Dad, Ronan tries to say. But, of course, there’s no noise in the slumber of the leylines, and even as the Forest springs with life like a fresh West Virginian summer, there’s no one to hear Ronan. He doesn’t exist yet.
If it has existed once, it exists always, even if you don’t remember. Even if no one does.
A ferocious scream lurches out of Ronan’s throat, commanding the Forest to call louder, and louder, unable to be ignored; terror shakes with terribleness. To the Forest, Ronan crucifies it with the word: Greywaren!
Trembling, the Forest responds: Greywaren! Greywaren! More, more!
