Summary
It’s over. It had taken a while, but it’s over. The police had found Mackenzie, and both he and Aaron are recovering in hospital. They’ve still got a long road left to go, but they’re alive, which is the most important thing. No one really knew where John had gone off to, but with the amount of police presence in the village and the surrounding areas in the days after the whole thing went down, everyone assumed he had done a runner and was probably somewhere on the continent by now.
Typical, Robert thinks. John had always been a slimy one, just slippery enough to not get caught, so it doesn’t really surprise him that his brother had avoided police capture. But he comforts himself with the fact that he would never have to lay eyes on John ever again, and is perfectly fine with forgetting he’d ever existed to begin with. He already had a complicated relationship with one brother, he didn’t need another one.
After the gorge debacle, Robert is ready to move on from everything related to his so-called brother and pull the tatters of his life back together. Unfortunately, things have never been that simple.

Summary
The fact that they haven’t had sex in a while must be getting to Aaron’s head, because while this view of Robert would undoubtedly turn him on at any time, he’s driven to near insanity by the desire that wells up inside him. He has to have Robert now, or he’s going to lose his mind.

Summary
The first thing he sees when he lifts up the first piece of paper is his own name. Robert, written in Aaron’s handwriting. His heart rate instantly picks up, very confused over the fact that he seems to be holding a letter in his hand. Aaron wasn’t a letter person, and why he’d be writing to Robert, he can’t really wrap his head around.
He shouldn’t read it. While the letter may be addressed to him, it was never sent and is obviously hidden away at the bottom of a box in the corner of a cupboard, not meant to ever be read by anyone.
But Robert is only human.

Summary
They hadn’t talked a lot about Seb since getting back together. Aaron had tried asking Robert about him, if he wanted to make contact again, but Robert would quickly change the subject, seemingly not very keen on the thought at all. Aaron understood it to some degree, since Robert was still struggling with just getting through the day and the idea of bringing a kid into that must feel overwhelming.
But Aaron is practically aching with longing at this point. When he isn’t occupying himself with looking after Robert or working overtime to not let the guilt over everything to do with John consume him, all he thinks about is Seb. What Seb was like now, what he looks like, if he ever thinks about his Daddy Aaron and Daddy Robert. If he hates them. Hates him.

Summary
Vic keeps trying to tell herself that that’s all it is. That it’s all sex and nothing else, the two of them looking for any drop of comfort wherever they can, and some days it’s easy to believe. Some days, they have a quickie in one of the barns and go back to work as if nothing’s happened, their old dynamic firmly in place. But other days, Matty stays late into the night, and once he finally leaves, there’s a knot in Vic’s chest that won’t come undone for several days.

Summary
Aaron doesn't register the first symptom.
Or he does, but he doesn’t think much of it, his mind foggy with pleasure, his forehead pressed against the wall, nails scraping the raw timber. There’s just the slightest itchiness in the back of his throat, surely caused by the cold winter air and strained shouts Aaron has been trying to swallow down unsuccessfully, his voice echoing in a freezing space of the barn.aka
It's 2015. Katie is alive, Robert is getting married, and Aaron is quietly dying.

Summary
“Miss Flaherty, I’m calling from HMP Hotten regarding an inmate, Robert Sugden. I’ve got your number down as his emergency contact,” the man says, except that can’t be right. Robert’s not in Hotten, he’s off on the Isle of Wight, and anyway, why would Liv be down and not Vic or Diane or Aaron—
The man’s still talking, and Liv realises she’s frozen in the middle of the hall, missed whatever he’s been saying, tunes in just in time to hear, “…hospitalised. We can inform you of how the procedure goes.”
“Sorry,” she says, her voice catching, “sorry, can you…can you repeat that? What’s wrong with Robert? What hospital?”
The man sighs, like he doesn’t get paid enough to deal with this. Liv refrains from calling him a twat and listens.
[Or: It's 2022 and Liv's at Uni and happier than she thought she'd get to be. Apparently she's also Robert's emergency contact. It changes things.]

Summary
“I... I came to find you. Vic didn't know where you were, no one knew where you were, and neither you nor Kev showed up for the renewal. I told Vic you might still be here and that I'll come check on you, but… What happened? Who did this to you?”
The last part doesn't really sound like a question, it's said as if Aaron knows the answer already, and he probably does.
Robert squeezes his eyes shut. “Told ‘im I couldn't go through with it.”
“Kev?” There's a dangerous edge creeping into Aaron's voice. “Kev did this to you?”

Summary
“Well, if I’m being honest, I find it kind of boring,” Mel says stiffly, eyes focused on the melting ice of her drink as she fiddles with the cherry stem.
The whole table goes quiet.
“What do you mean you find sex boring,” Santos asks, looking absolutely gobsmacked.
