She huffed a laugh, brittle, thin, stripped of anything resembling humor.
“You know Jasper's not what I’m afraid of.”
Edward blinked at her, thrown and confused. “It’s not? Then what - ?"
Bella exhaled slowly, trying to ignore the throbbing around the edges of her chest. When she spoke again, her voice was flat and distant, almost dead, her learned and familiar survival reflex snapping into place.
“Actually, next time he snaps at me, I hope he does kill me,” she murmured ruefully. “Because that will be much easier compared to when you leave again.”
