Max’s head whips to find Steve leaning against the doorway, hands deep in the pockets of his khakis and his ankles crossed casually, like he hangs out in this funeral home all the time.
“Oh.” She clears her throat. “Hey. Asshole.”
“If you’re trying to hide, you might want to shut the door,” he says, stepping inside and lightly pushing the door until it clicks shut. The room feels so much smaller.
“I didn’t want to freak anyone out.”

"'Are you sure we have enough time?' Dustin asks, his voice urgent, not unlike how he sounded back when he convinced Steve to help him track down his demo-dog. Not that Steve blames him.
School dances are harder to navigate than just about anything, including the Upside Down."

Lucas hasn’t cried since that night.
He’s not even sure if he cried that night. It’s just a terrified haze when he looks back on it now. All he remembers is the way the blood rolled down Max’s cheeks like tears. Sometimes it’s all he can see when he looks at her.
There’s no room for him to cry. Not with the weekly crawls. Not with the daily necessity to keep Dustin from getting himself killed. Not with Max lying lifeless in a hospital bed.

Maybe it was due to her exhaustion adjusting to the madness of Mayfair. Maybe it was from the frustration of being unheard and ignored by her mother and sister. Maybe it was the shame from Lord Bridgerton’s plotting. Truthfully, it was likely everything.
Tears sprang on the edges of her eyes and one trickled down her cheek.
She nearly gasped and opened her eyes in horror only to be faced with Lord Bridgerton’s own horror-stricken expression. He looked at her in shock and incredible remorse.

Kate shows some vulnerability and Anthony feels like the ass that he is (at least, as he is at the beginning of their story), and he must contend with the question - what does it really mean to be honorable?
