    Summary

You once read a story about a man who sought to trick the Oracle of Delphi. In his hands, hidden away in his sleeves, was a bird. He asked the Oracle if what was in his hands was alive or dead: if her answer was 'alive', he would wring the bird's neck. If 'dead', he would produce from his hands the bird alive. But the Oracle was one too many for him, for the answer he got was this: “Stranger, whether the thing that you hold in your hand be alive or dead is a matter that depends entirely on your own will.”

Such a situation you found yourself in. But you were not the Oracle or the man - you were the bird, and what happened to you was entirely dependent on their will.
