Work Text:
“You’ve got to be kidding me”
Gavin exclaims as two sets of steel blue puppy dog eyes looked at him. One is from his boyfriend NInes, sitting on their couch holding the pup in his hands, cooing and rubbing his nose on the top of its head, a small smile on his lips. While the other set of eyes were from the furriest pup he’s ever seen. Its fur was black and white, almost looking like he had a jacket similar to what Nines usually wears, with its tail wagging in excitement at the sight of him.
Gavin chuckled as he approached them, sitting beside the two and petting the pup, “I was just out for a few hours.”
"I found him as I was walking back home." Nines cooed as he scratched at a spot under the pup’s neck, "He was crying and I couldn’t bear to leave him there inside the box he was in.” NInes smiled up at him this time, “Besides we don't have pets at home so I thought it would be good to have him around, someone to welcome us home after a long day at work.” the android said softly as he rubbed his nose against the back of the pup’s neck, before pulling out the big guns with his puppy dog eyes, “Can we keep him?"
A pup and the dreaded RK Series puppy dog eyes. What a way to end a workweek. He's heard of it from Hank and Allen but he never thought the day would come that he would have firsthand experience.
There was no immunity to it. No one was safe from it, not even Captain Fowler. A fact Gavin found hilarious but never in his life has he entertained the thought that he'd be the recipient of one. Because despite his prickly personality to the rest of the people at the DPD, he was anything but that when it comes to Nines.
In the comfort and privacy of their home, he's the most soft-hearted and lovable person to his beloved. He was Nines’ to hold and keep, mind, body, heart, and soul. It even surprised him that he had this side to his personality that he himself never knew until he found himself hopelessly and irrevocably in love with his partner.
But now, Nines, who had never really asked for anything except to love him as much as he loves him, is now asking in the most underhanded way. Which he didn’t need to do since Gavin was willing to give him the world if he even so much as asked for it.
Gavin ran a hand down his face. He's never had a pet before, a dog, a cat, a hamster, nothing. He wasn't confident nor responsible enough to raise another living being besides himself. But a pup? That’s a very big responsibility.
Nines continued to look at him with those eyes, his bottom lip slowly but surely forming a pout. Gavin clicked his tongue and turn his head away, a blush on his cheeks. How can he ever resist Nines when he’s giving him that look?
He doesn’t think he’s ready for this. Nines stood up and lifted the pup to Gavin’s eye level, “Don’t you find him cute?” he said so adorably that Gavin was screaming internally at how adorable his boyfriend is acting right now. The pup whined for added effect, a thing that Gavin automatically noted down.
And so with a long-suffering sigh, Gavin nodded, reaching up to put a hand on Nines cheek. “You know I would do anything for you right?” he smirked, making Nines’ eyes widen before it softened, leaning closer to nuzzle and kiss Gavin’s temple.
“Thank you. I knew you’d agree.”
Gavin pulled away slightly, blinking up at his partner, “You already–”
Nines grinned at him mischievously.
He was completely outplayed. Nines already knew that he would say yes?!
“Oh you little–”
NInes leaned in to give him a chaste kiss on the lips to silence Gavin’s retort, pulling away to give him a teasing smirk “You know that I love you right?”
“Not when you do me dirty like this Nines.” Gavin smirked, “I’m going to get what is due to me one of these days. But for now” He put a hand on Nines’ nape pulling him, “I love you most, and don’t you dare forget it.” he whispered, a few millimeters away from Nines lips.
Nines giggled a tilting, playful sound that made the butterflies in Gavin’s stomach flutter, tickling him all over. Whipped, he was totally whipped. It was an accurate word to describe him, a word Tina would often tease him with when Gavin gazes too long at his boyfriend when he should be working.
The pup yapped between them, seemingly wanting to be involved in the conversation. Looking closely…it really does resemble Nines, especially with those blue eyes. He just hopes that he wouldn’t be completely at this pup’s mercy.
Gavin had never been so wrong.
After their initial ‘meeting’ with Zeus the pup, he spent time researching on how to take care of puppies and even asked Hank for tips. At first, he was well behaved, and it reminded him so much of Nines. Zeus was like how the android was, when he ould wait excitedly for him at his desk during the mornings, a cup of coffee in hand and a small smile that could light up the room if anybody had a chance to look closer. It was when they were getting closer and friendlier. The time before Gavin clumsily blurted out his feelings.
He slowly but surely found the allure and the sheer joy of taking care of a puppy. But as the days pass just like how Gavin discovered more about Nines and his loveable quirks, the pup eventually revealed its true personality.
Zeus the pup, was the most demanding puppy Gavin had the fortune of meeting.
Zeus doesn’t want to be left alone in the room or else he cries up a storm. He gobbles up his food like he doesn’t get fed at all, that he became so round and full that he couldn’t move. Despite getting rounder Zeus still has room for treats that Nines generously gives. But the one Gavin watches out the most is Zeus bites on everything, the furniture, their shoes, and one time when Gavin was playing with him, his finger.
“Is this all normal?!”
“He’s only two months old according to the vet, he’s still young and we can teach her a few things.” Nines giggled, rubbing Zeus belly, his tongue lolling out in glee, while Gavin crosses his arms. Even as he worries about disciplining Zeus, the soft, happy smile on Nines was above everything else. Subtly he took a picture of the two of them, saving it for later.
Though Gavin does find Zeus, completely loveable and adorable, there was a glaring issue. Gavin provides the food and all the things the pup plays with but Zeus tends to behave with Nines but with him? He was the most unscrupulous and playful boy in the world.
One day, Gavin was about to go out when he found his running shoes all chewed up, while the rest, which were all Nines shoes, were all fine. As he whirled towards the pup, Zeus looked up at him innocently, as he chewed at the shoelaces. “Now look here mister, we are going to have a talk.” Gavin picked the pup up with one hand, with Nines poking his head out of the kitchen to see what was going on.
Gavin put him beside him on the couch, booping the pup’s nose. “I’m the man of this house and my rules go. You got that?” Gavin said only to be answered by multiple licks on his hand. “Oh no, you are not going to have your way this time.” He picks up Zeus and carries him to his pen rightly fully called Puppy Jail. “Now think about what you’ve done.”
Zeus whimpered looking up at him, making Gavin’s eyes widen. “Nope, I’m not having it.”
The pup lowered itself and woefully stared up at him. “YIp!”
“Nope,” Gavin crossed his arms, narrowing his eyes at Zeus, “You are not going to capture me with that!”
Nines smiled watching as he leaned on the counter to watch the drama unfold. Gavin confessed that he wasn’t good with animals and yet here he was. The android kept recording the scene as Gavin tried to fight the urge to spoil Zeus as he already had.
Eventually, Zeus won and Gavin took him out of Puppy Jail, laying the pup against his chest and framing its little face in his hands, “This is only one time that I’ll let you win, boy”
The pup yipped at him again, placing his paws on Gavin’s chest, and standing keeping him down. Gavin kissed Zeus on the forehead, laying himself down on the couch, “Well that’s one way of keeping me at home, huh.”
NInes sputtered out a laugh and walked over to them, giving Gavin a kiss on the forehead. “Should I start keeping score?”
“Don’t you fuckin' dare!”
