Work Text:
Jumping between rooftops to catch a thief was definitely not on Goro’s detective training especially when his job focuses more on the media side of things. At least he’s got his years of bouldering, but that amounts to nothing when his foot catches on a ledge and he slips and ends up falling between buildings. Only to be caught by the enemy swinging on what appears to be a grappling hook?!
He’s safely deposited on one of the rooftops, making this the perfect time to talk to the thief. Maybe distract him enough for backup to make it to them. Goro doesn’t believe the thieves to be as violent as the media may portray which he can use to his advantage. He’s engaged the man in conversation before, but he always manages to slip away time and time again. He’s about to say something when the other man starts instead.
“Well, glad I caught you in time, see you, detective!” He says before disappearing into the night.
Goro Akechi wasn’t one to waste time, especially with his near-endless supply of college and detective work. Glancing up at the clock in the secluded cafe, he notes Ann’s friend is running over half an hour late. Normally the brunette wouldn’t waste his time with a no-show, but he promised Ann to at least meet with him, and his detective internship doesn’t pay the best these days. And maybe the free coffee was just another incentive added to the list. The owner, noticing his frequent glancing towards the window whenever someone passes by, sighs. “What did I tell that boy about being punctual?” Goro turns to the cafe owner, opting to ask of ‘that boy’s whereabouts, but is interrupted by a chime from the door.
“Sorry, I was late! My cat’s been under the weather and the trains were running late,” a man with a messy mop of black hair and glasses says, after running into the cafe. The owner just shakes his head dismissively and turns back towards the kitchen. Ann’s friend extends his hand to shake the detective, “You can call me Akira, you must be Goro, right?”
“It’s Akechi to you,” he huffs, ignoring his extended hand, “and you didn’t have the courtesy to inform me or at the very least Ann of your whereabouts?”
He holds up the phone, clicking the power button only to yield a blank screen, “Ah, Sorry. My phone died on the train.”
The brunette looks at his potential roommate up and down. The raven-haired man running his fingers through his birdnest of hair, a nervous tic perhaps? Something about the man seems familiar to him. It makes him want to delve further, but Ann said to not scare off her friend so he pushes aside his instincts. But she will be hearing about the lateness from him later. The detective is snapped out of his thoughts by a hand waving in his face, “Hello? Jeez, I know I’m hot but you don’t have to stare that long,” the other man grins teasingly.
“You- ugh, It’s nothing like that! You just seem oddly familiar, have we perhaps met before?” he sputters.
“Not likely, I mean maybe since we both know Ann we were bound to cross paths at one point?” the ravenette fidgets with his hair again.
“That's true,” Definitely a nervous tic. Goro stores that thought for later, deciding to ask, “So tell me about yourself? Ann didn’t really elaborate, only really telling me you were also looking for a roommate.”
“Ah- yes so my name is Akira Sakura, I’m 22 years old, I’ve got a dozen part-time jobs and spend a bunch of time helping my friends so you won’t have to worry about seeing me around much, oh and I’ve got a cat! Ann told me a lot about you! Nothing about how handsome you are in person, but she did show me a bunch of the pictures of your place.”
Goro nods, trying his best to ignore the other comment. Putting on his best TV smile he says, “Well, I’m assuming you already know the basics? That I’m 23 years old and work as an intern detective while studying law, you may have seen me on tv before?”
“Yup! Can’t believe I’ll be rooming with the famous second coming of the detective prince,” he says with another teasing grin.
His smile becomes more strained only nodding in response. How could Ann think he would be able to tolerate this idiot? Maybe that’s why she didn’t mention anything apart from how much of a ‘nice guy’ he is. Urgh, he can’t afford to be too picky with how much his landlord has hiked up rent lately. I mean seriously you’d think being a ‘detective prince’ would pay a little better. He’s interrupted suddenly by one of his interviews playing on the cafe’s TV. He notices himself talking about the situation regarding the phantom thieves when he notices a familiar voice from the answering audience member.
“I think they do a hell of a lot more than the cops.”
It’s unmistakably the man sitting across from him. He glances over to Akira who’s only grinning at him. Goro finally remembers him from the audience that day sitting next to Ann just a week ago. No wonder he seems so familiar, this isn’t their first meeting.
“Finally recognize me now?” he smirks.
“Ah, so that you’ve been to one of my interviews before. You really are intriguing. I bet you’d make for a worthwhile debate partner.”
“I'm assuming that's your weird way of saying yes to being roommates?”
“Yes, yes, whatever, when will you be moving in?”
“Uh- I was thinking today, my stuff’s already packed up and ready to go.”
“Well here’s my address, I’ll meet you there to let you in and give you the keys.”
“Gotcha!”
Akechi turns to leave when he’s stopped by three words he's heard numerous times.
