Because that’s really all he can say; that’s really all he can feel. The guilt eating him up from the inside, swallowing him whole. How can he possibly tell her how sorry he is? Even if he got down on his knees and prayed for her forgiveness, it would never be enough.
“Mike?” Abby repeats shakily, voice inching higher and stature shrinking in the face of his palpable regret.
He forces the words out of his throat. “Vanessa’s gone.”
