Orphic: A Retelling

Summary:

Sophie Foster doesn't know what it feels like to be safe. She was yanked out of her childhood and thrown into a huge mess that she has to clean up. No one can help her, how could they? They wouldn't understand. She started this alone, so she's going to finish it alone.

AKA bc I suck at summaries: Kotlc 1 but in a world where Sophie had awful parents and an awful upbringing.

TW: implied self-harm, childhood abuse, mental abuse, physical abuse, self-hate, suicidal thoughts, implied suicide attempts (none of them are graphic, but just in case :) )

Chapter 1: Prologue

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

Memories drifted through Sophie’s brain, each leaving a sharp sting in its wake.

Her brain swam through unconsciousness, her body begging for air, but she resisted.

She knew what was waiting for her in the darkness.

Monsters, monsters like she’d dealt with before.

Monsters that kept chasing her, relentlessly. Screaming her name, bathing in her fears…they knew it all.

She’d never escape again.

Her muscles hurt and she tried to scream–not for help–but as a way to know that she existed.

She was still here, swimming between two parallels, floating, waiting…for what?

Cogito, ergo sum.

Would she die? Would they kill her? Or more importantly, did it matter?

That was the question daunting her, had Sophie ever mattered? Or was everyone right?

She was a burden, an ache, a nuisance.

She was like dying, and forgetting Charon’s obol. Too late to go back, but too early to move on.

She’d been too naive, too selfish, to ever come to the realization that it had never been about her.

She was the pawn, not the game.

Notes:

Soo. Here we are. What I was thinking when I wrote this, idk. BUT. I was thinking of like how someone's parents can change their entire personality so we're sacrificing our Snowflake for this experiment. The poor thing is gonna need a lot of help by the time this is over.
Also, ngl, I wanted a more mature version of Kotlc where it didn't take 6 books to get a single kiss and 2.5 more to get another one, so here it is.
Enjoy! :)
