Edward’s fingers fall away, and Stede’s neck feels cold without them, his lifeline gone. The doctor. Yes, of course. He forgot for a second that you feel good to me was not, in fact, his prognosis.

Summary
The leather used to be like armour. Protection against a world out to fucking get him when his own skin felt far too softly vulnerable to leave so delicate and exposed. He relished in everything it stood for back then. Found euphoria in the hyper-masculine status it brought him, and the power that came with it. Willingly let it consume him until it became his whole world, because the one beyond the doors of the bars was never any better.
He built himself a reputation. Blackbeard, the leather daddy Dom.
As Blackbeard, the world could never harm him. As Blackbeard, his own dysphoria could never touch him. As Blackbeard, he knew he was safe.
It’s still true, all these years later, but his leathers are worn with age just like the rest of him, and Ed is so tired of playing pretend.

Sick sailors and passengers were ordered to go below deck, which was believed to be the most stable part of the ship, as well as a shelter from the weather. This was to ensure a speedy recovery from whatever was ailing them.”

“Fuckin’ wild. And what the hell is this thing?”
“Ahh! This little fellow is a sea cucumber!”
“This is a vegetable?” Ed asks incredulously.
“No,” Stede chuckles. “No, it’s just called that because of the shape. It’s an animal, it swims by expelling water for propulsion!”
“Looks more like a cock than a cucumber. Lotta sea creatures shaped like cocks, actually.”
That startles a squeaky laugh from Stede. “You’re not wrong, my friend.”
If Stede is honest with himself, most of his pleasure in this activity comes from observing Ed. Unlike the jungle, the tidepools have him enchanted and in his element. It’s enough of the sea to keep him comfortable, foreign enough to invoke wonder and bewilderment. Ed hops from pool to pool, graceful even on the most jagged of rocks. He’s laughing and pointing, hair whipping all around him in the wind and, well. It’s a lovely sight from several angles.

Summary
The boots land heavy on the floor in Stede’s peripheral vision.
They’re in awful shape, really quite embarrassing. Watermarks leave unsightly stains on the uppers and they’re scuffed up all over, and the silver hardware is so tarnished it’s almost as black as the leather. The right boot has a quarter-inch gouge so deep that Stede can’t begin to imagine how it got there, with only a half-hearted attempt made to treat it by rubbing in a little polish.
Such poorly-maintained leather in a place like Blackbeard’s is a rare thing; it’s almost a novelty, how frankly shitty they look.

Or: Stede Bonnet, the world’s bitchiest bootblack, is absolutely not going to waste his time on Ed's shitty boots or his shitty attitude, thank you very much. Nope. Definitely not.
