Peace of Mind

Summary:

Namjoon and Seokjin are married with a daughter. During a storm, little feet run into the safety blanket that is her Daddy.

Work Text:

Raindrops are falling hard against the third story window of Namjoon’s office. The news said there was going to be nasty rain and thunderstorms all day and night. It was ten after midnight and he should be heading home already. Seokjin doesn’t like him driving home in the dark; especially when the weather is bad, but he had the night shift at the hospital so there isn’t much either of them can do. So he grabs his briefcase and packs up before locking the door behind him.

“Have a goodnight, Dr. Kim. Drive safely.” The security guard tells him as he passes by him. Namjoon offers the older man a wave “You too, Mr. Williams. Don’t work too hard.”

He pops open his umbrella and practically runs to his truck as fast as he can without slipping in a puddle. The one time he came home after having slipped, Jin checked him all over for injuries and upon finding none, promptly laughed at him and asked all kinds of questions (does your rump hurt? Did anyone see you? Did you cry? Wanna tell me all about it, baby?). Namjoon blushed a decent shade of pink as he was forced to relive the incident that hurt his pride more than his butt. So quickly, yet carefully, he makes his way to his truck.

The streets are nearly empty. The last car he saw drove past him over five minutes ago. He’s been hitting green lights almost the whole way, and the drive is shorter than he thought it would be – even as he drives five miles under the speed limit.

He makes it home in a record twenty five minutes as he drives into the garage and checks the time. He locks his truck then the garage door behind him as he walks into the warm house. Making his way up to his bedroom, he is halfway up the stairs when he steps on a marker and nearly loses his footing, but manages to recover without dying or making any unnecessary noise.

He steps into the en suite bathroom and begins undressing; he removes all his clothes and steps into a cold pair of pajama bottoms and loose shirt. He palms the light and pads his bare feet over to the California King bed. The wood whines beneath his weight, but Jin’s soft snores continue to fill the room. Carefully lifting the blanket, he slips his body under and snuggles close to Jin, wrapping an arm around the other’s waist. As he is about to bury his face into his husband’s neck, he feels him stir and turn over so now they are chest to chest.

“You’re home?” He hears Seokjin ask in a voice laced with sleep and slight confusion. Namjoon fights the urge to coo and giggle softly; instead he settles for, “Yeah, I’m home baby. Sorry, for waking you.” And just as he finishes his sentence, a bright light of a beautiful purple lights the room for a split second before a loud boom of thunder enters the room. Jin uses the disturbance to bury his face against Namjoon’s chest and breathes in the scent of his husband.

Namjoon hears a muffled 'missed you' and feels the warmth from his husband’s breath tickle his collarbone. He then wraps his long arms around Jin and settles into their usual bedtime routine. After a few minutes another boom fills the silence, and thirty seconds later, something else fills the void. Little feet pounding against the wood boards can be heard making their way to their bedroom. And then a soft knock and turning of the doorknob before a cute voice makes itself known,

“Daddy?” The voice calls out into the darkness, and Namjoon turns his head to look in the direction of his door. It’s too dark to see anything, but of course Namjoon knows that voice better than his own.

“What is it, darling?” He calls to the girl standing in the doorway as he reaches to turn on the bedside lamp. Seokjin is oblivious to everything around him as he has already fallen back asleep.

“Can I sleep with you and Papa? I’m scared.” She whispers out as she tries not to wake up her sleeping Papa. Namjoon lifts the blanket away from his body and stretches out his arms to welcome his daughter into his warm embrace. Upon seeing the gesture, the girl uses her short legs to carry her into the safety of her daddy’s warm arms as fast as they can. The heavy rain hitting the window panes are the background music to her little feet that pound against the floor under her weight. As soon as she is close enough, he swoops down to the four year old to bring her to rest against his chest.

“Was my little Minyoungie scared because of the loud noise?” He asks into her dark chestnut colored hair – she nods her head in response and rests her cheek against her daddy’s strong shoulder. “It’s okay now, Daddy’s here. Let’s try to go to sleep.” He lays her down to rest between him and Seokjin so she feels protected in the barricade only her dads can create for her small body.

Namjoon watches as her eyes fall closed and a steady breathing passes continually from her small parted lips. Seokjin wraps an arm around her tiny waist as if he has sensed her presence and snuggles closer to form himself around her tiny body. A fond smile finds its way onto Namjoon’s face. This is what peace of mind must feel like. He thinks as he watches the two people he loves the most in the world rest right in front of him. The two bodies look serene and ethereal. He isn’t sure how he became so lucky, but his life could not get any better than it is at this very moment.

He reaches behind himself and turns off the lamp as he drapes his arm over the two bodies and falls asleep with a smile on his face.
