around Liz’s waist.
”Oh, my beautiful Sunshine!” She greeted and hugged her tight. “Are you ready to get dinner my dear?”
Charlie nodded and moved to take her hand. “I wanted to tell you about school too while we walked.”
Liz smiled and gently guided her towards the storefront. “Of course, my Sunshine, tell me everything.”
Lucifer and Sera walked out behind them and Sera waited while Lucifer locked up his shop before they followed. Lucifer stuffed his hands into his slacks and side-eyed his big sister.
”You brought the big guns I see.”
Sera flicked her dark hair over her shoulder. “I don’t know what you mean.”
Lucifer’s mouth pulled down as he stared at her in disbelief. “You’re a bad liar.”
Sera turned to give him a sweet cheery smile. “I would never lie to you, baby brother.”
Lucifer bristled. “Don’t you start on that—!”
”Children!” Liz called out. “None of that now!”
Lucifer grumbled. “You’re always getting me into trouble.” he whispered.
Sera covered her mouth with the tips of her fingers. “You always start trouble, Daisy.”
Lucifer gave her a shove which only made her lean sideways but not stumble. They tittered at each other quietly until they came upon the restaurant. Lucifer trotted in front of the ladies and opened the door before he followed them in. They sat quickly from being regulars and their usual waitress set out their drinks.
”Now Lu, dear.” Liz began with that sweet caring tone that spelled disaster for Lucifer. “What’s this I hear that you turned down a date with a lovely young lady.”
Lucifer’s expression fell and he sipped at his drink, refusing to answer. Charlie gasped in shock though and Lucifer knew he was cooked.
”Daaad!” She exclaimed. “You can’t be alone all the time, what if you fall in the shop when I’m in college and break your hip? No one will know to check on you!”
Lucifer choked on his tea and started coughing. “Char-Char, I’m not that old!”
Sera had to turn away to hide her laughter. Lucifer sent her a wounded look. “Hey, you better watch yourself, if I’m old enough to fall and break a hip you’re the cripkeeper!”
Liz cleared her throat. “Charlie makes a good point, Lu,” she cautioned. “If something were to happen, Sera and I only check in once a week. You run that shop all on your own and you could hurt yourself one day.”
Lucifer sighed and crossed his arms. “Listen, I appreciate all the concern, but I promise I’m fine.” He replied sternly. “I’m happy with my life and I’m going to keep doing what I want and how I want. No more discussions on my non-existent love life.”
Wednesdays were his free days of classes and prior to taking in a four-year-old, Alastor usually got up early and had some coffee while enjoying his jazz station and reading the paper. After that he would go for a quick run to stay fit, take a quick shower and visit his Maman and spend his day with her.
Now though, he still got up early and had his coffee. But he added in a sippy cup of milk with cheesy scrambled eggs, cut up oranges and bananas on the side. The little darling was terribly picky about his proteins. His prior home life didn’t allude to any kind of preference and from the background information he read through, the boy was lucky not to be severely malnourished. The milk had added vitamins and protein powder just in case.
After making sure his little charge was settled. Alastor would have sunny side up eggs with rye toast and his coffee. He still put on his favorite station but kept it on low so he could try to engage Takuma to talk. Three months and he still just gave nods and meek little yes and no. Still, Alastor wasn’t one to give up.
”Tell me Takuma, what did you dream about last night?” Alastor prompted and ignored his paper to focus entirely on big blue eyes locked on him.
He couldn’t contain his smile, his heart squeezed at how far he’s come in just three months. Takuma looked at him instead of staring at his knees. He smiled back more and made a point of humming or swaying to the jazz that played.
Takuma blinked as he chewed his eggs and swallowed. His eyes said he was thinking over this question, which Alastor purposely phrased in a way that the sweet boy couldn’t just give a yes or no answer to. All the books the caseworker and his Maman pushed on him were a wealth of knowledge for a traumatized child.
“I saw friefies in my dweams.” Takuma whispered.
Alastor held himself back from turning giddy. “Oh?” He asked gently instead and tilted his head with a sweet smile. “What colors were the fireflies?”
Takuma stuffed two pieces of sliced banana into his mouth, bulging his cheeks before answering. “Pink an’ yewwow.”
Alastor’s grin hurt to keep contained. “How lovely, darling. Those are pretty colors.”
Takuma nodded in excitement before his attention was lost to the food on his plate. Unaware of how Alastor looked at him. As though he was the most precious creature he’d ever seen. They were never supposed to be together this long. Three days turned to weeks that turned into months. Now, all Alastor waited on was to hear back that there would be no reconciliation with Takuma’s birth father. Once the bastard was found, he would continue to be a deadbeat and keep away. Because Alastor had every intention of being a better father and parent to this boy.
After breakfast Alastor tidied up with his little helper who handed Alastor silverware and sat on the counter to help dry whatever he was offered. Alastor chuckled at his diligent little face and once they were finished, he scooped Takuma up and kissed his temple.
“Shall we go see Grammy?” Alastor prompted and bundled Takuma up in his blue puffer coat and helped him put his gloves and shoes on before he turned to grab well-worn black leather gloves for himself and his favorite coat.
Takuma held out his arms in anticipation for Alastor to pick him up again. The boy laid his head against Alastor’s shoulder and yawned sweetly as they walked out into the cold early morning. It wasn’t horribly cold today, so the walk was just fine for Alastor and his precious cargo. The older man set a brisk pace towards his destination, the flower shop. His Maman loved the flowers, and it was a lovely arrangement. Plus, Takuma kept the flower crown on his nightstand until all the petals had fallen off. His disappointment that his gift was gone made Alastor decide that a bouquet of flowers and a special something for Takuma was a perfect way to add to their routine.
Takuma even perked up when he figured out where they were headed. Alastor smirked as they rounded the corner and the Eden’s Garden came into view. There was no one else out except for the early birds for the bakery and breakfast shops. Takuma’s blue eyes grew big behind his wireframes and Alastor grinned as he opened the shop door.
The jingle of the bell had the blonde from before coming out from the back and his own blue eyes lit up in recognition.
“Hey strangers!” He greeted them with cheer.
Takuma let go of Alastor’s shirt, leaving the spot wrinkled, and offered the blonde a shy wave. “Hi.” He whispered before returning his hand to the wrinkled spot and curling close.
The blonde’s smile turned radiant. “Hi little buddy,” he cooed at Takuma. “My name’s Lucifer, can you remind me of yours?”
But Takuma was at his limit for being brave and buried his face in Alastor’s chest.
Lucifer's smile stayed in place. “I think I remember it starting with a T?”
Takuma wouldn't be persuaded though, once his courage dried up he was done. Alastor rubbed at his back and looked to Lucifer.
”Good morning,“ He greeted the other in return and offered proper introductions. “This is Takuma and I’m Alastor.”
”Nice to meet you both!” Lucifer replied and went down to business. “What can I get for you this morning?”
”Roses and sunflowers, please. And a flower crown as well.”
Takuma peaked up at Alastor with eyes lit up in excitement and when Lucifer came back with not daisies, but blue flowers made of multiple petals. Takuma gasped and was so gentle as he took the crown and pet at the perfectly round flowers.
”These are called chrysanthemums, if you want these to last longer, just put them in a plastic bag with damp paper towels in the fridge as much as possible.” Lucifer explained and rang up the bouquet.
Alastor made a corrective sound in the back of his throat. “I’ll pay for the crown this time as well.”
Lucifer blinked. “It’s no trouble, I used to make these for my daughter all the time.”
Alastor shook his head though. “I insist,” he pressed. “We’ll be coming by every Wednesday to grab the bouquet for my mother, I’ll be picking up the crown as well for Takuma.”
Lucifer shrugged and added an extra charge. “That brings you up to $30.75, sound good Al?”
Alastor raised his sharp brow and swiped his card. “It’s Alastor and that should be fine.”
Takuma tapped at his shoulder and Alastor turned his full attention to his boy. “Yes darling?”
Little hands reached up and placed the crown on his head. “Pwetty!”
Alastor blinked in surprise but had to chuckle and nuzzle his temple. “You think so? I still think they would look better on you, darling.”
They left after a quick goodbye and made their way back to their apartment. Alastor turned instead from the stairs to his car, opening the door and strapping Takuma into his car seat before getting in and taking them to his Maman’s.
The drive was filled with children’s music and trying to engage Takuma in the songs. Mostly he was giggled at and clapped whenever he sang along to try and encourage Takuma to join in. By the time they were at his mother’s modest but well-kept house, Alastor called it a win that Takuma swayed along to the songs and asked for ‘more singing’. Alastor needn’t knock as he slipped the key into the lock and walked in with his precious bundle. They put their warmer clothes in the coat closet before Takuma darted away and disappeared towards the kitchen.
Alastor followed behind and pulled out his phone to snap a quick picture of his two favorite people hugging each other tight. Caroline stood and both looked over to smile at Alastor.
”Well hello there stranger!” Caroline greeted her son and moved Takuma to her hip while she walked back to the counter. “Ya know, you could go an’ take my baby somewhere new, like the park or the playground.”
Alastor came up behind them and kissed her head. “Takuma needs routine. You watch him while I’m at work and he’s used to being here.”
”Hmm, I seem to recall you comin’ over here every day before Takuma joined our family.” She teased with no real bite and grabbed a pre-sliced apple and handed it to Takuma. “Maybe you could take this time to meet and find your soulmate.”
Alastor waved her off as he took off his gloves. “I’m not interested.” He reminded her and took his boy back while grabbing the plate of snacks cut up for him.
”Takuma needs a mother figure— “
”Takuma has you as a motherly figure.”
”I’m his Grammy, Alastor,” Caroline huffed. “An’ it don’t gotta be a motherly figure. Raisin’ a child on yer own is tough. Havin’ someone to be a support is important.”
Alastor rolled his eyes while he sat beside his boy and handed him pieces of cut-up fruit and veggies. “You did just fine without that deadbeat. Takuma and I will do just as well.” He assured his mother and smiled when Takuma perked up in adorable confusion at how many times his name was said.
Caroline sighed from behind and came over to set a bigger tray of snacks to tide them over until lunch. “Just because my experience with a soulmate didn’t work out, doesn’t mean that’s gunna be your experience too.”
Alastor made sure Takuma was focused on his food before he turned sharp eyes on his Maman. “Maman, I appreciate your concern, but I’m fine.” He replied sternly. “I’m happy with my life and what I’ve built. I have you, Takuma and my career. No more discussions on my non-existent love life.”
Caroline pouted and crossed her arms. “If’n it were a woman, I’d get more beautiful grandbabies.”
Alastor rolled his eyes and reached over to run his fingers through black curls. “Who needs quantity when you have quality?” He joked and shared a smile with his little boy.
”Uh huh, is there a reason yer wearing a flower crown?”
His new regulars were becoming a favorite part of his Wednesdays. Takuma was slowly coming around to saying more than just hi or bye and giving shy murmurs of thank yous and pleases. His dad always watched fondly before giving Lucifer a short greeting, paying and leaving just as quickly as he arrived. Always roses and sunflowers.
Lucifer casually asked while bringing out the premade bouquet one day. “Does your mom just only love roses and sunflowers?”
Alastor shrugged as he swiped his card and leaned forward for Takuma to take the crown made of spray roses in pink. “She has a rose garden and sunflowers surrounding her home. Obviously they don’t blossom in the cold, and I imagine these brighten her day when she can look at them instead of her dead garden.”
Lucifer hummed and nodded along. “Not dead, just sleeping.” He corrected him with an inside joke between his friends and himself.
Alastor rolled his eyes and Lucifer found it cute the way his nose upturned for Lucifer, but his whole expression immediately softened when Takuma showed him his roses.
”Yes darling, they’re beautiful.” He murmured sweetly.
“Does Takuma’s mom work on Wednesdays?”
Alastor very deliberately moved Takuma, so his back was to Lucifer before he turned a furious glare at Lucifer. “She’s not in the picture thank God and it would be in everyone’s best interests if you didn’t bring that bi— “He cleared his throat and took a deep breath. “I don’t have a wife or husband, I don’t subscribe to the notion of soulmates. Takuma is adopted and his egg and sperm donor are not in the picture and never will be.”
Lucifer winced at his faux pa and held up his hands in a sign of peace. “Hey whoa, sorry Al! I kinda get it, I’m raising my daughter on my own. My wife passed from cancer when she was eight.”
Alastor took another deep breath and kissed soft curls. “I’m sorry for your loss,” he said as anyone with manners would. “Just please, don’t ever ask him about that woman. I’ve been working hard to fix the damage she’s done to my baby.”
Lucifer softened and found his heart melting. “I just want to say then, you’re doing a great job.”
Alastor looked further mollified and offered a tart upturn of his lips. “Thank you. We’ll see you next week, then.”
As Alastor turned and went for the door, both men paused in surprise when Takuma eked out. “Bye Wucifer.”
The man in question grinned and waved at his little friend. “Bye TK, have a good day buddy!”
Lucifer watched through the window as Alastor pulled Takuma to see his face and bump their foreheads together, obviously praising the boy for being brave. Lucifer watched with a dopey smile and couldn’t help but think how adorable they were. If it weren’t for the knowledge that they weren’t blood, Lucifer would never have known Takuma wasn’t Alastor’s biological son. Sure, Takuma may have lighter skin than Alastor, but he was darker than Lucifer—not that difficult he’ll admit. Blue eyes were a recessive gene, and anyone could have that nowadays. Takuma shared Alastor’s sharper features in his cheeks and chin despite the baby face hiding them and his curls were reminiscent of Alastor’s own.
Lucifer hoped his mistake didn’t hurt the boy or his dad from coming in for flowers. He liked seeing the pair and Takuma brightened his day. An idea came to mind and when his sister came around he was busy on his phone ordering healthy treats and little sparkly things to add to the crowns.
”That’s unprofessional,” Sera admonished as she came around to lean up against him to peek over his head. “What if a customer came in?”
”They’ll think I hired a poor worker and make a complaint on the website and I’ll delete it.” Lucifer replied and tapped at a box of apple sauce packets. “Do kids still like apple sauce?”
”I’m really not the person to ask.” Sera said and then added a question. “Is this for Charlie? You could just wait and ask her?”
”Nah, this is for a new regular’s little boy. He’s really young, maybe three? He’s super shy and I wanted to have some treats when they come back on Wednesdays.” Lucifer explained and added goldfish to the cart.
”Again, you could have gone and got this later.” Sera teased him.
”He said my name for the first time today,” Lucifer gushed. “I can’t wait to see his face light up when I have snacks and little fairy lights added to his flower crowns!”
Sera hummed and propped her chin up on Lucifer’s head. “Will his parents be alright with all that?”
”Just a dad and I think he spoils TK, so he probably won’t have a problem with some healthier snacks.” Lucifer answered and ordered a dozen different things for one kid.
Sera, meanwhile, smelled blood in the water. “Oh?” She inquired innocently enough. “A single father whose child you’re already attached to?”
Lucifer didn’t catch her tone. “How can I not be attached? He’s got big blue eyes just like Char-Char but has this big mop of black curls. Al must keep up with them ‘cause they always look soft. He’s so cute when he cuddles up to his dad.”
Sera hummed and tried another angle. “Does his father also have dazzling blue eyes?
Lucifer shook his head, almost dislodging Sera as he impatiently tapped on the order screen and double checked when it would send out. “Al has brown curls and these almost maroon eyes. He’s got this gothic aesthetic too. Black and red at all times. But he dresses TK in softer tones like purple and blues. They’re adorable.”
”A grown man can’t be adorable.” Sera prodded gently.
Lucifer chuckled. “He’s very handsome. Sharp jaw and I bet his cheek bones could cut diamonds. Really tall too and he’s got a nice smile.”
Sera grinned and moved back to grab Lucifer and spin him around. “Have you shook bare hands with this Al?”
Lucifer blinked in surprise at being spun and frowned at his sister. “No, it's cold out and he’s wearing gloves.”
Sera frowned and shook her brother in frustration. “Lu! You promised to at least try!”
”I said to leave my non-existent love life alone!” Lucifer corrected and crossed his arms.
”You think he’s handsome.” Sera insisted. “You haven’t thought another adult has been remotely attractive since you started to heal. Now a man with a cute child has you buying things for said child and practically writing poetry about the cut of his jawline.”
Lucifer’s pale face turned bright red. “NUH UH!”
Sera giggled and poked his nose. “You said you could cut diamonds with them.” She sang and fluttered away.
”Ugh! Shut up!”
Just then the bell dinged and a random customer walked in. Both siblings quieted down and Sera went into the back to wait until Lucifer finished up. When his blonde head popped in with a pout, she gave a cheeky grin.
”When does this Al pop in with his son?”
Lucifer frowned and went to put her lavender together. “Early mornings on Wednesdays. They’re usually my first customers unless I have a wedding order pickup.”
Sera hummed and tapped her chin. “I think I’d like to see this handsome man of yours.”
Lucifer sputtered and threw the bouquet at her. “No!”
”Maybe I’ll harp on and on about my successful business owner of a brother,” she cooed and held her bouquet to her chest. “And we’ll gush over how lovely his shop is and this Al will look at you and say I was so shy to say anything, but I truly admire you and I was wondering if we could touch and see if we’re meant to be!”
Lucifer’s entire face felt like his blood was boiling. He tackled his sister in a childish act and started tickling her. She laughed and returned the favor. When the bell rang again he had to pull leaves from his hair and pretend he wasn’t flushed and worked up by a damn play fight with his older sister. She always got him into trouble!
Lucifer was both excited to see his customers on Wednesday and also paranoid that Sera would show up. If he tried to complain to his mom, his other siblings or friends would be told and then the lot of them would join in and scare away paying customers. Lucifer huffed and puffed as he put the roses and sunflowers together and then worked on a mixture of multi-colored fairy lights along with yellow spray roses. When the bell dinged Lucifer made his way to the front and smiled at the father and son duo.
“Right on time.” He greeted them and set the flowers on the desk. “I made your crown extra special today.” He told Takuma and from behind his back produced the gift.
Takuma’s eyes widened in surprise when he saw the different colored lights. He took the crown into small hands and turned it over in wonderment before whipping around to shove it into Alastor’s face.
”Awster wook, wook!” He squealed. “Wights!”
Alastor grinned and looked far more excited at Takuma’s words than the crowns. “Yes, darling, it’s beautiful. Can you name all the colors for me?”
Takuma giggled and tapped at the light. “Pink, purpel, blew and yewwow!”
Alastor’s grin widened and he hugged Takuma close. “Very good!” He praised and kissed his cheek.
Lucifer watched them and his heart skipped a beat. His face felt hot and Sera’s words from before sparked embarrassment in him. Because now all he could see was how hot Alastor was and a doting dad was really attractive. Lucifer quickly grabbed the little bag of snacks he had prepared for Takuma and handed them over to Alastor. Their hands touched but the gloves blocked any real contact.
”Some snacks just for you bud!”
Takuma was giddy with his presents and hugged everything to his chest. “Tank you Wucifer!”
Oh gosh darn it he’s so cute! Char-Char would eat him up!
”You’re welcome little buddy.” Lucifer cooed and reached out to ruffle soft curls.
Alastor raised a brow in suspicion and mused. “You did a lot for my boy.”
Lucifer wasn’t paying attention to his little interrogation as he got a high five from Takuma. “Well sure, TK’s my little buddy. He deserves some treats.”
Alastor frowned at the other man. “How much will this come out to be?”
”Oh uh, same as always. I bought this on my own dime, not on the shops. So no extra charges.” Lucifer shrugged and rang them up.
Alastor swiped his card and eyed Lucifer coolly. “Just because you’re nice to my son doesn’t mean you have access to us.”
Lucifer blinked and tilted his head. “Access?”
Alastor rolled his eyes. “Oh please, ever since I became a father the lot of you believe I need a soulmate to help raise him.” He scoffed and looked down his nose. “I’m not interested.”
Lucifer’s jaw hung down in shock before his pride got the better of him. “News flash, I’m not interested either!” He exclaimed.
Alastor huffed and fixed Takuma’s jacket before grabbing his flowers. “They all say the same thing on campus, but they still try to cozy up to my son, as though if they show off to him, I’ll be more inclined to give them a chance.”
”Ugh, you’re a professor.” Lucifer groused and rolled his eyes. “That makes sense, snooty and better than thou attitude fits the mold.”
Alastor bristled at being called out. “Excuse me?!” He hissed. “Is that what you say to a paying customer? I could never come back!”
”Noooo!” Takuma whimpered and both men paused their petty squabble when the waterworks started. “I like Wu, pwease Awster, not never!”
Both Lucifer and Alastor panicked and came together to calm his fears. “Nahh, you can always come see me baby boy!” Lucifer cooed and reached out to pluck him from Alastor’s arms and hug him tight. “We’re best buds.” He promised.
Alastor stood there looking frazzled at making Takuma cry and Lucifer had to chuckle. “First time hurting his feelings?” He guessed.
Alastor reached out to take him back but Takuma held tight. “I never want to hurt him,” he replied with a devastated tone.
Lucifer shrugged while rubbing the boy’s back. “That’s a part of the job sometimes,” he reassured Al. “They hurt our feelings too, it's just a cycle and we say sorry and hug it out. No real damage done, huh TK? You love Al still, right?”
Takuma looked over at Alastor before looking up at Lucifer. “Yeah, I wuv Awster”
Lucifer watched as Alastor’s whole snooty demeanor fell away into this soft dopey smile just for the little boy. “That’s the first time he’s said that.” He murmured and gave him a smile. “I love you too my darling.”
Takuma sniffled and latched onto Lucifer still. “Stay ferever here.”
Lucifer snickered and moved them both behind the counter. “What about giving the flowers to your grandma?”
Takuma frowned. “Gammy ok, she knows.”
”Knows what baby boy?”
”Jus’ knows.”
Alastor sighed in resignation and leaned his hip against the counter. “My Maman watches Takuma on the days I work. They’re sneaky together, always scheming away about something.”
Lucifer smirked and moved Takuma to his hip. “What’re you a professor of?”
”I’m a Linguistics Professor.” Alastor replied and crossed his arms with a frown of betrayal. “I mostly work mornings and then we’re together after lunch.”
”Wednesdays off I assume?”
Alastor nodded. “We eat breakfast, take a walk here and then head back to my car to spend the day with my Maman.”
Takuma was already digging into the baggy of snacks and Lucifer opened the goldfish for him to nibble on. “That’s nice, my sister and my mom come by once a week and have dinner together with me and my daughter. My brothers all live in different states but we see them for holidays.”
”Your father?” Alastor asked, since they were both being nosey.
Lucifer shrugged. “He and my sister run a giant corporation, he’s almost never in town. And yours?”
”Left when I was five, found a lady he liked more than his soulmate.” Alastor supplied.
Lucifer frowned and grabbed a juice box for Takuma like it was second nature. “That’s fu—fudged up, fudged up yep that’s the word for it.”
Despite it all, Alastor started to laugh. He hid his awkward laugh behind the back of his hand and Lucifer again felt his face heat up. Because the laugh was obnoxious and silly. Because Lucifer found it cute and endearing. Because when Alastor laughed, Takuma giggled too without understanding what was happening. And because Lucifer knew he was developing a stupid crush.
He cleared his throat and pressed on. “Well, I don’t actually have any orders for the rest of the day. I’m usually booked solid, but the wedding was cancelled last minute, I got paid but the poor bride sounded upset. Anyways, I can close up, and we can go to the playground around the corner.”
Takuma perked up at the word and looked hopefully at Alastor, whose shoulder slumped in defeat. “Yes, if we’re not troubling you, let’s go to the playground.”
Takuma was practically vibrating with excitement. Lucifer grinned and told Alastor to follow him up the steps. They led to his small two and half bedroom home the size of his shop below. The stairs led straight into his kitchen, and he set Takuma at one of the chairs.
”Let me go change.” Lucifer assured the boy and ruffled his curls again before he disappeared into his room in the back.
Alastor sat beside his boy and quickly fixed wayward curls until he found them perfect. Lucifer came out in a pink sweater and blue jeans with comfy sneakers.
”Alright, let’s head out!” He cheered and grabbed his new little bestie before leading the way downstairs.
Alastor was looming. That new parent protective stance where you were trying to be calm and collected but were racked with nerves at what could happen. Lucifer put on the closed sign and locked up the shop before offering his precious cargo back to his dad. Alastor rushed forward and took Takuma back, settling him under his chin with relief. Lucifer grabbed his free arm at the elbow to lead them in the right direction.
”I promise he won’t float away when he’s not with you.” Lucifer teased him.
Alastor huffed but didn’t brush off his hold. “He used to cling to me, he would be terrified I would leave him all alone at any moment. Keeping him in his own bed wasn’t possible for the first month once he grew comfortable and attached to me. Work was difficult until we created a routine with my Maman.” He explained and walked along the sidewalk with a child in one arm and the blonde on his other.
Lucifer's smile remained as he squeezed Alastor’s elbow. “You’ve worked hard to get him where he is now, you should be proud.”
”I’m always proud of Takuma.” Alastor replied and followed Lucifer down the path that turned to stones and dirt.
When the playground came into view, Alastor pulled away from Lucifer to crouch down and set Takuma on his feet. The boy handed over his empty juicebox and goldfish bag before turning to Lucifer and holding out his hand. The blonde took the tiny hand and led the way to the swings. Alastor stood and threw away the trash before joining them both, looming like a protective demon in black and red while his charges played in the light. Takuma’s giggles and squeals as he swung back and forth had Alastor scooting closer to Lucifer where he pushed.
”I think it’s okay if you need help from time to time.” Lucifer murmured. “You’ve been handling Takuma’s traumas all on your own.”
Alastor shrugged. “He’s not a burden.”
”Well, if you ever need someone to lean on, I’m okay to lend a shoulder.”
Alastor and Lucifer’s eyes met. They shared shy smiles and relaxed as they continued to entertain a four-year-old.
Charlie was always so worried about her dad. Grandma always said he was fine and she just needed to focus on her schooling. Aunt Sera would say the same and wink like she had everything under control.
But neither of them got up in the middle of the night to see her dad stare at a blank TV screen in their tiny living room. No one saw the strain of loneliness when her dad got asked by every new teacher if Mrs. Morningstar would be joining them. Yeah, Lucifer Morningstar was doing worlds better than he had. But he was still so sad. Charlie knew he needed someone to talk to that wasn’t his big overbearing sister or his mom who didn’t always listen to what he was saying. Charlie’s uncles weren’t any better, they all always bulldozed over whatever her dad says and just tried to fix the problem.
The problem is Lucifer Morningstar needed a boyfriend. Very specifically Alastor Landry.
Charlie met Alastor and Takuma one weekend that they popped in to say hi. But she knew about them both prior because her Dad had finally started taking a real day off and closing shop early on Wednesdays and he showed her pictures of an adorable little boy and his dad.
”I told them to come by on the weekend so you can meet them.” Lucifer told her one Friday. “They might stop by tomorrow, we’ll all go to lunch.”
Takuma was adorable. Alastor was so nice and polite. But Charlie locked in on her dad’s expression.
Lucifer Morningstar was smitten!
At lunch Alastor asked her what her interests in college were. They talked about her ideas and what colleges were the best fit for the courses she was interested in. Finding out he worked at the Overlorn College was a big surprise and he offered some tours to see if the school's humanitarian program was right for her. While they talked, Lucifer and Takuma played with little dinosaur toys, her dad making silly roars even while Takuma didn’t engage vocally he smiled and played with the little t-Rex and pretended to eat her dad’s.
But when the talks turned to her dad asking Al how his mother was, Charlie swooped in and had a cute little playmate while the adults talked. The way they looked at each other, with soft eyes and sweet smiles, both definitely felt the same. So why hadn’t they checked to see if they were soulmates?
Alastor never took his gloves off. Not even when their lunch arrived or when he set Takuma in the highchair and cut up his food.
”Are your hands cold Mr. Landry?” Charlie asked.
Lucifer stuttered and choked on his water. “Charlie— “
Alastor chuckled. “Very subtle dear,” he teased Charlie. “I deal with a lot of students who want to be my soulmate. I keep my gloves on because I’m not interested in finding mine.”
Charlie found that odd. “Why?”
”Charlie— “
”Because I don’t believe a soulmate is necessary to find the right person. A soulmate can still turn against you, they’re still just humans. I would rather not give anyone a short cut and make sure they care and put in the work.” Alastor replied easily enough as he ate his sandwich.
To Charlie that made sense. Her mom and dad weren’t soulmates. They fell in love and that was that. No need for a spark of touch to confirm that it was real.
”I agree.” She replied.
Lucifer eyed her with suspicion, but Alastor smiled, none the wiser. “I’m happy to hear that.”
”So since you don’t care about soulmates,” Charlie went on and before he could interrupt she kicked her dad under the table. “You should date my dad.”
”Owww…”
Takuma looked up at her dad in concern. “Wu okay?” He asked sweetly.
”I will be, one sec baby boy.” Lucifer wheezed.
”You gots’a boo-boo?” Takuma pressed and turned to yank Alastor's shirt sleeve. “Awster kiss boo-boo?”
Alastor and her dad were red in the face when they shared a look before turning away.
Alastor cleared his throat and turned to Takuma with a shaky smile. “Adults don’t kiss other adult’s boo-boos my darling.”
Takuma’s little brow furrowed and he looked confused. “Gammy kiss you’s boo-boos.”
Alastor turned another shade redder. “That was a joke, darling, Grammy was teasing me!”
Takuma wasn’t letting this go though, unwittingly becoming Charlie’s co-conspirator. “Gammy says boo-boos seaweus.” He affirmed and pointed to his left elbow. “Give me kisses an’ hugs an’ uh ban’aid.”
Lucifer was no longer in pain, but he was red from holding back his laughter. He stood suddenly and came over to Alastor and offered his cheek. “How about a kiss right here and we’ll call it better, huh baby boy?”
Takuma nodded with a firm nod. “Kisses make better.”
Alastor looked trapped and uncomfortable, yet he sighed and leaned forward to kiss Lucifer’s cheek. Charlie thought this would be it, that they’d know for sure. But just as Alastor leaned in, Lucifer placed a napkin between his cheek and Alastor’s lips that pressed in. When Alastor pulled away in surprise, her dad gave a reassuring smile back and murmured.
”There, all better.”
And then he went back to his seat like he didn’t just pull the ultimate charisma card. Charlie hated to admit it, but her dad was still good at this, he just didn’t realize he was good at it. By the look on Alastor’s face, it certainly flicked a switch for how he saw her dad now.
“Sooo about dating my dad…”
”Charlotte Morningstar—“
”Would next Saturday for dinner be alright?” Alastor asked curiously and Lucifer swiveled so fast he almost fell out of his seat.
“What!?”
”Next Saturday,” Alastor asked again and this time it was his turn to look charming. “Around eight?”
Lucifer flushed but nodded. “Yeah, s-sure!”
”Lovely, it's a date.”
I’m the best wing-man. Charlie thought and ate her lunch.
Sera wasn’t about to miss this. She even came prepared, knowing her brother, with a small bag filled with different outfits for him to choose from. The panicked call that he had a date Saturday night had her planning every possible situation to help her little brother. Lucifer didn’t know what he was supposed to do on a date, so she sent him topics to choose from. He didn’t know who would watch Charlie, so she offered to babysit. Every excuse was met with a solution until the night arrived.
When she came upstairs Charlie and her mother were having dinner while Lucifer was throwing a fit in his room with his bow tie. Sera smiled and walked into his room and shut the door.
“The restaurant isn’t by reservation only, you don’t need to dress up too much Daisy.” Sera teased him and sat on the edge of his bed.
Lucifer sent her a frustrated glare and threw the tie on the ground. “This is the first day I’ve been on in almost seventeen years!” He exclaimed and gestured wildly with his hands. “I really like Al, I don’t want to mess this up with him!”
Sera's smile never wavered as she pulled out a nice purple buttoned shirt and cream-colored slacks. “You’ve been developing quite a friendship since you met in January. I do wish this were a Valentine’s date, but you didn’t listen to me then. Alastor was the one to ask you dear, technically it's on him to impress you.”
Lucifer took the shirt and pants and frowned. “He’s a professor in a big college, I sell flowers. He’s already impressive. I can’t really offer much.”
Sera blinked in surprise. This was new.
“Lucifer, you’re a successful business owner and have been for a decade now!” Sera lectured. “You’ve always been proud of your business, don’t start this self-depreciation now.”
Lucifer grumbled and huffed before going into his tiny closet and shutting the door to change. Sera made a mental note to call their father and start renovations to add another room for the growing family. Lucifer did start his business and rent this building all on his own. But their father bought the building from the previous landlord and has kept the rent the same and handled all the upkeep without telling Lucifer.
When Lucifer came out he looked uneasy and too prim and buttoned. Sera rolled her eyes and stood, unbuttoning the first three buttons, fixing the collar and rolling up his sleeves just below the elbows. She stepped back and took in the fit before going back to the bag and pulling out a brown leather belt and handing it over.
”Tuck in your shirt and put this on.” She instructed and dug out a few more things.
When she turned around Lucifer had done as she said and looked great. But Sera wanted this other man dazzled by her baby brother. Lucifer was a catch damn it. Came over with a light gold necklace and hooked it around his neck and had him put on a softknit sweater that was the barest purple. She grabbed his left wrist and added a nice watch with a pink face and then dropped a dark pair of leather loafers.
”This entire outfit screams my rent for the month.” Lucifer grumbled.
”No it doesn’t, you liar.” Sera corrected because she handled the finances for his rent on both ends.
“There, you look cute!” Sera praised.
Lucifer huffed and picked at the sweater. “First of all, I’m always cute but second of all I’m not meant to be cute I’m meant to be dashing, smooth or whatever kids say these days.”
Sera raised a brow. “You were never dashing or smooth with Lilith. You were sweet and charming with the added addition of being a natural goofball. You look like you all dressed up.”
Lucifer just looked offended. “I was so dashing and smooth! You weren’t there for our dates!”
Sera sucked in her lips and turned away. “You’re going to be late, Daisy.”
Just then the side doorbell rang and Lucifer was darting past her. He beat his mother to the door and stopped to take a deep breath and fix his clothes before he opened it and tried for that dashing he believed himself to be. Sera watched from above the stairwell that led to the door below with her mother and niece as Lucifer leaned against the door frame and crossed his arms. They couldn't see his face from this angle but judging by Alastor’s single eyebrow raise, it was ridiculous.
”Hey there Al,” Lucifer purred out. “You look great tonight.”
Alastor did look more the dashing part. Smartly dressed in a wine-colored turtleneck and black slacks, black overcoat and black dress shoes. He took very good care of his appearance from his hair, glasses and ironed clothes. Sera wondered if she’d underdressed her brother actually. But then she watched as Alastor took in Lucifer in full look and his judgemental brow lowered with his tight smile turning teasing and soft. Those maroon eyes glowed with care and amusement as he leaned down.
”Thank you my dear,” he crooned and reached out a gloved hand to move a stray gold hair back from Lucifer’s brow. “You look pretty tonight. I didn’t realize you owned anything that wasn’t pink.”
Lucifer squeaked out a sound of offense. “Look here mister, pink is a part of my uniform—“
”On the days we go to the park you have worn several distinctly different sweaters, but all of them are pink.” Alastor interrupted and slowly moved closer to Lucifer even as he bristled until he could wrap an arm around his shoulders and pull him away from the doorframe.
”Everybody buys me pink! It’s just what’s in my closet!” Lucifer insisted and stumbled away from the door in shock as Alastor turned around to shut the door with a wave to the group of ladies at the top of the stairs.
”Wait, you think I look pretty?” Lucifer asked and he blushed.
Alastor’s chuckle was cut off when the door shut. Sera, her mother and her niece shared a hopeful look and went back to dinner. Sera really hoped Lucifer enjoyed himself tonight.
When Alastor dropped Takuma off at his Maman’s he’d been a total wreck.
“We’re friends,” he lamented. “Barely friends if only because of Takuma. We have nothing in common.”
Maman stayed suspiciously quiet the entire time while she set Takuma up for his dinner. Alastor followed and couldn’t help but hover and run fingers through soft curls. When did Takuma become his safe space, he couldn’t say. He was supposed to be the safe space for his baby, not the other way around. But Takuma had become his world. And now he felt like he could ruin that by introducing someone else that may be temporary, Takuma needed routine and reassurance that no one was abandoning him.
Alastor refused to acknowledge that the same notion fit him as well. He was a grown man, not a five-year-old little boy asking where his Daddy had gone off too. Not the little boy who sat in a McDonalds with his Daddy and his new girlfriend and told this was his stepmother. Not the boy who saw less and less of that deadbeat of a man because his bitch of a woman was rightfully insecure about her man’s soulmate and their child.
He was well past that obviously.
”You okay, Awster?” Takuma asked and reached out to take one of Alastor’s fingers and hold tight.
Alastor blinked back to the now and leaned down to press a kiss to Takuma’s cheek. He felt Takuma leaned into his affection and his heart hurt that he couldn’t stay. He pulled away to sit and fuss over Takuma’s clothes.
”I’m alright darling,” he assured the boy and gave him a smile. “I have somewhere to be tonight. I’ll be back to pick you up after I finish and then we’ll go home.”
Takuma looked at him with trust and open affection. Alastor knew he needed to leave or he’d be late. He leaned forward to cuddle Takuma close and smother him in kisses until he had the boy giggling. When they pulled apart, Takuma kissed Alastor’s cheek.
”Bye bye.” Takuma bid sweetly.
Alastor made a crushed sound in the back of his throat. “I can just reschedule, Lucifer will understand— “
Caroline had him by the arm and dragged him to the front door. “Goodness, you’d think he was a newborn!” She teased Alastor and shoved him out the door with his coat in hand.
”He’s my child,” Alastor grumbled and crossed his arms. “We haven’t done a nighttime drop off before, he may not react well. What if he thinks I abandoned him?”
Caroline blocked the door and smirked. “Go on yer date an’ I’ll have him watchin’ Disney movies till ya get back.”
Alastor pointed a finger at her. “Nothing traumatizing! He’s sensitive!”
”I know what my baby needs, now go on get!” She laughed and went back inside, closing the door behind her.
Alastor stomped to his car and drove away. But the anxiety he developed after fostering Takuma started to settle in. They were only apart for the times he had his lectures. They ate all their meals together and Alastor was always there to comfort him. Alastor prided himself on being a devoted father, unlike his own. He promised himself he would never choose another person over his child if he ever had one. And now he was going on a date and leaving Takuma behind.
Alastor had himself in a snit by the time he pulled up to the closed flower shop. He stormed to the side door and gave a knock. His smile was tense and ready to find the first thing he could to call off this date and get back to his boy.
But when the door opened and Lucifer leaned against the doorframe, looking like a goofball trying to be cool, he just couldn’t. Lucifer looked adorable in pastel purple, a favorite of Takuma. His hair wasn’t its usual slick back but curled just slightly and added a boyish charm. He was red in the face despite trying to be suave and Alastor’s heart skipped a beat. This was the same man who made special flower crowns for his son and bought snacks to add as a treat just because. Lucifer didn’t try to use Takuma to get closer and in fact liked Takuma more than Alastor in the beginning.
When he wrapped his arm around Lucifer’s shoulders, the tightness in his chest abated. Lucifer leaned against his side and when he audibly swallowed his own nerves, Alastor rubbed at his shoulder.
”I hope you like steak.” Alastor started them off once he had them in his warm car. “There’s a lovely steakhouse I haven’t been to in some time.”
Lucifer blinked as he put on his seatbelt. “I can’t remember the last time I went as far as the block I live on for dinner.”
Alastor smiled then and drove off. “Then this is my treat, oh and, Lucifer,”
”Hm?”
”Yes, I did say you look very pretty tonight.”
Lucifer's lips pulled wide and his eyes went big. “Uh… t-thanks?” He squeaked out.
Alastor grinned back. “You’re quite welcome my dear.”
He knew he was laying this whole thing on a bit thick. But throughout their meet ups and time together, Lucifer always seemed to have the answer to his dilemmas as a parent, praising Alastor for what he’s accomplished with Takuma. And that trick with the napkin while getting that kiss, Alastor will admit, was very smooth.
But Lucifer was also out of his depth here as well. He was a single father who hadn't gone out on a date since he found his wife in college. They both had things to fumble through, but Alastor was determined to be the one in control here. Besides, Lucifer looked nice in red too.
He asked about the big wedding order that had Lucifer frazzled the last two weeks. Lucifer calmed enough with the discussion of work to go on and on about the bride being a bridezilla.
“Actually, between you and me,” Lucifer murmured. “The guy she’s marrying used to date my wife. This is his second marriage too.”
Alastor hummed. “At least it wasn’t the third.”
Lucifer snickered meanly. “Lilith couldn’t stand him. They only went out for a few weeks. We met up when he left her to walk home. I picked her up in my beat-up Honda.”
Alastor furrowed his brow. “Now, don’t think I'm rude, but I did look into you’re a little when we began this friendship. After all, you were very friendly with my son. The Morningstar name has quite a bit of fame and money behind it. Why wouldn’t you be living similarly?”
Lucifer shrugged. “I’m the only one who didn’t choose a corporate job. I only went to college to understand how to run a business. I was supposed to go into engineering, but my heart wasn’t in it. My dad and I had a falling out for a while and I was on my own. My mom made sure I had money for stuff but once I had my business I could handle myself.”
Alastor hummed as he looked for a place to park. “How is your relationship with your father now?”
Lucifer shrugged again and pushed up his sleeve to cool off his arms. “We’re fine. Plus, he’s never around, which is just the same old, same old. Why mix it up when the routine has been the same, judge from afar and send in my mom and sister.”
Alastor sighed. “We have similar experiences with fathers then.” He hedged a guess.
Lucifer gave a rueful smile. “Hey, that’s alright, we know exactly what not to do.”
Alastor laughed and parked the car. “No truer statement has ever been said.”
They climbed out of the car at the same time which miffed Alastor just slightly, he wanted to open the door for him. But he came around and gave him his arm which Lucifer took as always. Even with the gloves, Lucifer never tried to hold hands. Alastor couldn’t believe they’ve known each other since January, and it was almost the end of March.
”On the 3rd day of April will be Takuma’s official fifth month in my care.” He spoke up in their companionable silence.
Lucifer squeezed his arm. “When you adopted him?”
Ah, he did fudge the truth back then. “He’s technically still in foster care. They have to exhaust all avenues of familial connection before I’m allowed to start the adoption paperwork. Most have declined since his birth makes him… they don’t want a child born from an affair.” He decided to not mince words.
Lucifer frowned and huddled close when another couple walked by. He smelled like the dirt he used in the shop, along with the florals that he put together.
”What’s the last one?”
“The father.”
“They can’t just call him up and get a yes or a no?”
Alastor wished it were that easy. “Apparently he’s been out of the country. And getting the information of who fathered Takuma was very difficult to begin with. Once his caseworker can confirm he has no interest in raising Takuma, I’ll be able to proceed.”
Lucifer nodded. “Good,” he said with finality. “You are his father, you just need to make it official.”
Alastor covered Lucifer’s cold hand with his gloved one. “Precisely.”
Talk around dinner was safer topics after that. Such as showing off pictures of their kids and gushing over how cute they were. Alastor mentioned with the weather getting warmer perhaps on Charlie’s spring vacation they could try camping.
Lucifer smirked. “You like camping.” He asserted dubiously.
Alastor side eyed him, unsure if that tone was meant to offend him or not. “I adore the outdoors. I actually bought a cabin a few hours away. I enjoy going up there for some peace and quiet. Why don’t we make a trip there?”
Lucifer frowned and sipped his appletini. “I guess I could see if Anthony would want the hours…”
Alastor raised a brow. “You only have one other employee?”
”Yeah well, I make good money but not enough to have multiple people working for me. Plus, I live just upstairs, I can show up and work no problem.” Lucifer waved away. “I have a few weddings on spring break, but I could take Thursday, Friday and the weekend.” Lucifer offered instead
Alastor could agree to that. “I’ll bring the groceries for us, you make sure to bring extra sleeping bags. The cabin only has two rooms.”
Lucifer frowned. “I can chip in on the groceries.”
But Alastor waved his hand. “I insist, considering the amount of money you’ve spent on snacks and whatnot for Takuma.”
And that was that Alastor refused to argue about it and ordered Lucifer dessert. They shared an apple crumble and Alastor paid before Lucifer could try to go Dutch.
”I can afford to pay for things.” Lucifer insisted.
”I know you can,” Alastor assured him and this time he opened the door this time for his date. “But I invited you out, I invited you to my cabin and you’ll be closing up shop when you could be making money. I’ll handle the food, you handle the fun.”
The drive back was talks of what they would need at the cabin and Lucifer pulled out his phone to start his Amazon order. Alastor asked him to send likes and dislikes of food between himself and dear Charlie. By the time they came up to the shop, they had a game plan and an idea for what they would eat.
Alastor still insisted on walking Lucifer to the side door. But when Lucifer went to open the door, Alastor stopped him and leaned in. Blue eyes widened in surprise but just before lips met his cheek, Alastor had a thin piece of paper in between.
”Goodnight Lu, I had a lovely time.” He murmured before pulling away and stuffing his hands into his pockets and walking away.
When he pulled up to his Maman’s house, he beelined for the door and quickly went inside. He found Takuma curled up on the couch with his favorite stuffed animal and blanket with Cinderella playing So This Is Love. He stopped and his face softened at the sight of a sleepy four-year-old in his blue pajamas covered in whales. Alastor took off his jacket, shoes and his gloves before crawling onto the couch and gently moved the bundle onto his chest to hold close.
So this is love, mmhmm… So this is loooove. So this is what makes life divine…
Alastor thought of Lucifer’s smiles and laughter, of how excited he got to see pictures of Takuma and getting to be there and experience Takuma’s first time camping. Likewise, Alastor was excited to teach Charlie how to fish and kayak, he thought she would love all the wildlife. The thought of quiet early mornings before the children woke up with just himself and Lucifer played in his mind as he slowly drifted off with the warmth of his baby curled up over his heart.
So this is the miracle that I’ve been dreaming oooof…
So this is looooove…..
Lucifer insisted they use his delivery van for all their stuff. Four people in Alastor’s car plus all their stuff for the next 4 days were not going to happen and Alastor had to agree.
The van had a hand holding a half-eaten apple on the side, but the inside of the apple was a rose. The name of the shop is plastered in artistic cursive in pink. Alastor for once wasn’t dressed to the nines but in a white Henley with work gloves on. Old jeans and worn sneakers. Takuma was adorably dressed in a matching Henley and new jeans with lavender colored sneakers his Maman found. He and Charlie were playing upstairs together while their parents packed up the back of the van behind the shop.
“Okay,” Lucifer said in excitement. “I think we're all good here!”
He was in a pink shirt and khaki shorts with white sneakers. Alastor had absolutely teased him upon seeing the pink shirt. But he wouldn’t allow Lucifer to change.
”Let’s just hope you packed a few other colors, hm?” He tacked on and valiantly didn’t laugh when Lucifer took off upstairs to repack.
Now though, everything was ready to go. The cooler filled to the brim for the next four days. It was into the afternoon on Wednesday, at Lucifer’s insistence they could leave a little early, so they had a full four days. Alastor followed Lucifer up the steps to the home above and found Charlie and Takuma playing a memory card game for matches.
Charlie looked up and pointed her thumb at Takuma. “He’s got an amazing memory.”
Takuma grabbed two matching cards and set them aside before looking up and grinning. “This is fun!”
Alastor returned the grin and squatted down. “It’s time to leave.” He cautioned.
Takuma didn’t fuss, he never did. He nodded and leaned forward to turn every card that was a match face up and won the game. “Done!”
Charlie gaped at him in shock. “We literally just started and only turned over four cards.”
Alastor smirked. “Takuma can count cards, dear, that's why when he’s older he’s forbidden to gamble unless it's at my friend Husker’s casino.” He explained and picked Takuma up.
The trip had them at the cabin by ten at night. The kids were asleep and Alastor wondered how Lucifer was possibly going to pick up his daughter who was already taller than him at fifteen. Still, he watched impressed as Lu did just that with ease. Alastor gently unbuckled Takuma and wrapped him up in his blanket before cradling him against his chest and leading the way with the flashlight to his cabin.
They made sure the kids were made comfortable on the beds before grabbing blankets and pillows. Everything else could be brought in when they had a good night's sleep. They did change into pj’s for themselves and Alastor changed Takuma. Lucifer shook Charlie awake to change and waited until she called out before opening the bedroom door.
”Night Al,” Lucifer yawned and waved.
”Good night, Lu.” Alastor murmured.
They didn’t get much sleep though. The moment the sun was peeking through the curtains both the teen and the little were up and excited. Alastor had hoped to at least have some coffee before Takuma’s little hands had his face.
”G’morning.” He whispered.
”Morning darling.” Alastor slurred and wrapped his arms around the boy to pull him back into the warmth of blankets.
Takuma giggled but cuddled close and yawned. “M’hungry.”
Alastor sighed and reached out for their glasses. “Alright my love.” He murmured and had them out of bed and out the door.
Lucifer was already up and bright eyed. He smiled at them as he made pancakes and bacon.
”Goood mooorning!”
Alastor smiled and set Takuma in his highchair that Lucifer must’ve grabbed. “Good morning Lu.”
Charlie came through the front door with their bags and a bright smile. “Morning Al, morning TK!”
Takuma grinned. “G’morning Chawie!”
The teen set the bags down and immediately took the seat next to Takuma. “Did you sleep well?” She asked and took in his pajamas. “I like your pjs!”
Takuma beamed and pointed at the sea creatures on his shirt and told her what each animal was. Alastor backed away and came to stand beside Lucifer who held out a hot mug of coffee by the top rim. Belatedly, Alastor realized he didn’t have his gloves on. He took the mug gratefully and sipped.
”For some reason I believed you were the type to sleep in.”
Lucifer sighed as he added batter to the skillet. “I am, trust me, but Charlie not so much. She wanted to get the day started at five am.”
Alastor looked over at him and really looked this time. He had purple circles under his eyes and they were red. Despite that, his smile remained and Alastor was impressed.
“Lu,” He murmured gently and caught the shorter man’s attention. “You’re not a single dad today. Go ahead and grab some rest and I’ll cook breakfast. You drove us out here after all, you must be exhausted.”
Lucifer stared in shock for a moment before Alastor gently bumped his hip against the smaller man and took up the space in front of his stove. “Go rest.” He repeated and plucked the spatula from his slack grip without touching fingers.
Lucifer nodded in a daze and went back to his room and shut the door. Alastor hummed a tune to himself while he stacked pancakes, cooked bacon and started scrambling eggs.
”Can I have cheese in mine, Alastor?” Charlie asked while pouring Takuma some milk in his sippy cup.
”Of course dear.” Alastor replied.
By the time Lucifer came back out for some water, Alastor was about to knock on the door and the two almost ran into each other. The blonde’s arms pinwheeled in a mad attempt to not touch Alastor, but the other man grabbed his shoulders with now gloved hands.
”Breakfast is ready.” He said in lieu of greeting and guided his companion to the dining table.
The short trip was filled with mornings like this. Of laughter and companionship, of the children playing in the field and Charlie teaching Takuma how to make his own crowns with the wildflowers that grew around the cabin. Alastor and Lucifer sat on the porch swing and cozied up with coffee while they listened to giggles and nature.
By the end of the weekend no one was ready to go. However, school persisted for two and one needed to keep the lights on.
One person however had his first meltdown that Alastor had ever witnessed.
“No pwease, wanna stay!” Takuma sobbed on the steps.
Alastor knelt in the dirt and cupped his wet face with bare hands. “Darling we can come back, we’ll have a weekend here if you’d like.” He tried to offer but Takuma wailed.
”I wanna wev wif Wu and Chawie!” He sobbed horribly. “I wuv dem!”
Both Morningstar’s lost their own composure, and their eyes went big with sniffles.
”We love you too!” They said and wrapped around Alastor and Takuma.
Alastor sighed. These Morningstar’s were going to be the death of him.
The rest of the year found the two families coming together more and more. Caroline invited them for dinner at her home and filled the quiet home with laughter and cheer. They did the same at the flower shop and the home above. Lucifer felt unsure about his home opening up to everyone when there wasn’t enough room. Charlie on the other hand set the table and helped Liz make dinner. Sera sat Lucifer down and patted his cheek with glee.
When the Landry’s came over, Takuma jumped into Lucifer’s lap with ease and showed him his new book.
The families meshed.
And one day Takuma’s caseworker came to call.
“Alastor,” Rosie grinned and looked at the curious little boy in his lap. “Takuma.” She chuckled and slid the paperwork across the table.
”Congratulations, you’re father and son officially.”
Alastor didn’t know how to react at first. He dreamed of this day for so many months. He also had nightmares that he’d lose someone who changed his world for the better. All this time of fearing tomorrow would be their last day together because someone decided they wanted his baby was now gone. His heart beat fast yet his mind was frozen. Takuma on the other hand turned with watery eyes and looked up at him.
”You my Papa now?” He wobbled out.
Lucifer started to cry from the other side of the table and covered his mouth to hold back his sobs. Alastor felt hot tears roll down his cheek as he looked at his precious little boy. The only regret he’d ever had was not being able to hold him from the moment he was born.
”Yes my darling,” he replied with a crack in his voice and wiped at Takuma’s tears with a trembling smile. “But you’ve always been my baby.” He replied and caught Takuma when he wrapped around his neck with happy cries.
Lucifer had his phone out and took a picture of them. Rosie cooed and said. “You should get that framed.”
Lucifer decided that they needed a date night after so much excitement. Charlie jumped on the chance to watch Takuma and his mother was equally as excited to babysit her grandchildren. Both Lucifer and Alastor shared a besotted smile at the notion that Liz and everyone already saw them as family. Lucifer actually went ahead and made the leap to buying a ring. Sure, they’ve only known each other for almost a year now. It was Christmas already—how time flew by—but he couldn’t imagine not having Alastor and Takuma for the rest of his life and he hoped Alastor felt the same.
It did bring up the matter of actually touching each other to mind. Alastor still wore his gloves, and they still exchanged kisses between paper. It turned into their thing and Lucifer didn’t question it. He wanted Alastor to feel safe and trust him. But he hoped once he pulled out the ring, Alastor would want to move past the whole soulmate issue. Lucifer didn’t care with Lilith, and he wouldn’t care with Alastor. He would always love him.
The restaurant was romantic. A table for two. Lucifer wore dark red with a black vest that had a little heart sewn on the front. His black dress pants were tailored by Sera’s personal tailor, and she fitted him with a nice pair of shoes. He wanted to look as nice as possible when he did this.
“Dear, what are you wearing red of all colors?” Alastor crooned and tugged on his collar. “I think I prefer you in pastels, you’re such a pretty thing, like an angel.”
Lucifer stumbled and stuttered. “I-I can go change— “He squeaked out but Alastor had his upper arm and pulled him along.
”No, we have reservations. We can’t afford to be late.”
Lucifer panicked. What if Alastor didn’t like what he saw and said no when he revealed the ring?
”Oh Lu, it was only an observation.” Alastor teased him. “You look good in anything you wear, love.”
Lucifer tried to shake out the nerves and slapped his hands against his cold cheeks. “Yeah, yeah.” He nodded and cracked a big smile. “All good, just want our date to be perfect. We haven’t been out together in a while.” He explained.
When they got to the restaurant and took their seats, they went through the motions with their waiter and Lucifer ordered a bottle of wine much to Alastor’s intrigue.
”You’re not much of a wine drinker.” Alastor mused and looked at him with mild suspicion.
Lucifer grinned in return. “A nice, sweet wine for dessert after dinner isn’t unheard of!”
Alastor hummed but left it alone and they started discussing their week. Lucifer was actually quite busy during December. Lots of holiday parties and whatnot liked to order from him. Alastor just finished destroying his students with his midterm finals.
”A few of them cried,” Alastor said with a demented little smile. “It brought joy to my heart.”
Lucifer rolled his eyes. “What if Duckie and Duckling get a professor that makes them cry and Duckling calls you full of anxiety thinking he failed?”
Alastor paused and Lucifer knew the thought of Takuma crying over anything set him in a tizzy. Having both the kids cry over a bad grade seems to make him rethink his opinion. But only for a second before he waved it off.
”Dear Charlie will be going to my campus, no one will make our girl Charlie cry knowing I’m watching out for her. And anyone who makes Takuma cry will be found dead in the river.” He said plainly.
Lucifer snorted. “In another life, you would have been a serial killer for sure.”
Alastor grinned. “Why thank you! The thought did appeal to me once, but I poured myself into my studies instead.”
Lucifer smiled like an idiot in love. “Red is your color, so you would have been beautiful either way.”
Both men chuckled at their dark joke and moved on to other topics.
Lucifer grew nervous when they finally got to dessert and the wine was brought out. The waiter had the ring box and had it all set up in a romantic way with the box open next to the wine glass that had a rose set on the other side.
Alastor’s face went blank with surprise as he stared down. Lucifer swallowed and watched for a few seconds before he spoke up and tried not to squirm under Alastor’s intense eyes.
”I know we haven’t known each other long,” he stuttered out and kept his smile in place. “But I love you and I love Takuma. I want to keep you both with me forever or as long as we have. So, um…” he took a deep breath. “Alastor, will you marry me?”
Alastor didn’t say anything at first. He looked back at the ring and slowly, deliberately, he took off his gloves. Lucifer watched as Alastor pulled out the simple gold band and put it on his finger.
”I say yes.” Alastor murmured and finally smiled. “I’d love to spend our lives together.”
Lucifer grinned big and took a deep breath. “Oh, thank God, I probably would have cried if you said no.” He replied and reached for his wine glass.
Alastor met his hand and Lucifer pulled back out of instinct. They shared an unsure look before Lucifer held out his hand, palm up. Alastor smiled and held his hand above.
”I don’t know why I’m being silly about this,” Alastor reasoned. “You’ve already had your soulmate.”
Lucifer blinked. “Nope, Lilith and I weren’t soulmates. We just loved each other.”
Alastor looked up in shock. “What now?”
Lucifer grinned and interlaced their fingers. “I never met my soulmate, that stuff never mattered to me— “
A shiver of pleasure shot up his arm and filled his mind with a clarity he’s never known. Like fireworks going off behind his eyes and a warmth of safety encompassing his entire being. Both hands clamped down on one another and they gasped in shock.
”Lu—“ Alastor whispered in shock.
Lucifer shot up, laid down cash for the tip since everything was prepaid for and dragged Alastor out of the restaurant. Neither noticed how everyone had witnessed two people who just got engaged also find out they were soulmates afterwards. There wasn’t a dry eye in the place.
”It’s like I just watched a damn movie.” The waiter sobbed.
Lucifer dragged his fucking soulmate towards the Christmas lit path before he turned and jumped up to wrap his arms around Alastor’s neck and finally kiss him for real. Alastor wrapped him up in his arms and held him tight while returning their first kiss. Lucifer shivered in pleasure as their touch brought more of this wonderful feeling. He dragged his fingers through Alastor’s hair up the back of his neck and the taller man moaned against his lips.
When they pulled apart, panting against the other’s lips, Alastor said. “I’m a fucking idiot.”
”That’s okay, you’re a hot idiot.” Lucifer replied and pulled him back down.
The waiter found them five minutes later, mussed up hair and kissed bruised lips, to give them their jackets.
”You forget these and your gloves, sir.” He said and handed them over. “Also, thank you for proving love wins.” He sobbed and walked away.
They put their coats quickly before Alastor had Lucifer against the wall and devoured his mouth. Lucifer moaned now and licked into his mouth. They were drunk on each other’s touch. A need to never let go and stay glued to each other was a feeling they’ve never known.
”Oh, Lucifer.” Alastor murmured now against his throat. “All this time, you were mine.” He mourned and sucked at Lucifer’s pulse point.
Lucifer tugged at his curls. “If you leave a mark we’ll never hear the end of it!”
Alastor giggled with hysterical glee. “We spent a year of knowing one another and all this time you were mine. I’m never hearing the end of this from anyone.” He replied and kissed Lucifer’s face over and over again. “Mine and I love you.”
Lucifer grew teary eyed and hugged his soulmate close. “I love you too.”
