Jace snickered. Jane tilted her head in confusion, but another glare from Harvey shut him up.
“No disrespect. I just know I wouldn’t let my girl wander around out here by herself,” he said, arms crossed over his barrel chest. He smiled then, a small private look that felt like it was just for her. “Not with the likes of us about.”
She laughed again.
“That’s sweet,” Jane says. “But I can handle myself.”
His next smile was not for her. It was colder, wry and mean like he was making fun of her. It was gone just as quickly as it came, but Jane couldn’t forget the sight of it or the chill it shot down her spine.
“I’m sure you can,” Harvey agreed with a gracious nod. “But I could handle you much better.”
