Jack Carter used to have a job where he actually made a difference. He saved lives. It didn't always come off, but he was good at it. Now he was Mayberry in a town of scientists who thought what they wanted trumped the safety and well-being of others. Jack wonders whether it was worth it.
A chemist comes to town, nothing new in that, but this man has a hidden past, and nothing is going to be quite the same in the future.
A blast from Jack's past turns up, Raylan Givens, and Raylan's unlike any Marshal Eurekans might have previously encountered. The fact that he's Jack's ex-boyfriend and Jack's burgoning relationship with Nathan Stark not withstanding, Jack is just a little grateful to mix it up a bit. Raylan is not alone, he's brought fellow Marshal and laconic ex Ranger Sniper (his current boyfriend), Tim Gutterson with him.
Allison, Henry and even Nathan are somewhat dismissive of Jack's concerns, but then the Dixie Mafia, led by Wynn Duffy, show up. The Dixie Mafia are missing their drugs, and their money, and they don't care who gets in the way.
With Nathan's life on the line, Jack, Jo, Raylan and Tim need to hold until relieved. Maybe science can help for a change.

But the fact that those in charge, namely Dr Allison Blake and Dr Nathan Stark, never saw there was a risk that plain old-fashioned homicidal rage could rear it's ugly head and throw rationality out of the window, well that was something that Jack really didn't understand.
When one of Eureka's scientists pulls a gun and shoots Nathan. Jack finds himself in the epicentre of a unique crisis. Amid the need to find the perpetrator, Jack has to deal with Allison and Nathan's fallout from the shooting. It changes a lot of things between all of them.

Jack Carter has a problem. It's tall, it's dark, it's handsome, a genius Nobel-prize winning scientist and it, or rather he, has been a pain in Jack's butt since the day they met.
Jack's been in major denial for three months, but a random act of crackpot scientist imagining he could get away with unauthorised testing if only the Sheriff and the Head of GD were out of the way for a while brings things to a head in a very life or death way.
The worst part, this unintentional act of harm may well end up killing the man that Jack can now admit he loves, with Nathan's life hanging in the balance the only thing Jack can do is pray that they are found in time.
