Summary
"I don't want to pry," Xisuma said when they were speaking before his official invitation to join. "And not answering won't change whether or not you get whitelisted. We admins just prefer to have a heads up if anything's likely to come trying to dig you up, so we can keep you and everyone else safe."
Grian thought back to obsidian and endstone and blood, to tattered wings and torn robes and so so many unseeable eyes, and swallowed hard.
"No," he said, his voice shaky. "No, I don't think anyone will come looking for me."
"Okay," Xisuma answered, and that was that.
Until they invited two new people to the server.
or, the Hermitcraft Backstory Rule says that you don't ask other people about their backstory, you let them tell it if they want to and leave it be if they don't.
Unfortunately for Grian, one of the newest Hermits was also a player on his old server - one he'd thought had been dead for years - and she's going to drag his backstory kicking and screaming into the light whether she means to or not.

Summary
The boy came on one of the rare ships that came to trade with Boatem, like most of their new arrivals. Calling him a "young man" would be generous to the age he appeared to be, Pearl thought as the youth took in the oddities of Boatem with wide eyes and an indecipherable expression.
All in all, he seemed a little strange and a little intriguing and very curious. Just the sort of person they'd expect to come to Boatem, if Pearl was being honest.
"I heard rumors. That you're... strange, here. I'm strange too. And people don't... like strange people, always."
"Ah," Pearl said understandingly as the boy fidgeted, anxiously tugging his knit cap down lower over his ears. "You're looking for a place you can be strange and still fit, huh?"
"Yes," he replied, a weary sort of relief in his voice. "Were they right? Is... Can I do that here?"
or; a Flower Child comes to Boatem, and finds a home.

Summary
"Hell of a battle," the warrior said, stretching his hand out to help Jack to his feet. "Good thing I showed up, yeah?"
"Yeah," Jack answered, not sure if the warrior really had turned the tide that dramatically, or if he was just delusional. He was inclined to lean towards delusional, but there was something in the man's eyes that made Jack feel like a thunderstorm was building. "Glad you're on our side, then."
"Yeah," the warrior agreed with a lightning-crackle smile. "For now, at any rate."
or; Four conversations at the end of a war.

Summary
When he was 16, Grian fell in with a bad crowd.
For a few months, Grian's life stopped making sense, and by the time it was over he had scars, a disability, an arrest record, an expulsion, and enough trauma to fill years of therapy, if he ever went.
He did not go to therapy, incidentally, but at least he was self-aware enough to admit he probably should.
Instead, he dropped out of high school the moment he turned 18, got his GED, and became a shut-in. Going out became something he did only when necessary, and he went to great lengths to ensure it hardly ever would be. He didn't have anxiety, precisely, or agoraphobia or anything like that, he just...
Well he really didn't like the way people would look at him, when they noticed his wings.
or, Grian's best friend wants him to be more social because she's worried about him, so he becomes a streamer. Despite his best efforts, he actually ends up making more friends, and maybe heals a little in the process.

Summary
There was no madness in the eyes looking out from behind lank white hair, close enough he could reach out and brush it behind the witcher's ear.
"Are you bound to defend and serve me?" Julian asked, tilting his head slightly.
"Yes," the wolf growled, low and rumbling and nearly inaudible.
-----
Prince Julian of Kerack, when he came of age and was officially named his father's heir, was gifted four bound and controlled witchers by the king of Kaedwen: the last four wolves of Kaer Morhen. Julian would prefer to accept the gift and set them free, but is forbidden from doing that on pain of their deaths. So instead, all he can do is apologize and treat them decently.
This simple, compassionate act sets off a series of events that will irrevocably change his life, his witchers' lives, and the lives of everyone living in the Northern Kingdoms.
(Technically incomplete in that the current ending was not the planned endpoint, but does not have a cliffhanger and is functionally a complete story. Subscribe to be notified when the hiatus ends.)

Now the man whose identity was built on his singing, wordplay, and verbal charm has to figure out how to exist in the world without those things. Thankfully, navigating that is easier when you have people who love you trying to help you manage it.

Summary
“How do I know?” The kid spits, knife raised again, trembling violently. His eyes are wet, angry and pleading and piercing right down into Grian’s soul.
“...If I can fly?” Grian asks, confused. His heart is beating fast.
The boy shakes his head violently, taking a lurching step forward, now only a few feet away. Something about his eyes almost seems familiar, but the thought is fleeting. The knife looks sharp. The child is crying, slow tears that barely have an effect on his voice.
“No,” the kid says forcefully. “How do I know you’re not a zombie?”
OR,
A young Scar fresh from a world overtaken by zombies stumbles through The Rift onto Hermitcraft, and is quickly adopted by the rest of the Hermits, who have no idea who he actually is.
An older Scar grapples with a past that he'd rather forget, all while trying to avoid the version of himself he left behind a long time ago.- Language:

Summary
“What voices, Scar?” Martyn asks again, a bit closer now, snapping him back to attention.
“You— You know the Secret Keeper voices? When you succeed your task?” Scar asks, the words practically bursting out of him, propelled by the pressure of being kept at bay for so long.
Martyn’s eyes narrow just slightly, his gaze flickering to the Secret Keeper and then back. “Yeah, I’ve heard ‘em. We all have, far as I can tell.”
Scar nods and swallows, pasting on a shaky grin. “I hear them all the time.”

Summary
The Admin sinks to one knee. “What are you doing?” Xelqua demands before he can stop himself, voice cracking.
“Well,” a voice comes from The Admin, and it is… it is not weird, but it is, and Xelqua can not describe how - just that it sends another shiver down his spine. “You don’t exactly look happy, and I’m afraid that may have something to do with me.”
It does. “That doesn’t exactly explain your… Everything.”
“No use in intimidating you, friend.”
