So seducing Chancellor Ake didn't go as planned. That's fine, no plan survives combat unchanged.
And then she seduces him, and things really don't go as planned. Kelrec is half-convinced that all of this is a grand joke on Ake's part. Strike that, after the so-called "dress rehearsal" with the flatulent Kometa fish he is 100% convinced that it's a joke on her part.
But when Alpherati arrive Kelrec realizes that diplomacy is, indeed, just that strange.

“Ohhh, so you were like – “ she pulls her jacket out in front of her, “ – knocked up?”
The first thing Joel is teaching her when they get back to Jackson is tact.
“Not my preferred use of term, but yes.”

Ellie looks down at her crossword, dejected, as she adjusts her new green glasses. “At this rate, I’ll die before I finish this.” She tugs on his sleeve. “What’s number twenty-seven?”
Joel sighs. “I dunno.”
“I don’t believe you,” Ellie scoffs, the words almost a whine. “C’mon, seriously, me and Dina are trying to see who can finish ours first and if I don’t beat her I have to clean out Japan’s stable for two weeks and -”
“Well, hold on now,” Joel says, reaching into another one of his jacket pockets. “Let me get my glasses…”
Ellie lets out a delighted laugh when Joel slips on a pair of identical round, green glasses. How he got two of the same pair, she’ll never know. But she does know it makes her smile so wide her cheeks might split open.
