Work Text:
Sixteen-year-old Lily Evans was seated in the Great Hall with her current assignment driving her up the wall. Laying in front of the teenage enchantress laid a blank piece of parchment. She was supposed to compose a poem for Slughorn's Slug Club. He'd given them a relatively unusual task to complete. He wanted the members of the Slug Club to communicate their thoughts creatively. Therefore, he'd requested them to compose poetry.
The poetry itself could be about anything or done in any style. Slughorn had promised whoever wrote the best poem would earn a special prize. It seemed, however, that most young wizards and witches didn't possess the knack for words as they did for magic spells. Because glancing around, the other Club associates couldn't think about what to write.
She genuinely wanted to win the unknown prize, even if it was simply seeing the pride in Slughorn's eyes. But then, a bolt of inspiration hit the redhead as she rapidly began to write the poem that came to mind.
"This magic spell will never sever Lily and James together forever.
May our love reach to skies overhead and be true as the heavens are blue.
Let our passion grow each day so that it shall never rust away.
Nor sword or spell shall ravage the bells tolling on our wedding day.
Nothing will keep me away from you.
Neither fire nor the sea will keep me at bay.
I'll uncover a way to find you no matter how many days it takes.
If I was granted a single wish?
I'll ask was to be loved each morning and each night.
To be held in your arms and you tell me its alright.
Like the glistening morning dew.
I want to hear the words, "I love you!"
May we never part, not in life or death, but live forever in each other's hearts.
This is all I pray and wish for.
So say the magic words that my heart needs to hear.
I'll know you'll come running, my dear.
Please know I'll love you even more.
So let's sail to the distant shore and be together forevermore."
She beamed cheerfully at her composition. Confident she'd win whatever the secret prize was from Slughorn. The award turned out to be her poem was immortalized in his books of memories.
Even if it wasn't a magic elixir or breathtaking charm? Knowing he treasured it enough to keep it with him for all time? Well, that made her feel more then OK. She was thrilled with what she penned since it came straight from her heart. All she had to do was recite the poem to the one who inspired her to write it. So she left the Slug Club meeting to find James and genuinely hoped he felt the same!
