The inside of the tent was hazy with heat, air thick with sweat and breath and the subtle scent of sex still clinging to the crumpled sleeping bag. The wind outside howled on, a low whisper against the insulated nylon walls, but it sounded far away now—tamed by the shelter they’d made for each other.
Phainon was boneless in Mydei’s arms, legs tangled together, with his head tucked beneath Mydei’s chin. His body hummed with the slow, pleasant throb of being thoroughly ruined, and his voice was down to a murmur.
“Don’t let me die of contentment,” he whispered.
“You’re not dying,” Mydei said, brushing damp curls away from his forehead.
“I might be,” Phainon argued faintly. “I think my bones melted. You melted me.”

And his scent – bloodline’s mercy, it fully revealed itself to Mydeimos the moment he found its owner, which turned out to be the most tantalizing he had ever smelled. Morning warmth and ripe barley got enriched by the sweet-sourness of summer drink, promising ecstasy in just one drop.

Phainon lets out a sigh, watching as the Chimera nestled in Mydei’s arms emits a soft purring sound, utterly content. The others have settled back into place—one draped across Mydei’s lap, two curled by each of his thighs, and the blue one still slung over his bare shoulder like a living, breathing scarf.
Then, unexpectedly, Phainon murmurs, almost to himself, “I want that too.”
Mydei looks up. “You want to hold a Chimera?”
But Phainon just gives him that look—the one he’s perfected ever since discovering Mydei’s soft spot for it.
The sad puppy look.
Suspicious, Mydei narrows his eyes. “You want to hold a Chimera... right?”

Mydei turned around, intending to survey how many Titankin were left and to taunt Phainon with his kill count.
Instead, his breath left him and a frigid cold rocketed through his veins.
Phainon stood next to a ruined wall, corpses of Titankin littering the ground around him. His greatsword was buried in the chest of a dying Titankin before him. But despite a second foe rapidly approaching him, Phainon had not yet removed his sword from the corpse. Sweat beaded at his brow, and even at a distance Mydei could tell that his breathing was labored. His hands left the hilt of his sword, and Phainon stared down at them. A mix of confusion and fatigue spread across his face. He stumbled, knees unsteady.
The Titankin behind Phainon raised its weapon.
Mydei had seen this once before. A great warrior brought to heel by some strange, unexplainable force, a fugue state descending upon them.
His mother.
Phainon is poisoned while fighting Titankin, and Mydei relives his worst nightmare. Injuries need tending, and confessions of the past and present are made.

The door suddenly clicks.
Lu Guang freezes.
A moment later, the door bursts open.
“Morning! I bring—” Qiao Ling’s voice cuts through the quiet. She stops mid-sentence, halfway in, eyes locking instantly with his.
The front door faces him directly.
Lu Guang doesn’t move. For one second, he stands there under the soft light, pale skin visible between the hem of the jacket and his thighs, hair falling into his eyes. His hand still holds the half-empty glass. His mind blanks out so completely that even his breath forgets to come.

It really was quite beautiful, and should be seen by everyone.
Sunday doesn’t yet realize how much he’d come to appreciate that decision, despite the headaches that were to come.
