Summary
It is Robby’s first day back. Everything unfolds with an almost uncomfortable sense of normality, as though the hospital itself were holding its breath. That is, until the emergency doors burst open.
A boy everyone knows is brought in—pale, unconscious, a gunshot wound to the abdomen. The atmosphere shifts instantly. Voices overlap, monitors begin to sound, and the pressure settles like a physical weight on everyone in the room.
His best resident freezes. He knows what to do, but he cannot do it. Not this time. Because this is not just any patient.
It is Langdon’s son.
No one says it aloud, yet everyone feels it: they are not only trying to save a life, they are trying to prevent the entire hospital from breaking apart if they fail.

Es el primer día de regreso de Robby. Todo transcurre con una normalidad casi incómoda, como si el hospital contuviera el aliento. Hasta que las puertas de urgencias se abren de golpe.

Leslie sits them both down in her office immediately after they arrive. “I’m not going to mince words,” she says as soon as they’re settled. “Jason, your blood test results came back. I’m sorry. You’re HIV-positive.”
Time stops moving.
Leslie, ever the professional, plows right on before the bombshell has had time to settle. Jason doesn’t need her to explain what HIV is to him. He’s well aware. He’s watched and read depictions of the illness before, in novels and musicals, most of them tragedies because sickness always ends in tragedy. Like terminal cancer, or an oncoming train while you’re stuck in the middle of the tracks. No escape. No happy endings.

Of course you’re already making this about yourself, the poisonous voice in his head sneers, and Bruce chokes back a sob, tears welling in his eyes.
“No, that isn’t-” Bruce starts, stops himself.
Think. Focus.
I’m not important. What I thought is Not. Important. We’re here now. Focus. Save your fucking son.
“Jay, please, just tell me how to get it off. Please,” he begs as unshed tears start to blur his vision.
Please, please. Please let me fix this.
When Jason doesn’t respond, Bruce breaks and the tears finally fall.
I can’t do this again. I can’t lose him again. Not like this. Not ever. Please, please.
