Work Text:
Kujou Sara walks as fast as she can, well, as fast and careful as she can amidst the heavy rain and strong winds. The umbrella she’s using was big enough to shield her from the full blast of the rain but it unfortunately did not protect her whenever a strong gust of wind hits her from the sides.
It was cold as hell, she grits her teeth and pushes through the near vacant street.
“Why the hell did I not think to wear a jacket?” she says, bringing up her unoccupied arm to warm herself up but alas, another gust of wind hits her and she shivers in the cold.
No matter, the convenience store is right up ahead of her. Sara hastens her pace all the while making sure that she won’t slip on the slippery asphalt road.
Damn it Yae , I hate that you’re so stubborn . She scoffs at the thought of her roommate, at how ridiculous that she got her to do an unimportant errand in the middle of a storm. The woman blames herself partially for it, Sara got hungry (but she didn’t want Yae Miko to know) and now she’s shivering in the cold, walking towards the nearest 7-Eleven convenience store to buy chocolates and sweets for her roommate.
She tries not to think about buying anything for herself too.
If she thinks the outside is cold, the inside of 7-Eleven is much worse.
She curses herself for her poor foresight. Not only did she not wear or think to bring a jacket, she’s just in a simple muscle tee and shorts.
“God, it’s freezing in here.” she mutters, slowly roaming through the different aisles.
There’s only a few people present in the store other than the usual employees working, bored expressions on their faces.
She reaches the chocolate aisle, carefully browsing through the items.
What brand did Yae Miko say she wanted?
“Need some help there?”
Sara squeaks in surprise, almost jumping out of her skin. She turns and finds a woman her age with a slight smirk on her lips.
“N-no! I’m fine,” she takes another look at the woman, “Wait, you don’t work here.”
“Gee, I wonder,” the other woman goes, “Was it my haggard self, or how I’m not wearing the store vest that clued you in?”
It was true, the other woman was not wearing the store’s uniform vest or any telltale sign of the store’s logo on her. In fact, she looked too haggard or weary to be even working at the store. The mess that is her unkempt yet still braided purple hair and white blouse. No, it was definitely not the tired look but the playful look on the beautiful woman’s face.
Still, it put a frown on her face.
“I’m sorry if that offended you, I was just surprised.” Sara says, brushing the back of her neck.
The woman waves away her apology, smiling mirthfully at her.
“I’m sorry, I just thought you needed help.” She explains, brushing her bangs behind her ear.
“I see…” Sara turns back to the items on the shelves, wondering what she should do. She never really did enjoy sweets, so she doesn’t know. Sara then looks back at the lady, standing there as if waiting for something to happen.
Oh, what the heck.
“Do you have any recommendations?”
“Huh?”
“Do you have any recommendations on what kind of chocolates I should buy?” Sara repeats, watching the other woman and stepping closer to the shorter woman. “My roommate made me go out to buy some but she never did ask for anything specific.”
“Oh,” the woman inspects her, eyes sizing her up from top to bottom. Suddenly Sara feels nervous and uncertain under her watchful gaze. She knew she should have worn something more appropriate.
“In this weather?” The shorter woman asks, confusion written on her face.
“What?”
“She made you go out to buy in this kind of weather?” She clarifies, pointedly looking at the bad weather outside, the heavy rain bouncing off the windows, and Sara remembers how soaked her umbrella was when she left it near the door upon entering.
“Well, she’s very stubborn at what she wants.”
“Sounds like a child, honestly.”
Sara chuckles at the thought. Yae Miko, an oversized kid? “You could say that.”
Sara’s still chuckling and she sees the woman grinning at her. Another moment of silence passes by before Sara remembers. “So, any chocolatey recs?”
The woman perks up, “Oh right!.”
She browses through the items on the chocolates’ aisle and picks up a pack of chocolate bars with the star logo on its cover and cheerfully hands it to the taller woman. “I don’t know about you but I always buy these when I’m in the mood.”
Sara reads it over and checks the price. She didn't bring much money, after all.
It’s good enough.
“Thanks.” Sara says, smiling at her.
Slight red blooms on the woman’s paler skin and Sara grins at the sight.
She’s cute.
“So.” Sara starts, unsure where or how to proceed.
“So?”
“So, what are you doing here?” Surely, the other person must be on an errand and Sara might have been distracting her.
Seemingly pulled out of her thoughts, radiant violet eyes meet Sara’s golden ones and she finds herself being studied under them; a thoughtful expression is on her face.
“You could say I’m also out to buy some sweets.” she answers, head turning away to look at a nearby aisle. “I needed some ice cream.”
Sara raises a curious brow. With the other lady’s overall state and the need for an obvious stress food, it must really have been something. “That bad, huh?”
She rolls her eyes, “Yeah sure, I went through a breakup.”
Sara blinks her eyes at her, “Really?” She eyes her, ”I don’t buy it.”
She sighs. "If a tub of ice cream is only acceptable after a breakup then yeah, let's say I just went through a breakup." The other woman shrugs, “Universal rule: tub of ice cream after a breakup.”
Sara watches as the purple haired woman walks off towards the store’s freezers for the aforementioned tub of ice cream and follows after her. She stops just beside the other woman as dainty hands just finished getting a tub of vanilla ice cream out of the freezer.
“Do you also want one?” Sara finds herself getting asked, a skeptic look on the other woman’s face. “I didn’t really expect you to follow me, so I thought-”
“No, I don’t really like sweets.” She replies, cutting through her words. Sara finds herself shyly grinning at the other woman. She looked a bit frazzled under her gaze for that short moment. “I just thought you needed help.”
“Wh- I’m sorry?”
“Breakups are tough,” Sara shrugs, looking at the bewildered woman in front of her, “No one should be alone during such a hard time.”
Another short moment of silence passes by with the shorter woman studying her, inspecting for any insincerity. Despite the situation, Sara finds her slowly smiling back at her.
“Do you normally pick up girls in a 7-Eleven?”
Sara shook her head. "Oh, no. But if most girls who come by here look like you, I definitely would consider it."
"I- what? You- I'm-" she shook her head, red blooming on the woman’s cheeks and Sara preens at the sight. "It's a 7-Eleven! Who doesn't come by here?"
She tsked. "Exactly, shame."
"Alright." the shorter woman said. She looked surprised at her answer but the fact that Sara momentarily surprised this surprising girl was incredibly satisfying.
"Really?"
"Really." She beams amusingly at her. "I honestly would've thought you were a buy-me-dinner-first kind of girl."
"Oh, I am." Sara smiles. "Have any plans?"
Yae Miko swings her head when she hears the door to their apartment swish open. She spots a seemingly content looking Sara holding the treasured bag of goods she had been craving for half an hour ago. Annoyed, she doesn’t wait for Sara to hand it to her, walking up close to get it herself.
“What took you so long?” She asks, a frown on her face.
Her roommate looked at her with a huge beam on her face and Miko finds herself more confused. She remembers her roommate leaving their place with complaints and a glare. Despite the soaked state of her friend from the storm still raging outside, she looks like she has hit jackpot.
Sara only ignored her, feeling her phone ping. A text from an unknown number.
'Would it be too sudden to ask for your name?'
