In order to bring Gustave back as himself, whole, Maelle had to infuse him with Pure Chroma, something wielded only by Painters.
This Pure Chroma responds to intent, just like it does for Painters.
As life begins again - Gustave does not hesitate to support all of his friends and family - but now that support comes with a cost that he might no longer afford to be able to pay.

Summary
Modern AU - by Gustave’s definition, he is most certainly not a virgin, (frottage to the point of mutual completion back in his high school days) but that definition just isn’t doing it anymore at 32, so he goes to a bar for a hookup just to get rid of all of his fucking nerves about the whole thing, not even expecting it to be a good time.
Cue in Verso, who just goes home with Gustave expecting a quick one night stand - only to once he finds out about how Gustave’s never had real sex before, to show him just how good it can be, over multiple hookups, slowly but surely falling completely for him and stopping his fuck-boi tendencies

Gustave let go of a heavy sigh and nodded his head. Back in the Stone Wave Cliffs, he had come to peace that this was where his journey ended—For those who come after, right?—but it seemed like his story wasn't done just yet. Maelle had, somehow, given him another lease on life, and this time, he could live it. He could grow old. He could do things simply for the sake of doing them; every waking moment didn't have to be dedicated to trying to solve the issue with the Paintress, with preserving their civilization.

"You want me to come with you," he says finally, looking at Verso as though he has entirely lost his mind.

Time is running out. With war looming over Belle Epoque Paris, Verso must make a choice between his duty to his family and the young Writer who has unknowingly stolen his heart.

“Hey,” Verso tilts his head chidingly. “I may not be the creator of this world, but I’m more or less sure that you’re not supposed to be sad here. We even found a list of rules, look,” he waves a crumpled piece of paper. Reads, “‘Feeling whooo allowed only in designated areas. Inside the house whooo is prohibited’! See?”
“I’m not inside the house,” Gustave objects, just to be an ass — he can feel a smile forming on his lips. “And I’m not ‘whooo’. More like, ‘hmmm’.”
“‘Hmmm’. Is that the official term?”
“Yup,” Gustave lowers his head, examining the wrist connections of the prosthesis.
Or: Gustave finds out that “Barbapapa” is not really compatible with intricate mechanisms. Luckily, Verso is there to help.

Born out of crack cooked up with my good friend Sinvulkt, I initially intended simply to contribute to the acquisition of a canonical tag: Winged Painted Verso Dessendre. What ensued is entirely their fault. Please accept this gift and my unending blame/gratitude Sin.
What was meant to be a short one-shot soon took over my entire brain, nay, my soul. Batnoco has consumed me. His smooth wings and upside-down sleeping habits are enchanting. He is beauty, he is grace.

It comes out almost pleadingly, the desperation Gustave tried to suppress for months now bleeding into his voice.
Something softens in Verso’s expression.
Or: the Maelle ending. Coming to terms with being brought back and repainted. Gustave is looking for some answers, so he goes to the one person who can provide them. Verso is absolutely done with this life, but feels obligated to at least talk to him.
They find that being a copy of a dead man is less unbearable when you're not alone.

The girl’s shoulders hunch again. An expression is battling on her face. Guilt again, and fear, and shame. And then faintly, in the soft turn of her cheek, commiseration. She watches Gustave for a long, sad moment, and then turns to a new page in the notepad. She starts writing something, and then stops, glancing furtively at Gustave before scribbling it out. On a new line she instead writes in big bold letters:
Maelle.
OR
Gustave is the local mechanic of Lumiere, an idyllic coastal village far away from the chaos and conflict of Paris. Struggling with his recent injury and the loss of a good friend, he's not quite prepared when a family moves into the abandoned Manor on the edge of town.
He's definitely not prepared for their children.

“What, no speech?” Gustave questions a smirk on his face, standing near the steps leading down into the pier.
“Oh this is far from the death march of the past expeditions," Comes Emma's reply. "Besides, they’ll only be gone a few months, with no Paintress looming over them.”
Gustave sobers suddenly at the thought, looking forward to watch as the team in front of him loads the last of the supplies Emma was able to drag out of the council into funding, onto their ship. His eyes find Verso amongst them, a smile on his face as speaks to a fellow crew member.
He was going to miss that man.
With all of the Painter's out of the canvas, a city left to restore, and a continent to explore, a new type of Expedition is needed. One to gather resources, map and document, research and development. Verso chooses to join, to escape, Gustave chooses to remain trapped in his own responsibilities.

Summary
He plays all the sharp, loud notes, he plays and plays until it bleeds, until it reverberates in his skull in a relentless cacophony. Until it echoes in the hall, up to the glass ceiling.
A sharp movement in the audience catches his eye, beyond the halo of the stage light.
At first he thinks it’s Maelle, that she’s spotted him doing something that she doesn’t like, doesn’t fit the perfect image of it in her head, but…
It’s not Maelle.
No, it’s Gustave.
Gustave knows something's wrong with Lumiére. With himself. With Maelle. And he knows he'll find answers with the mysterious pianist. And Verso sees.
