Criminally unfinished but worth the read all the same—I spent an entire afternoon utterly engrossed in this fic from start to finish. Phenomenal writing; heartbreaking portrayal of the relationship between Vegeta and Freeza; excellent Freeza Force worldbuilding; a torturous slow burn between Vegeta and Bulma with Vegeta catching feelings first!

Beautifully written, in-character exploration of the factors that led to Bulla being conceived. I love this author’s take—I completely agree that Bulla was planned and that Vegeta is the one who initiated the idea of having another child. The dialogue and emotions in this piece are a joy to read.

Bulma took pity on the photographer and glanced sideways at the Prince. “Would it kill you to smile?” she said pointedly, her voice barely above a whisper so the other guests wouldn’t hear.
Vegeta didn’t respond, his expression remaining stony. He stood there with his arms crossed, projecting an aura of defiance and disinterest.
Bulma kept her smile plastered on her face, though her patience was wearing thin. “You know,” she muttered under her breath, “since it’s your fault we have to be here in the first place, you could at least cooperate.”
Vegeta’s eyes flicked to hers, a spark of irritation evident. His voice was low and cold. “I see your mate is absent from yet another event.”-----------
In an alternate universe where Goku never came to Earth, Bulma Briefs finds herself at the center of a precarious alliance between Earth and the Saiyan Empire. Prince Vegeta, determined to prevent the rise of another tyrant like Frieza, seeks to form strategic partnerships with advanced civilizations, including Earth. However, Bulma harbors deep distrust toward the Saiyans and their motives. Can they overcome their differences and learn to work together?

I love, love, love Niteryde’s works—her portrayal of Vegeta and his past feels the most realistic and canon-compliant to me. “Shades of Gray” is the perfect blend of heartbreaking insight into Vegeta’s time with Freeza, a window into Gohan’s emotions after the Cell Games, a great analysis of the relationship between Vegeta and Gohan, and of course some lovely Vegebul to tie it all together. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve read and re-read this fic over the years. It’s like comfort food to me. A classic and a must-read!
