Summary
Jack Abbot is not a man who speaks about himself often. He’s an observer of others. An archivist detailing the mannerisms of the people around him like it’s his own personal library.
It’s what makes him good at what he does.
He sees. He assesses. He treats.
It’s something he does efficiently and does it damn well. Otherwise he wouldn’t still be doing this same exact thing for twenty something years.
The Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center wasn’t his first time around the brutalness of saving a life at any cost, but he’s starting to come to the terms that it will be his last.
Or: what if Jack Abbot had a degenerative disease and what if Robby was the one to figure it out?

Summary
In Jack’s head, the line between them gets blurry sometimes, the distinctions between his and Robby’s experiences getting tangled together. Robby lost his arm in Iraq, just below the elbow, and Jack lost his leg in a motorcycle accident, all the way up to the pelvis. No, Jack lost the arm. No, he left his leg in Iraq. Robby left his arm on the interstate, somewhere in southern Ohio.

Summary
It takes a moment for the three of them to settle, particularly after Jack's less than graceful addition, but they've got increasing amounts of practice moving around each other. It's never exactly effortless, certainly not with three grown men on a couch not quite big enough to accommodate them all, but it's getting there.

Summary
Around six in the morning, Ellis expertly places a chest tube in a thirty-seven-year-old stabbing victim, and when Jack leans over to inspect it, he is staring straight into the jagged, bloody hole in Private Milton's ribcage. The lights in T2 flicker and Jack can hear the whip of heavy canvas walls as a brutal storm rips across the desert. Milton is the one Jack had no chance of putting back together but he still tried. Fifty-five minutes of rapid infusion and internal cardiac massage and then he had called it, Milton's flat, empty heart in his hand.
Jack doesn't flinch while looking into the abyss of flesh and bone but he does lie to Ellis. "Looks good. Monitor the output, grab me after CT or if he goes south."

Summary
Dennis had left work early; his absence on the walk home feels a little bit like missing a limb. Perhaps if Jack had been working tonight, if he had gotten to see him before leaving, he wouldn’t be fighting so hard to stave off the dread steadily filling his lungs.
Grief looms like a predator ready to strike, a scorpion ready to sting, and it has his hands trembling, his eyes glassy.
or
Robby has gotten so used to bottling up his feelings, to shoving them as deep into his mind as they'll go. But what happens when he can no longer bear it?

Summary
“Can I —” Buck stops, swallows once. “Can I be good for Daddy for a while? Please?”
There’s silence for a few seconds, just long enough for Buck to start worrying that this was one more in the list of things he’s managed to do wrong today, and then Tommy squeezes his hand again. “Can you tell me why? I’m not saying no, honey, but if I know what you want to get out of it, I can give it to you better.”
Okay. That’s fair, and entirely reasonable, and there’s no reason for Buck to feel upset. Tommy even said he wasn’t saying no. God this is so fucking stupid. “I just want … I want to not feel like every choice I make is the wrong one. To — to feel like I’m doing something right.”
“Okay, sweetheart,” says Tommy, and squeezes his hand one more time. “How do you feel about warming Daddy’s cock with your mouth for a while?”

Since losing his virginity shortly after his sixteenth birthday and discovering that he had worth, even if just for as long as it took to make someone come, Buck had explored sex in every way possible.
Or so he’d thought.
But that was before Tommy.

Summary
“You okay, Christopher?” Buck asks when Christopher hasn’t said a single word since getting out of the car.
“Yeah,” Christopher says, not taking his eyes off the view. “I just feel so…small.”
Buck and Eddie exchange a quick glance.
“In a good way or a bad way?” Eddie asks.
“Good, I think,” Christopher whispers, reaching for both of their hands.
“It’s a little overwhelming, isn’t it?” Buck asks, and both Christopher and Eddie nod.
Eddie kneels down on one knee and wraps both of his arms around his son, squeezing him tightly. He’s so much taller than Eddie when he does this now, almost a full head, and still growing like a weed.
“I love you so much,” he murmurs, “and I’m so glad we’re here together.”
“Me too,” Christopher says, tugging on Buck’s hand that he’s still holding onto, the other arm wrapped around Eddie’s neck. “All three of us.”
Eddie looks up at Buck, who’s watching them with so much warmth in his eyes it takes Eddie’s breath away a little.
“Yeah,” he manages to get out, still looking at Buck, who’s smiling now.~
on a road trip with christopher, buck and eddie finally work through their various traumas, and eddie faces his parents again.

Summary
Buck almost doesn’t wake up in time to answer the call. He swims back to consciousness still exhausted and emotionally drained.
Buck scrambles out of Tommy’s arms and to the bedside table, almost falling out of bed in the process. Whatever reason Eddie’s calling him can’t be good—it’s still dark out. A million things race through his mind—Chris, Bobby, Eddie, someone’s hurt, someone’s dying, someone’s—
Eddie’s ragged breath when Buck answers the phone confirms the rabid paranoia gnawing at his gut. Behind him, Tommy stirs. “Eddie? E—Eddie, what’s—what’s wrong?” Buck stammers, already hurriedly throwing on jeans (his) and a t-shirt (Tommy’s, probably, the fit is a little weird).
“Evan,” Eddie and Tommy say at the same time. Eddie says it like a sigh, like a comfort. Tommy just sounds worried.
“Eddie,” Buck repeats, “Eddie, tell—tell me what’s wrong.”

Summary
Evan has never looked more radiant than he does when that medal is draped around his neck. Tommy often looks at Evan’s smiling face and thinks he looks like sunshine; feels something bright and life-affirming warm him from the inside out at the sight of him. Tommy would fly into a thousand hurricanes if it made Evan smile like that again.
But the medal around Tommy’s own neck feels heavy and wrong. He’s being awarded a medal for bravery. Bravery. Tommy Kinard is being given a medal for being brave. At the 118 firehouse, in the same room as Captain Gerrard. It’s all a little too ironic for his taste.

Summary
Eddie still looked wrecked, but his eyes were a little clearer. He slumped against the doorframe, hands shoved into the front pocket of his baggy sweatshirt. When he spoke, his voice was hoarse. “You…you don’t have to do that.”
“Well, I’m not sure my back can take the air mattress forever,” Buck said.
“No, I mean…” Eddie rubbed his eyes with a sweatshirt-covered hand. “You shouldn’t have to…to clean it up. It’s my mess.”
“Then it's my mess, too,” Buck said, shrugging one shoulder.
Eddie’s expression crumpled and he covered his face with his hands, shoulders curling inwards.
