There was not a sound that disturbed the silence, no animal brave enough to navigate the mist that caressed the forest floor and towered over the tree tops. Only contracted beings dared to venture inside the forest that had killed many even without the fog that did not use to be there before, knowing their contractors would not allow them to get lost in the forest that hummed with power. Power that responded to only one person who could command both the trees and the mist at will on a level that had not been witnessed since the ancestors.

Summary
Viserys is gone. Whatever dreams he might have had for Rhaenyra’s future died with him and his death left her defenseless—desolate. Daemon is now the head of the Valyrian Mob, occupying the throne that once belonged to her father.
And Rhaenyra? She’s nobody.
She’s just another girl in a city with a population of eight million people.
Rhaenyra would readily abandon her birthright and renounce her claim to the throne of the Valyrian Mob, the organization founded by her ancestors. After her father’s untimely death, she tries to do just that, given it’s the only way to stay alive. She isn’t in a position to rule, lacking the experience and resources needed to face challengers and otherwise succeed in a cutthroat world. Unfortunately, her abdication isn’t enough to satisfy Daemon, who has his own plans in mind for her future.

When Rhaenyra was a little girl, her uncle Daemon was the best at taking care of her when she was sick. He read her stories, hoping to distract her from her symptoms while her cough medicine took effect. He made her soup and brought her tea and ginger ale and let her sleep in his big bed, while he slept on the couch. He tucked her in, and promised she would feel better in the morning. And she always did.
