Summary

Like the rest of his gang, Lupin had a strange relationship with death. Jigen regarded the reaper as an old friend to embrace when the time came. For Goemon it was the goal of all his training. Fujiko pretended to avoid it like the plague while in actuality chasing the thrill. And Zenigata saw it as nothing but another obstacle in his pursuit of Lupin.
For a master thief the occasional brush with death is just another occupational hazard.

Metal Sonic strained at the wires that held him down, a heavy bound set him splayed open on a throwaway operating table. He doesn’t remember how he got here, why he’s here. Didn’t help that his visual optics were partially destroyed, the blindness fully restricted any recognition of where he was.
Iron claws stretched and retracted back into a fist furiously. Only just before this he was… what was it again? Chaos, his system memory was failing him. Why can’t he remember…?
Sonic. It was him, Metal was fighting Sonic. As usual, he was fulfilling his creation’s purpose.
Or, Metal Sonic nearly gets destroyed because of Sonic, and the feeling of failure and all that comes with it hits Metal at full force.

He doesn’t get to die, he thinks, nearly reduced to tears as he stares at the blue sky and tries to remember how to breathe.
This is atonement. He doesn’t get to get away from his pain this easily.

Summary
Maria doesn’t mind Shadow being quiet.
When people talk, he looks up: at faces, at indicators of a command, a direction, guidance. He waits to be told what to do. Run on the treadmill; give a blood sample, squeeze the dynamometer; do a spinal tap. He’s got a voice, a memory lauded with languages, all the means and reasons to ask the what and the why.
They drain him, the researchers; yet, he doesn’t ask what for. Maybe somebody’s already told him. Or he overheard his purpose. He’s alive so she can stop dying too early, and that’s enough for a purpose for him, so he does as he’s told.
She tries to give him opportunities to just be her little brother, just do fun things with her, things that don’t hurt him. He’s always clueless what to do then. Mobian hedgehogs are a social species, much in the same way humans are. Shadow’s not very social.
She knows there’s a lot in his head that he won’t or can't say. It’s just how he is. She’s fine with that.

It is a little jarring, when that corruption finally leaves him. He’s not sure what truly does the trick, maybe that last little push from Sage, or just some little parting gift from what remains of the Ancients. Sonic isn’t sure. Whatever the case may be, his body cannot decide if he should cry, or pass out.
The same must be true for the rest of his friends, because as he casts a weary glance over them all, they look equally as strained. But Chaos, it is good to see them whole, well and truly whole. Though unscathed might not be an accurate term, for any of them.
