When he’s in the pit, though, the darkness swallows him whole. He scrambles around blindly but all he can feel are the walls that he can’t climb. It’s as true now as it was ten years ago: when he’s living through the worst of it, it’s nearly impossible for him to understand that as things get worse, so too will they get better.
But just like ten years ago, always, in that darkness, there’s Phil.

Dan considers buying a single bed a week after it happens. Waking up every morning and being immediately confronted with the empty space beside him is too much. But his bed will still be otherwise unaccompanied even if it’s smaller. So, it stays.
But Dan doesn’t want to. Within two months, he considers just… leaving. A bed, a house, a hometown, a home country without Rowan is too much.
A spontaneous flight to New Zealand. It’s far from London, absolutely gorgeous, quite cheap because of conversion rates, and the people speak primarily English. Perfect.
The spontaneous Airbnb is close to town, a little cottage wrapped in wisteria. Perfect for a brain bound with hysteria.
