You Got Me in Awe (because je te vois)

Summary:

People see blurry until they find their soulmate - then the faces of the world are cleared up.

Work Text:

Hazy images.

Foggy faces.

Blurry people.

Yoongi longed to see a world without that. His eyes hated seeing people as a mess of smeared images. Buildings and cars and nature – everything that was not human, could be seen without a hitch. But every single person around him was blurry. Their hands were blobs of different light and dark tones. Clothes were patches of blues and whites and blacks and every other damn color imaginable. But their faces were even less clear. He had no idea what his best friend looked like. The only people he could see were his parents and himself. Everyone else was a complete mess of moving blobs of smeared colors.

Usually, Yoongi wouldn’t mind not being able to see everyone. He never really took an interest or wondered what people looked like. When he was a kid, it was fun guessing what his friends or teachers looked like. He would try and match random characteristics to everyone he encountered. Sure, he sometimes wondered what people actually looked like, but  he knew he would only find out when he was older. His parents told him that when he grows up and finally meets his soulmate, he would be able to see the one he loves and then everyone else in the world would follow. That as soon as he found his perfect match, his eye sight would become perfect as well.

But now that he was 24, he still saw nothing but blurry bodies and equally as blurry faces. Wasn’t it already time for his soulmate to show up? He was an adult and still saw a world full of people he had no real idea of what they looked like. His best friend Namjoon had already found his soulmate. In fact, he had found Seokjin when they were seniors in high school. His soulmate happened to be the new transfer student in their literature class. Namjoon had tightened his hand around Yoongi’s pale wrist with an exclamation of ‘it’s him!’ and ‘he’s beautiful!’ – and just like that, his world cleared up.

Seokjin made their duo become a trio. And Yoongi couldn’t have been happier for his best friend. Namjoon’s world cleared up and he was in a happy relationship with Seokjin. The three of them would play games where Yoongi would try and describe their teachers or classmates, and the two would tell him what he got right or wrong. It was fun at first, but then he started longing to see what they saw.

Now, seven years later, he was still longing to see that. He was beginning to think he would never get to see what they saw. Never see what faces other than his or his parents looked like. How square or round faces could be. How small or how big eyes could be. How thin or thick lips could be. He’s only ever felt them once when he kissed Namjoon in his bedroom when they were thirteen and curious. His only reference points for a visual rests in his parents and his own face. And the only person he’s ever touched is Namjoon, but he wants to touch someone else – he wants to touch his soulmate.

In a world full of soulmates, people didn’t date until they either found their one true match or got bored, desperate, and/or impatient waiting. Yoongi figured he would wait or die waiting. It was rather disheartening, but he believed that they were out there just waiting to have the faces of the many clear before their eyes too.

“Come on, it’s my birthday. You have to do what I want. It’s like a rule.”

“What are you, ten?” Yoongi said with weak vexation. It was Namjoon’s 25th birthday and he wanted Yoongi to join him and Jin for dinner. “Fine, I’ll try and finish early.”

“Great! I’ll see you later, Gi!”

“Wait, I said I would try to-,” but before Yoongi could finish his sentence, Namjoon had hung up the phone. His best friend usually did that to Yoongi when he wanted the other to do as he said without room for dissent. Now, Yoongi would have to finish up his work on time, so he could have time to make it downtown to Namjoon’s favorite restaurant. It wasn’t that Yoongi avoided dinner with the two, but he did on occasion. And only two occasions: Namjoon’s and Seokjin’s birthdays. The two would act so lovey dovey and gross. And though he loved both of them like the brothers he never had, he still would rather not have to be around them as they cooed at each other twice as much as they did on a regular basis.

All throughout the work day, Yoongi received text messages from both the birthday boy and the birthday boy’s boyfriend.

It was impossible for Yoongi to forget with the two of them annoying him all day. He silenced his phone after the second message from Namjoon. And around four, he packed up his bag, locked his classroom, and headed home to get ready – he needed to still be alive to teach his twelfth graders government come Tuesday morning.

By 5:20 he was already in his car driving to Zhuque’s where his two friends would be waiting for him. He was thankful that he and Namjoon shared a deep love for Chinese food; at least he could look forward to delicious food as he third wheeled with the disgustingly sweet couple.

-

“Welcome to Zhuque, table for one?”

Yoongi heard the hostess greet him once he walked a couple meters inside the restaurant.

“No, actually I’m meeting someone. Under Namjoon? Uh, a table for three?” He stated as a question. He wasn’t sure if the reservation was under Namjoon or Jin’s name.

“Ah, Namjoon! It’s a table for four actually. Follow me please.” She clarified before leading the way with a confused Yoongi in tow.

Why would we need a table for four? He pondered for the 30 seconds it took to meet up with his friends at their table.

“You made it!” Jin happily cheered from his seat at the rectangular table. Namjoon quickly followed with a wave and an exclamation of ‘welcome, now you get to live another day! Life’s great!’

Yoongi still felt confused but managed to mumble out ‘mountain dew, please’ when the waiter stopped by to take his drink order. As soon as the guy was gone, Yoongi asked the question that was pestering the tip of his tongue,

“Are you waiting on someone else?” He narrowed his eyes at the couple as he continued, “The hostess mentioned this was a table for four, as in you guys asked for four seats for four people. What gives?”

“Oh, Jin wanted me to meet his cousin who just moved here a few weeks ago from…” He turned his attention to his boyfriend so he could finish the sentence with the information he lacked.

“Ah, uh, from LA. He moved up hear so he could attend university.”

“Why the hell would he move from LA to come here? Davis is tiny and way too chill. It’s like the cool kid’s nerdy little brother.” And it was true. Davis was a much smaller city than LA. Namjoon and Yoongi had both lived here their entire lives. The place was quiet and moderately populated. The school was great and huge, but the city was ordinary and homey. He’s never lived in LA, but the dozens of times he’s visited, it was Davis’ opposite.

“He’s attending the law school here. He started last month, but he made time so he could come meet Namjoon.” Mirth accompanied Jin’s response. Yoongi figured he must have really wanted his cousin to meet Namjoon. And as if the other read his mind, Jin continued, “He’s already met my parents and little sister, but Jimin and I are close. He’s like a little brother to me. We grew up together until I moved here senior year. Plus, you’re here too. My two favorite boys get to meet my other favorite boy!”

Yoongi nodded his head along while Jin explained the situation.

“See, Gi, life really is great!” He heard Namjoon reiterate the same thing he said earlier as he nonchalantly granted him life of another day in this world. At this, Yoongi rolled his eyes and took a sip of the soda that had arrived mid explanation.

“Oh, here.” Yoongi reached for the bag he had brought with him and handed it to Namjoon. “Happy birthday, kid.”

“I’m older than you by like half a year.” Namjoon said as he shook his head and smiled as he took the proffered bag from his best friend. “Thanks Yoongi.”

“No prob, old man. Is that better?” He heard Jin snicker and Namjoon mumble something about rude friends and it’s my birthday, you should be nice to the birthday boy.

After ten minutes of talking and munching on appetizers in the form of heavenly pork dumplings, he heard Jin practically squeal, “He’s here! I can see him!”

“Whoa, calm down, Jin. You’re so embarrassing.” Yoongi playfully chastised his friend as he felt the need to turn around even though he would not be able to see who it was anyway.

But then something unexpected happened. It was like his world suddenly shifted off its axis or something because he could see. He could see.

And he was looking at the most beautiful creature he had no idea even existed. As if the world conspired against him to hide this beautiful, godlike wonder just from him.

But that was wrong. No, this wondrous man was not created to be hidden from him. No, he was created for him, to be his perfect match, to be his soulmate, to be his.

There standing five meters before him was the one person in this world he was going to belong to and was going to belong to him.

He stood up so quickly he dropped the latter half of his soda all over the deep red tablecloth, but he was too focused to give it a second thought. He pushed out his chair with a purpose and walked over to the man that had given him proper vision in the longest strides his legs could manage.

He smiled that gummy smile of his that made him look like an idiotic child, but it was the smile that only presented itself when he was incredibly happy. He put out his pale hand in front of him and spoke, “Hello, I’m Yoongi.” And as he waited for the response he heard Jin gasp quite loudly and say ‘no way!’ But all that didn’t matter because the gorgeous man before him spoke with a light voice that felt like sweet songs playing right into his ears, completely mellifluous, “Hello, I’m Jimin” he heard the other say and then give the brightest smile of white teeth and perfectly stretched lips. It was the prettiest smile he had ever seen. He felt guilty for casting his parents’ smiles aside, but nothing could compare to the smile that was lighting up the dimly lit restaurant. And when he felt the warm hand of Jimin capture his own, it felt as if he was complete. A surge of warm tingles sent pleasant shivers throughout his entire body as if screaming this is it! This is him! Yoongi fought the urge to wrap his arms around Jimin and pull him close into his embrace, he didn’t want the other to be uncomfortable, but he was dying to feel the other press against him.

But his thoughts were interrupted when he heard someone approaching from behind him. He turned and met eyes with someone, and then he heard the familiar voice of Jin coming from said man. He let go of Jimin in favor of bringing his hands up to pull Jin into a hug.

“Jin!” He whispered into the other’s ear. “I finally get to see you!” Yoongi had recently began losing hope that he would ever get to see Jin, but now all those worries were being thrown aside. And as he looked over Jin’s shoulders he saw Namjoon standing at the table with a wide and dimpled smile. He quickly let go of Jin and nearly ran to the table, “Joon! I can see! I can see you and Jin and Jimin. God, did you see him?! He’s gorgeous!” He was practically drowning in happiness and surprise, but his world just changed into something completely miraculous, he was allotted one genuine freakout in his lifetime and this was the perfect occasion.

“I know, Gi! Isn’t the world wonderful?” He laughed as Yoongi pulled out of the hug to look him straight in the eyes,, “Yeah, life’s great.”

Five Years Later

“Ohmygod, Yoongi! They’re in the room right next to us! Get your hand out of there!”

Yoongi snickered as he continued peppering kisses along Jimin’s jaw. He slowly moved his warm lips slowly down Jimin’s neck with intent. “But my hands have a mind of their own.” He spoke between wet kisses. “I have no control over where they go or where they want to go.” A pretty red love bite was now present when he removed his busy mouth, “And right now it seems like they want to go down your sweats. I have no control over them, I swear.” He bit softly on a patch of skin and heard Jimin gasp and hitch his breath before gathering the sense to respond.

“Oh, I’m sure you don’t!” Jimin complained disbelievingly to his boyfriend that seemed to make it his mission to seduce him every chance he had alone with Jimin. Tonight’s occasion happened to be a trip to Nice the four men took to celebrate Namjoon’s 30th birthday, which also marked the anniversary of when they first met.

“Besides, I’m sure we’ll be hearing them soon enough, don’t you want to play the ‘who can be the loudest game’ with them?” He asked in feigned innocence as he licked deeply into his boyfriend’s left clavicle earning a low moan from said man underneath him. “I bet we would win.” He said right before he began nibbling on the bone covered by beautifully sun kissed skin, drawing out a slightly louder and needy groan from Jimin’s pink lips.

“That game doesn’t even exist!” He swallowed loudly before continuing, “Plus, I’d rather not hear them go at it. Gross.” Without hesitation he wrapped his fingers in Yoongi’s hair and began massaging his scalp.

“Great, I’ll be your distraction!” The words came out with much more happiness that was warranted, but that’s what Jimin did: he made Yoongi impossibly happy to the point where it was overtly saccharine and made Joon and Jin look appropriate. “I’ll make sure you can’t hear them. Hell, I’ll make sure you can’t hear anything but your pants and moans bouncing of the walls.” He chuckled lightly before the laugh thinned and his voice lowered, “You’re all I see. I see you, and I fall even more in love, you know that?”

Jimin stared down into Yoongi’s deep brown eyes and felt his face and body heating up at the attention and the weight of the sweet words pressing into his heart. “Quit sweet talking me; I’m already yours.” He turned his face so he wasn’t pushed further into his embarrassment. But Yoongi pulled his attention right back with a gentle grip on his chin and spoke airily as he looked into Jimin’s eyes, “Yes, you are mine, and I am yours. I love you, Park Jimin.” He reached up and placed his lips over Jimin’s in a chaste kiss.

He felt Jimin smile into the kiss and he couldn’t help but do the same. They were meant for each other, of that he was sure. Jimin completes him.

Before they could lose each other in the moment, shock covered their faces, but in a split second their expressions morphed into frowns.

“Fuck, right there Joonie! Ah, ah, ah—” Jin’s moans could be heard like little repulsive woodpeckers pecking at the wall.

“I think I’ll take you up on that offer now.” Jimin laughed as he threw his head against the pillow.

Yoongi took this as the go ahead and quickly pulled off his shirt and did the same to Jimin quicker than humanly possible. Firm hands caged Jimin’s ribs and a lascivious smile graced his lips before he lowered his face and let his warm breath hit Jimin’s ear,

“With pleasure, love.”
