Not that this was a new revelation for Michael, after all, he had been staring at it for the better part of ten minutes already (maybe longer than ten, he was never the best judge of time, and right now he really wasn’t to be trusted with it). Blinking slowly at the still whirling fan, the teenager turned his head, hair rubbing awkwardly on the tiles as he swallowed, mouth dry. God, it felt like there was glue caked to the roof of his mouth: when was the last time he drank something?

The whispering had stopped some time ago. It seemed that everyone ended up with the same thought: that there's no use in making a plan against a guy with a gun. Those who didn't care or simply gave up were possibly asleep, the rest were probably sitting alone, knees draw to their chests while hoping the next person to open the door will have a bullet proof vest. Or they were like Calum, leaning onto the side of someone who only hours ago were a stranger and now felt more like a friend than most people they've known since childhood.

“Okay, we get the Exy obsession, because you’re legitimately planning on going pro, and we get the Kevin obsession because he’s dedicated to teaching you to go pro, and we even get the Minyard obsession,” Dan says.
“Shh,” Neil pleads desperately, hoping beyond hope that nobody heard that.
“But the podcast has nothing to do with Exy! It’s half about music, and you don’t even like music that much,” Dan says. “It’s literally just music and a really weird guy talking about his homicidal impulses, and it sorta sounds like a joke, but on a much more real level it sounds like it’s absolutely not a joke and I would call the authorities if this guy gave any personal details at all,” Dan says.
“It’s mostly a joke,” Neil offers, but it sounds weak to his own ears.

“Neil knows what I want,” Andrew snaps. This is not Andrew’s fault.
“How do you know?”
Because Neil always knows. He is as fluent in Andrew’s micro-expressions as he is in German and French. He knows which head tilts mean “go on” and which ones mean “shut up.” Without ever asking, he learned what it meant to see Andrew wearing double layers of long sleeves, or taking multiple showers in a day, and learned to hand Andrew the car keys.
That has always been the most terrifying thing about Neil — his patience to wait, watch, listen, learn. The prospect that if Neil were given enough time, there would be no part of Andrew that was just Andrew’s anymore.
“He has to know,” Andrew says.
“Does he?” Renee says. “Have you ever known Neil to assume that he is wanted?”
Five times Neil tells someone that he and Andrew aren’t dating, and one time Andrew uses his words to set the record straight.
