That, on top of his dry and cryptic messages from the day before; vaguely mentioning an argument with his dad who was in town for some reason.His knuckles wrapped on the glass and Jonathan’s dark figure shifted, turning to face him. “Byers, let me in,” he hissed, rubbing his hands together in an effort to warm them.

It was more complicated than that. Much more. Will fought for the right words. “I learned to be okay with what I have. You’re my best friend, Mike. That’s all I need,” he said sincerely, smiling at him. Yes, his heart ached a bit when he looked too hard at his best friend. But their friendship was enough for him. It had to be. To have Mike at all was better than to not.

“Thank you for all this. You’ve made… the past two weeks a lot easier,” he admitted softly, looking down at his arm and flexing his fingers. If anything, the injury had brought them closer. Keith hoped it would stay that way.“Of course, Samuri,” he murmured. “Me and you against the universe.”
A soft lull came over the room, mostly because Keith could tell Lance was getting tired. He was too, to be honest. Learning to sleep in unconventional places was nothing new to Keith but it was still odd to be in someone else’s bed. To be in Lance’s bed.
“Me and you against the universe,” he whispered, repeating the words as Lance’s eyes closed.

After he’d come down from the shock, and felt his heart rate slow to something more reasonable, more manageable, he was able to take in his surroundings and ground himself. Bring himself back from there, from him, from vines and smoke and spores crawling on his skin, inside his body, down his throat, everywhere — Will wanted a cigarette.

It’s at that very moment that, for reasons completely and utterly unknown to anyone at all, every single possible word he has ever learned from any language ever has suddenly disappeared from his brain, and his throat feels relevant to the Sahara Desert.
None of this, of course, has to do with the fact that Will is very, very, very – shirtless.
Will blinks at him. “Are you okay?”
“Shoulders,” Mike says, sounding vaguely chipmunk-like, and he hears Max barely choke down a snicker.
Will comes back for the summer, and Mike deals with it.

The words hit Mike like a wall. He sucked in a breath too fast, coughing as the smoke caught in his throat. He bent forward, hand over his mouth, sputtering.
“Shit,” he muttered, his voice coming out low and rough as he wiped his mouth with the back of his hand.
He looked up slowly, and the boy standing in front of him was a version of Will that Mike had not yet gotten used to.
Jesus, when did he start smoking? It felt like a lifetime ago. As he thought about it further, a small realization hit him.
He started smoking the night that Will left for California.

Will moves back from California, and when he and Mike end up living together, they realize how much they’ve both changed, and must figure out how to navigate the tension, awkwardness, and unspoken feelings between them.

It’s the kind of truck that belongs in a movie, shining in the early morning sun. There’s also someone leaning against it. Shirtless. That’s what gets the immediate attention of the girls.
Max gasps and nudges El, “Uh… wow.”
Lucas frowns, “Hey!”
“I didn’t say anything!” Max quips back, but she’s still gripping El’s arm as they both give the guy an eyeful.
“I’ll say something,” El buts in, grinning, “That guy is very hot.”
Will, a few steps behind them, mutters, “Here, here.”
Mike groans, “Not you too, Will.”
Will just smiles sheepishly but his voice is easy, “What? I can appreciate a good-looking guy."
OR, in the gap between High School ending and College starting Joyce books the party into a 2 week long farm stay. Mike expects a relaxing break but it quickly turns chaotic when the charming farm-hand takes a liking to Will, and old feelings, new tensions, and unexpected drama threaten to ruin the quiet countryside for everyone...

---“Chicken,” he said finally.
Will blinked. “Chicken?” He frowned, trying to picture it. “Isn’t that the one where you get up on someone’s shoulders and try to knock the other person off?” The image flashed so suddenly and absurdly that a laugh almost escaped him. He caught it halfway, feeling stupid.
Mike shook his head quickly. His pale cheeks flushed, covering his freckles in a faint pink like he was embarrassed, or maybe warm. Will told himself it was probably just the basement lighting. Or the heat.
“No,” Mike said. “Like… the other game.” He rubbed his thumb against the edge of the blanket, not looking at Will now. “The one where you dare each other to do stuff. And you have to keep going until someone backs out.” He swallowed. “Chicken.”
