Summary
As the third-in-line to the throne, Frerin never has a great deal of responsibility. It seems that any sort of ruling he might have to do is decades away. But when Smaug attacks Erebor, Frerin finds himself deep within the mountain with no way of escape. Accompanied by a few lucky survivors, he must take up the role of leadership and learn how to keep his people alive in the bowels of the Lonely Mountain - and hopefully, find a way to escape. Trouble, however, comes not just from their reptilian neighbor and the dangers of uncharted caverns, but from within the group itself, as concerns arise questioning a fifteen-year-old prince's ability to lead the last of the Dwarves of Erebor.

Bilbo hadn't exactly meant this when he'd said that to Gandalf as they boarded the ship.
No, he had definitely not wanted to restart his life from just before it was overturned by dwarves, elves, dragons, skinchangers, and oh, let's not forget dragons and gold-sickness. And that Valar forsaken Ring. This was most definitely not what he had imagined.
And yet, that was exactly what was happening. And he supposed, if it would just let him save his King and said King's nephews, as well as destroy the Ring before Frodo ever had a chance to be burdened with it - then maybe, just maybe, though it wasn't what he had imagined, it was exactly what he needed.Basically a Bilbo-fixes-everything fic, because reasons. It won't be without its bumps in the road, though.
