Tying themselves down to the mast’s central lifelines when they scoured the nests above, lest they be blown into the unforgiving current below. It was like the droning of artillery fire, thunderous booms that crackled and echoed across the sky, thrashes of lightning that struck the waters and set the surface alight. The sight was almost wondrous, but the underlying reality of the situation made the crew grow weary.
They had three days left in the journey, and the South Sea was just as unforgiving as her sisters.

Daryl paused what he was doing, the signature orange rag, stained and worn out, clenched in his hand. He sighed, carefully maneuvering the weapon from his lap to the floor, propped up against the leg of the end table. He threw the rag over it, sitting up and turning a bit to face Carl.
“Shoot.” He said, instead of answering the question.
“Daryl.” Carl deadpanned, brows furrowing. “I’m serious.”

It’d been so long since he’d talked to anyone that wasn’t responding to the mindless babble of his baby sister, Carl was having a hard time processing anything.
“I just want to see my dad.” Carl said, trying not to let her spill a drop of food. She was pretty hungry, with the way she was wolfing it down. He readjusted her so she wouldn’t accidentally choke, and kept on.
“How long have you been separated?” Aaron asked, then grimaced to himself. “You don’t have to answer or tell me anything if you don’t want to- don’t ever feel pressured.” He explained quickly after, waving a hand. “I’m sorry, sometimes I get ahead of myself.”
