Work Text:
Lena Luthor realized she was in trouble the day she asked Kara to attend that first gala and Mike The Manchild behaved overly familiar with Kara. Lena's eyes and soul were green with jealousy and as she returned to L-Corp that day, she came to terms with the fact that she was smitten with Kara and her sunny disposition. Still, Lena was not interested in engaging in romantic relationships, so she placed her crush in a dark corner of her mind and focused on the friendship.
She and Kara built a solid friendship. They shared in a lot of similar family dynamics despite their apparent differences, especially after Lena and Kara dealt with the whole being from Krypton thing. Lena wasn't blind to Kara's idiosyncrasies and out-of-time interjections, so once the truth was in the open, they quickly dove into what life was like as a weird teen, desperately trying to fit into a place not designed for them.
Everything seemed to be going smoothly until the day Lena caught Kara and Jess together, outside her office door, quietly studying a computer screen together, whispering. Kara had a to-go tray with two cups of coffee, and a third was in Jess' hand, jostling as Jess gestured with it in her hand, pointing out empty spaces in Lena's schedule. That was the day that Lena learned Jess was blocking Kara into her life in the gaps between meetings and intentionally leaving Games Nights blank so that Lena wouldn't have to politely decline every time.
After the two shyly explained what they had been doing, Lena gave Jess a generous bonus and instructed them to continue as they were. After all, their conspiracy had a lot of positive benefits for everyone. It was another six months before a dinner reservation showed up in Lena's calendar unannounced titled, 'Our First Date'.
(Let's be clear on one thing before we continue: Kara did ask Lena directly out on a date. It's just that Jess and Kara did the scheduling: found a good night to do it, picked the restaurant. Lena's responsibilities started and ended at picking an appropriate wardrobe.)
---
Lena had long before learned it was better to not ask too many questions when an event appeared with the title 'Study Date'. She simply checked the notes and did as instructed: wore casual clothes and sunscreen, and brought a book. Kara met Lena at her apartment and Frank took them to Centennial Park. Kara unloaded a picnic basket and led Lena along a path to a large, shady oak tree. They encountered a relaxed looking Alex, splayed across a blanket, staring up at the clouds. When she saw Lena and Kara approaching, Alex got up to leave
"Thanks, Alex, I owe you, this is my favorite spot."
Kara sat cross-legged on the blanket and Lena followed suit. Kara looked slightly anxious, so Lena held her hand and waited patiently.
"Remember when I told you about high school, and how we both didn't get that experience of listening to a CD on a shared pair of headphones? Well, I thought we could get a taste of that today."
Kara pulled a beaten up Sony Discman from the picnic basket, followed by a pair of white earbuds. "Do you want right or left?"
Lena melted. Kara was constantly doing thoughtful things like this, finding ways to experience little moments together, things they couldn't or didn't experience in their teens. This was one of those moments. Lena closed the space between them, taking the right earbud and kissing Kara.
Kara pulled out an orange CD that Lena recognized: Counting Crows' August And Everything After. "I know it was already old when I fell in love with this CD, but I want to share it with you. Come here?"
Kara uncrossed her legs and relaxed against the tree, waiting for Lena. She crawled over and settled into Kara's torso, quietly taking in how it felt to have Kara hold her like that. Kara put the left earbud in and hit play.
They snuggled into each other as the opening notes of Round Here entered their ears. Lena looked up into Kara's eyes and wished she'd brought the ring. It would have been a perfect moment.
Luckily, with Kara Davners, every day felt like the perfect day.
