Summary
“…I’m right,” Shirahama says, with budding glee. “You’re mad I’m right!”
Sasaki is mad, but not because he’s right. He’s mad because a week after his twentieth birthday, Shirahama is trying to scam alcohol off of him with his stupid face, and Sasaki kind of likes him anyway. This is the trouble with people’s affections. His sister had refused to let him pass his birthday in peace, so she’d gotten their parents to bake a triple-tier cake even though it was just the four of them celebrating, and she’d also bought copious amounts of alcohol. A week later, the leftovers of both were still in the fridge, and Shirahama had locked onto them like they were his newest dating sim target.
The cake, Sasaki had cut him a generous slice of. The alcohol, he was being unbearably stingy about—Shirahama’s words, not his.

Summary
A few seconds later the door to their shared bedroom swings open. Tashiro looks up to see Hanzawa—glasses off, socks still on, breathing hard and shaken—and sets his phone aside. The man before him is wound tight like a coil, but instead of snapping forward, potential energy converted into kinetic, he lowers himself onto the bed, sinking into the mattress like he’s featherlight. This is the way it is: Hanzawa Masato moves; Tashiro’s eyes follow.
But this Hanzawa doesn’t wait. He leans in with uncanny desperation, tucks himself into the crook of Tashiro’s neck, and only when his face is obscured as such does he say, “You should touch me.”

Summary
Work, ritualized, was the core of Suo Hayato’s discipline, and in his practice of it, he extended that ideology to every movement. And so, though Furin was in an anticipatory period of fighting focus, his training sessions with Nirei Akihiko remained unchanged.

Summary
Ichinose Ao does not exist within the files of Boys’ Life Romance!. He’s not on the cover art, or in the manual, or in the background, because Boys’ Life Romance! is a dating sim, and it’s one that finds itself hard-pressed to care about anyone except its romanceable leads. The game’s CGs are drawn in stunning definition, but background characters are reduced to faceless bodies with similar hairstyles. Even Kuresawa’s girlfriend isn’t spared—he describes her smile, and the way her eyes curve, but the game leaves those details in shadow.
The “Life” in Boys’ Life Romance! applied not to a sense of realism, but rather the game’s timeline, which spanned two fictional years and filled those days with plenty of content. The main romance routes only began in earnest in the protagonist’s second year, so by virtue of their graduation, third years were locked from interaction, and thus locked out of romance.
Ichinose Ao, for all intents and purposes, is a nobody.

Summary
This is why. Tashiro wasn’t stupid: he’d wondered, “Don't you have, like, a million girls you could ask?” and Hanzawa had told him, “I can’t subject them to this,” which was true but not true enough.
He drops his hand from chin to neck. Tashiro doesn’t flinch but the skin is warm to the touch and his throat hums under Hanzawa’s palm. Valiantly, he aims for clinical assessment, and says, “Your Adam’s apple isn’t that prominent.”

Summary
Hanzawa Masato can’t know how this ends, but he knows how it started—high school, second year, freshly seventeen and adjudicating the results of a fixed game, knowing that the kid with gold-shocked hair is going to stay in the ping pong club, but not knowing why—
—and now that boy is here: Tashiro Gonzaburou, eighteen, blurred and bright, like he’s become light itself, voice cutting through the pounding of his heart: “RUN!”

Summary
“So,” I said, “that was—okay?”
Richard remained silent, blue eyes unreadable and glittering—like they’d been iced over. I fought the urge to start fidgeting with my suit lapels again. Was this an actual evaluation of my performance, or punishment for making him worry?
If that was the case, I certainly deserved it. Thinking about that man—my biological father—was still enough to set my nerves on edge, and the upcoming civil service exams had only exacerbated the issue. To my beautiful boss’s credit, he’d endured days of interview-related chatter before he’d snapped and asked if I meant to interview under him, since I couldn’t seem to talk about anything else.

Summary
Sasaki isn’t sure how to handle him, here. Miyano’s friend is tall—almost Sasaki’s height—but gangly, with limbs graceless enough to conjure up memories of middle school growing pains and botched dye jobs. He wavers at the entrance like a legless deer, his presence weighty enough to tell Sasaki he should be doing something, but too frightened to communicate what.

Summary
I decided to venture a question. “Richard,” I said, grateful for the relative privacy of our compartment, “are you still awake?”
For a time the thrum of the train continued, uninterrupted. I leaned back into my seat and let out a noisy exhale, hoping that I, too, could fall asleep.
All of a sudden, Richard’s lips parted, and I froze. “Seigi,” he sighed, “what is the matter with you?”

“Cousin, how goes it?” Illario greeted, a note too chipper. “You look well.”
Lucanis looked like a man who had been bound to a demon in an underwater prison and escaped in a frantic rampage. He looked like a man who had not slept in some days, and like one who was on the verge of rampaging again. Put simply, he did not look well.
“You’re not funny,” he said with a sigh, settling into his chair.

In junior high, Ichinose Ao does two things of note: he thinks about a boy for too long, and he sinks way too many hours into a video game.
Because it's middle school, both will haunt him for the rest of his life.

“A year and some months older,” Laxus flippantly confirmed.
If he was counting the months, she bet Freed was closer to two years older than one. “Really?”
“You didn’t know?”
Evergreen shook her head. “You know, he looks all”—she waved her hands in an ambiguous gesture—“waifish, or whatever. I never woulda guessed.”
Laxus’s expression darkened in an instant. “Wife-ish?” he asked, threat laced deeply in his voice.

Summary
Later that night, controller held lazily in his hand, Tashiro asks, “Don’t you get eye strain?” He clicks through some dialogue and clarifies, “From gaming in the dark.”
“Nope,” Shirahama replies. “I have perfect vision. 20/20 and everything.”
Tashiro doesn’t need glasses, which is probably why he doesn’t react to this statement with the appropriate level of awe. Instead he flicks through the dialogue choices, and picks the blatantly terrible option (“Who are you, again?”).
Shirahama wrestles with him for the controller. (“It’s glaringly obvious!” he squawks, trying to bat Tashiro’s hands to the side. “It’s so in your face, you should get blinded by it!”)

...Is something wrong, Seigi?
There he was, worrying about me again. It was part of the reason I was at this kind of hotel in the first place. Though we'd agreed it would be best to stay away from my apartment for a bit, we'd differed on how. I put up a fight, but against the weight of Richard's blue, watery eyes, I'd relented.
“Not what you're thinking of,” I reassured.
Then what is it?

Summary
“Why are you here,” Todoroki said, still feeling like he was half-dreaming.
Maybe it was out of consideration for the people on his floor that Bakugou was so quiet. He simply pointed upwards at the ceiling and asked, “You coming?”
As if he’d managed to read something in Todoroki’s dead eyes. Like he’d known he didn’t want to be alone. It wasn’t strange to think of Bakugou as considerate—on some level he’d always been aware—but he'd never been so bluntly faced with it. The offer was gentle and unavoidable.
Todoroki followed him up.

Summary
As he's about to slip in and shut the door behind him, a rustle sounds from one of the beds. The breath leaves Shirahama's chest, and he watches as Miyano's boyfriend—Sasaki, that was his name—emerges from the curtains, hair wild in a way that reads more like “bedhead” than “artfully tousled”—not that he'd say it was ever artful, but he's got no place to be critiquing Miyano's boyfriend's hairstyle…
—and speaking of. Sasaki’s staring at him. He sure is tall—for a moment Shirahama wonders why he'd never played basketball, but it’s the kind of wonder that’s paired with utter relief at the nonexistent situation. Then he feels very strange about that thought until Sasaki, with the sedate aura of someone who’s just woken up, blinks at him as if to communicate something. Shirahama stares back, caught like a deer in headlights.

Summary
Hanzawa-senpai didn’t seem fazed at all by what I’d just said, but he was an annoying guy who looked the same whether he was angry or not. “You’ve seen me wear them before, though?”
“Not in school,” I pointed out. Hanzawa-senpai had been a terrible sadist of a president, but he was squeaky-clean about the way he did it. Even now, with his earrings clearly visible, he was the perfect picture of a model student working in quiet concentration.
Hanzawa-senpai hummed in thought, his hands rummaging through the bag of makeup products he’d left on a nearby desk. “Well, I’m not a student anymore,” he said with a shrug. “Even so, aren’t they fairly hidden?”
As if—they were small, and a plain steel color, but it was Hanzawa-senpai. Of course I couldn’t stop staring.
