Quirks of the Human Realm

Summary:

Amity and the gang learn about the Human Realm, one "pay-per clorp" (Gus' way of saying "paperclip") at a time.

This is like a series of one-shots.

Chapter 1: Amity Discovers Cereal

Summary:

This is a refined edit.

Chapter Text

Amity Blight expected the Human Realm to be gray, barbaric, and mundane. But she had not expected supermarkets. Ten minutes after entering one, she stood frozen in the cereal aisle, eyes wide, surrounded by hundreds of identical boxes screaming in bright colors.
“They eat this for breakfast?” she whispered, clutching a box labeled Frosted Mega-Sugar Blasts.
    Luz nodded. “Sometimes for dinner.”
Amity read the ingredients, grew paler, and muttered, “This is alchemy. Extremely irresponsible alchemy.”
A nearby shopper stared as Amity bowed solemnly to a shelf of toaster pastries. “Your world is terrifying,” she declared, reverently.

Back at Luz’s house, they placed the cereal box on the bed with respect, as it it were a sacred text. Amity read every word aloud, suspicious of each syllable, until she froze.
“Luz,” she said slowly, tapping a corner. “This claims there is a coupon for a free video game inside the box.”
Luz gasped. “Oh yeah! I forgot about that!”
"Hours of zapping zombies! Count me in."
Amity immediately opened the box with surgical precision, extracting the tiny slip of paper. They spent what seemed like an hour carefully filling it out, debating the ethics of corporate generosity, then ceremonially slid it into an envelope.
As they sealed it, Amity whispered, awed, “Your world rewards you for eating sugar.”
Luz grinned. “It's America for you.”
