    Summary

He came to you in your dreams, pulling the darkness like a shroud behind him.

The Executioner, the same as in the painting, yet utterly different. Real.

Before him you trembled, but his wrath was not directed to you. His was the righteous weapon of God’s will, and he held it pointed outward.

His fingertips sink into your skin, and he makes another noise that sounds to you almost like despair. Somehow you know it's because he can't get his face close to you.

Gorgeous and melancholic. Reads like what should have happened in the movie

    -------

When she’s ready, she reaches between them, wrapping her hand gently around him.

“Slowly,” she murmurs. “You won’t hurt me if you go slow.”

She helps him find the right angle, her free hand steadying his hip. He enters her with painstaking care, inch by inch. His eyes never leave hers. She arches slightly, jaw slack with a soft cry, which startles him slightly.

“You’re all right,” she reassures him.

He moves like she shows him. Gently at first, then deeper, learning the rhythm of her breath and the way her fingers tighten when she wants more.

When he pulls back too far, she whimpers and guides him forward again, whispering: “Don’t stop.”

He listens. He watches. He feels everything from her soft tremors to the way her body opens for him and holds him like he belongs. [....]

“You feel like life,” she whispers. He kisses her shoulder, her mouth, her closed eyelids. He keeps moving with her, even as her hands begin to slip. Even as her body goes still.

Her last breath is against his cheek, but he doesn’t stop. He stays buried in her, motion slowing to a tremble, his forehead pressed to hers. When the silence around them settles fully, his body follows—a shudder, a soundless cry—as he spills into the cold cradle of her body.

He stays there, holding her wound with one hand and her face with the other, whispering her name until the sun rises. And when he lets her go, he does so gently.

    Summary

The next night, Three finally abandoned its anxious patrol circuit and instead started stalking me through the halls. It moved quietly as a predator and kept out of my view. I knocked its camera inputs away. It scrambled to do the same to me and after a few feeble attempts, I conceded for the sake of the game. The look of shocked glee on Three’s face when I came up behind it was worth it.

After that, we played lots of small impromptu jumping and stalking games. ART kept a tally of who won each round, which I thought was against the spirit of the games, but it seemed to help with Three’s ever-present loneliness. I owed it that much. (It had saved my life, after all.)

    Bookmarker's Notes

Three leaned forward and pushed its face into the nook of SecUnit’s neck. It was a quick and happy display of affection, but intimate nonetheless. When SecUnit closed its eyes and bristled, I pressed pointedly on its feed. It frowned like it was pouting and quickly tilted its head sideways to press its cheek to the side of Three’s head. It recoiled quickly but deliberately tapped me in the feed.

What a defiant little thing. I would prove my point.

[Unrequited Three/MB, ART manipulating things behind the scenes. Painfully raw and visceral. Just a complete gut punch (tw: manipulation, ART tricks Three into raping MB, non-con, guilt, self-loathing, hurt no comfort)]

    Bookmarker's Notes
Haunting and elegiac. A gorgeously sad portrait

    -----

It's not till six months later that the last postcard arrives. High summer now, and the air outside her flat smells of hot stone and dust, and Nina takes her weekend afternoons slowly, working in the cool mornings and evenings. When night falls she ventures down to street level to find her mailbox full: a stiff envelope packed with photographs from Lotte and Karl's vacation, a bill for her scooter repair, a letter from Tenma, hesitant and slow, out of the habit of writing letters. And a last postcard, more battered than the others, as if the postman had dropped it in several puddles on the way, or perhaps it suffered that damage before it ever reached a postbox. The postmark's too smudged to read, and whatever identifying traces were on the front of the card have been reduced to scratches and blots of green ink. No drawing, Nina thinks, tracing her fingers over it; maybe the remnants of a photograph, or a commercial postcard, even. But time and travel have worn away what once was written there.

On the back of the card is a drawing: a harbor, lined with fishing boats, piers stretching out into the water. There's a hint of color in the sky, sunrise or sunset, and a haze of buildings on the far side of the bay.

At the very edge, traced so lightly that it's almost invisible, is the figure of a man sitting on the edge of a pier. It's awkwardly drawn by an artist unused to depicting people, but there's a sense that he's looking out over his shoulder, away from her, towards the water.

Below the drawing are two lines of text, and Nina's eyes prickle as she reads them. "I'm glad you're home," she whispers.

Once upon time there lived a brother and a sister.

And if they are not dead, why then, they are living still.
