Benton grimaces in dismay as Carter slackens and grows heavy against him, hands falling free of Benton’s shirt to dangle at his sides, fingertips just grazing the floor as his forearms swing loosely from suddenly unlocked elbows.
But his breathing quickly begins to correct itself, slowing into a deep and steady rhythm, and Benton gives thanks for small mercies.
Carter’s tears still leach through the fabric of his scrubs where his face rests, and Benton’s chest hitches once. Twice. Again.
In the freeing shadows of solitude, Peter clutches his student closer, buries his face against his shoulder, and weeps.
