Though Shane’s returned his attention to the highway, he can feel Ilya’s confused stare. “I was in Hollander house, drinking David’s nice vodka and eating Yuna’s good pasta. She is much better cook than you, surely you know this. But yes, I was there, they know I am your boyfriend.”
“Ilya, no, well, I mean yes, but–”
“I am supposed to be one bad with English,” mutters Ilya.
“Are my parents the first people to know you aren’t straight?”

Five more minutes, Ilya told himself, fighting the slow, sleepy blinks and the dangerous urge that wanted nothing more than to pull the duvet over the two of them. Five more minutes and then I will go. Hollander is asleep, he can’t bitch about any risks.
Ilya woke up fifteen minutes later, warm and content. He ignored the feeling as he slid out the bed, his chest tightening at the way Shane grabbed the pillow he was sleeping on and tugged it closer. He quickly got dressed, letting his eyes linger on Shane for a few more seconds before quickly slipping out the room.

Summary
It’s how Kiara knows, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that happy endings are not to be trusted. The gold of the Royal Merchant or El Dorado was never going to solve all their problems. Life as a Kook is not inherently better than life as a Pogue, no matter how many people tried to tell her it was. Makeovers and role reversals are not the end of the story; they’re an ominous beginning.
That’s why when JJ tells her what he’s learned, when the broken confession tears from his throat, she knows exactly what he’s wrestling with. Knows he held his head higher before it was threatened with a Kook crown.
Anyone else would cheer for this kind of fairy tale plot twist. They’d celebrate fortunes restored, a pauper turned prince, a royal long thought dead returning to glory. But something haunts the Genrette house, be it an actual curse or just centuries of greed and corruption. And JJ’s always preferred the devil he knows.

Or, Kiara's never liked fairy tales. While JJ wrestles with an identity crisis, Kiara tries to show him there's nobody better equipped to weather the storm with him.

The boy whose gaze she had met in the crowd like their eyes were magnets seeking each other out. Quietest onstage, but used his instrument like he was born with it. He doesn’t go for a towel or a journalist: instead, one of the roadies come up to him, takes his bass, then tapes up his thumb with gaffa tape and cotton wool. There’s a line of dried blood that runs down the inside of his palm, and he sucks it into his mouth, pink mouth becoming even pinker. His hair, dusty blond, dark gold with perspiration, sticks to his forehead.
Kie thinks, oh.
or, Kiara is a music journalist waiting for her big break, and JJ is the bassist in a band that might just be the answer.

Summary
It’s scaring her, how JJ seems to think the only way he can help the Pogues is being the sacrificial bait. It’s always been part of his DNA but lately, it’s like he’s physically unable to stop. And Kiara doesn’t understand it because she would do anything to keep him safe.
She kept him from drowning, fought to keep him above the surface whether it was the unknown depths of the Atlantic or the equally troubling waters of his own mind. It was all the same to her - the risk, the reward. She cares enough to keep him safe, to yell at him about the stupid chances he takes. She loves him enough to pull him away from the edge.
JJ, though? He’s bold, reckless. He’d set himself on fire to keep the Pogues warm, to keep any of them from even wondering what it was like to be cold. And she’s terrified for the day he burns too bright, when his wax-coated wings fly too close to the sun.

So why would she rather bake in the sun helping JJ with his busted bike engine?
