Dazai always found fairy tales to be silly. He scoffs whenever he comes across storybooks and sees all these ‘creatures’ depicted in the most comical of ways—with big eyes and kind words and bright smiles as they go about having adventures with their human friend. There’s some morals thrown in, along with all the singing. God, there’s always so much singing. These stories? Always, always had a happy ending.
Bullshit. All of them.
Those ‘creatures’—they’re not kind. They don’t sing. They don’t have bright red hair and glistening blue tails, and they certainly don’t cradle you close while they save you from drowning.
You know what they do? They scream in your mind while destroying your ship through the sheer force of their tail and deadly sharp fins. They snarl in your face exposing the most terrifying teeth and their fury manifests as angry red swirls mapping their body. Your survival? Depends purely on a whim.
Dazai should know. He’s met the merfolk before, after all.

The accuracy of the question had Luffy’s frown lift in surprise. He blinked. “Yeah…”
Rubbing his chin, lips pursed in thought, his eyes slid from Luffy to Law. “But you haven’t kissed yet?”
It was hard to tell who exclaimed the loudest.

Sanji attempted to scoff, but his discomfort over how utterly thrilled Zoro looked right now made it come out more like a pouty huff. “What the fuck do you think, mosshead?” he asked. “It’s cilantro. It tastes like soap. Or can you not tell that because the algae in your brain has spread to your taste buds?”
In which Sanji is mildly devastated to learn he can’t properly taste cilantro, and Zoro proves surprisingly helpful in the kitchen.
