“What is this?” Wolfwood asks.
“Black?”
“Yeah.”
Vash lets out a little breath. “Oh. It means I’m dying.”
Wolfwood jolts. He digs his fingers into the dark hair, tips back Vash’s head so their eyes meet.
“What?”
Vash smiles at him. “It means I’m dying. Slowly. But–surely.”
“What do you mean, Vash?”
“I’m a Plant, Wolfwood. I don’t have infallible energy, just like my sisters. Every time I use the arm it pulls on reserves."
...“Aren’t you scared?” Wolfwood asks. “Doesn’t it scare you?”
“No,” Vash says. “It doesn’t.”
Wolfwood leans down. He kisses that black streak and the black hair below it that until now was so innocent. Vash leans into it, hums in the back of his throat.
“Wolfwood,” he sighs, and sighs, and makes Wolfwood ache inside. “Don’t worry about it.”
“All I do is worry about you,” Wolfwood mutters. “Got you burrowed in my brain.”
And ribs and marrow, and bitten around his heart chewing into its vulnerable core.

“You’re right,” Wolfwood concedes reluctantly, “least we ain’t sick. God damnit.” He claps his hand over his eyes. “Just, don’t—I can’t—you can’t count on me to carry us through this. I’m not—” His lower lip wobbles, and he swallows, hard. “I’m no good with babies.”
Vash is silent after that. Wolfwood doesn’t dare to open his eyes and try and gauge his expression. It’s not like Vash is perfectly intuitive all the time, but he has his moments, and sometimes it feels like he can cut through Wolfwood with a single glance. It’s a quality that Wolfwood has admired in him, from time to time, but right now, he’s not sure he could take it.
“...Should we take her back?” Vash whispers. “If you really think we should—”
“No,” Wolfwood cuts him off, probably too loud, “I said no.”

A newly orphaned baby ends up, temporarily, falling into Vash and Wolfwood's care.

Summary
“Like anyone’s stopping you?” Wolfwood’s eyes roll; Vash is enthralled by the simple motion, the full expanse of his deep brown irises visible with his sunglasses folded on the bedside table. They cuddle like this often, these days, so it’s not like Wolfwood’s eye colour is new to him, but even in their more easy life, Wolfwood doesn’t like to go without them. They do live on a desert planet, after all. Beyond that, it’s vulnerable in a way that Vash would have to actively pretend not to understand, hence why he doesn’t usually push Wolfwood to take them off.
This isn’t the sort of moment that Wolfwood has to hide from, though, and Vash is close enough that all he has to do is lean in a little closer, press the tips of their noses together, and watch the way Wolfwood’s pupils shrink into pinpricks in his embarrassment, giving Vash an even better sight of that pretty brown.
“You,” Wolfwood says, and he whiffles, as if he’d been caught off guard by Vash’s proximity, “you like that about me, anyhow.” He clears his throat.
“That you’re mean to me?” Vash clarifies.
