Rain had always been impulsive. Everyone knew that. Noeul reminded him daily. Phukan, with his big eyes and soft voice, never said it out loud - but the way he wrung his hands when Rain did something “reckless” said enough.
But this wasn’t reckless. Not really. Not when their fridge had started to hum weirdly like it was protesting its job. Not when Phukan had quietly asked if they could skip ordering new paints this month because “he could still mix the leftovers.” And not when Rain caught Noeul staring at his phone at 3 a.m., comparing fabric costs with a look of sheer exhaustion in his eyes.
They wouldn’t accept his help if he offered directly. They were too prideful. Too stubborn.
