Summary
Solara’s curiosity was something nurtured with great care when she lived in Skyhold. Dorian’s lessons, Sera’s schemes, Blackwall’s excursions, Varric’s tales, Cole’s whimsy, Harding’s wanderlust… everyone played a role in what culminated into the young woman standing before the Grey Warden. She held the hurt of a millennia of tormented elves in her bones, the blood of a rebel god in her veins, and an entire Inquisition’s greatest joys and sorrows in her heart.
This is the prequel to my Rook/Lucanis Dragon Age the Veilguard fanfic! The dates have been changed to account for Rook's age, so the timeline looks like this:
- Inquisition: 9:41
- Trespasser: 9:43
- Veilguard: ~9:69-70
Two Rooks and a King is a series co-created by two friends who played Veilguard side by side in a Discord voice chat and thought, "Okay but what if there were TWO Rooks, and they were SISTERS?"
Smut chapters will be marked with an asterisk*, and content warnings will be noted in the beginning notes when needed.

Summary
Someone else might have looked on the decisions of their younger self with fond indulgence, but Ceridwen's indulgence had simmered away along with her love and her patience. The residue curdled into viscous spite and poison longing that dripped from her heart and pooled in every footstep on her path from Lucanis.
Or: years post Veilguard, Rook is a thorn in the Crows' side, and Lucanis is still in love.

"Cousin," Illario tried again and Lucanis could hear the tinge of desperation, "please. Help me." The plea hung heavy in the air between them like a storm brewing and if it had been anyone else from House Dellamorte, Lucanis would've sent them away. His hands were clean— Lucanis couldn't remember the last time he had dirtied them and he would be damned if he allowed himself to be sucked back in again.

Summary
The team learns about the first time Rook won the annual Crow Trial.
(The Purple Haze adult arc puts it all out on the table.)
’Assassination games?'
For a moment, the other Crow looks as baffled as she. But as horrified realization dawns on his face (his expression falls, twists — her stomach goes with it), Rook finds herself dreading his explanation.
(It must have been some protective mechanism in her brain which kept her from realizing, because when Lucanis translates, scowling, it’s obvious.)
“The annual Crow Trials.”
All trace of her good mood disappears. Il dio mio — Anything but the fucking Trials…

Summary
To become a Crow of House de Riva, first you must suffer. To become its Talon, first you must sacrifice.
In 9:35 Dragon, the young Viago de Riva is assigned a small, orphaned elf as an apprentice. By 9:48, they will, together, command their entire House. By 9:52, they will be Treviso's last line of defence during the Sixth Blight.
(an exploration of training & life under the Crows, Antiva during the Dragon Age, and alternate universe where my Rook, Brynnor de Riva, doesn't become Rook. The rest of the story falls into very different places after that.)

Summary
Caterina has no patience for politics, feelings, or the mess that happens when the two collide. So when she’s ordered to assassinate someone she barely knows, she expects a clean job and a quick exit.
Forced to work with the man she was sent to kill, Caterina clings to her unattached approach, even as Javier’s calm steadiness and relentless flirtation act as a soft edge to her sharper instincts—pulling her, inch by unwilling inch, toward a trust she never meant to give.

She was bought to be a weapon.
She became something far more dangerous.
Alunea remembers fire, chains, and nothing else. Raised by Viago de Riva inside the ruthless world of the Antivan Crows, she survives trials meant to kill, learns poison like language, and earns a new name, Rook.
Lucanis Dellamorte remembers the first time he saw her green eyes.
He tells himself she’s competition.
A copy. A threat. But missions blur lines. Rivalry turns sharp. Glances linger too long. And beneath their deadly precision lies a truth neither Crow was trained to handle:
They care.
While politics tighten around House de Riva and Rook’s buried magic begins to break free, the two assassins must decide whether they are weapons…
or something still human.

Summary
She and Viago are also both considered something of a problem for their superiors, Teia has noticed.
Teia doesn’t mind so much. She actually quite likes problems. She’s following Viago’s moves with keen interest.
With all that watching she has come to know him in a way, even though they have barely spoken to each other. So perhaps most important of all Teia knows that Viago de Riva is not a cruel man.
