mariek, you asked for historical AU and book canon details, and brideshead revisited just popped into my head. every once in a while i lose my entire mind about the fact that queliot has its roots in a book from 1945, and i guess i was ready to dedicate two months of my life to that. this is a bunch of brideshead!queliot manips that are connected to instances in the books or on the show. it’s much bigger than i’d anticipated but not even comprehensive: it turns out there’s kind of a lot of connections. some of them accidental, probably, but incredibly rewarding to think about nonetheless. what really struck me on my re-read is that so much of that book and book!queliot’s time together is this languor of youth, while the show instead had their arcadia be domesticity, parenthood, middle and old age. that charles “lives for beauty,” that it’s an “aesthetic education to live within [brideshead’s] walls” while queliot has a shabby little cottage in their “always summer, always alone, the fruit always ripe” place (is this why the seasons never change in the mosaic montage?) (fun fact: in the 1981 miniseries sebastian is eating a peach when he says that line), where they lived for finding “the beauty of all life” which was not the art they were working on, but their love for each other and a life well-led.
anyway. mariek — your presence in this fandom is a joy, your gift us with so much detailed and lovely art. if you aren't familiar with brideshead revisited, think of this as an edwardian AU. i really hope you enjoy it either way!
thank you for jess for organizing this event and being a terrific mod, and shoutout to our little server for lasting a whole year! i love that we all came together to shape it and i appreciate all of you so much <3
